Linear content progression

What if instead of a battlepass/events/shop type of system they have this.

Each core has it’s own “battlepass”
You can only progress one core at a time
You can buy each item/level in the battlepass from the store for 200 credits each, or you can buy each rank for 1500 each, or you can grind your way through the battlepass

The way the progression works is similar to MCC, you have 10 items available to grind in each “rank”. You can choose which one your XP will be unlocking. You can not get new items until you finish your current rank.
Each level costs 4k XP. Which in turn means each rank costs 40k XP

An example (I’ll only worry about armor cosmetics for the example but weapon/vehicle would go into these passes too, as well as other content (backdrops, emblems, poses, ai, ect)

Yorai battlepass
(default cosmetics are unlocked as soon as you unlocked the core but only for that core. To get them on other cores, you must unlock them in the BP)
This is assuming crosscore is enabled in the future of course

Yorai Rank 1

  • Yorai core
  • Okane visor
  • Gatekeeper L. Shoulder
  • Gatekeeper R. Shoulder
  • Jadeiron Plate Chest
  • First Temple Gloves
  • Echo Blue Armor coating
  • Sabi Visor
  • Fog Painting Armor coating
  • Petal Polished knee pads

Yorai Rank 2

  • Hikeshi helmet
  • Blinding Shadow coating
  • Shibuichi visor
  • Sixth Gate L. shoulder
  • Sixth Gate R. shoulder
  • Balaton Fields coating
  • Shadow Raven knee pads
  • Enji-iro visor
  • Bear Temple chest
  • Dust Wind coating

I think you get the idea

Eh, this is an alright idea, but really the game should have an overall progression system. Some items could be unlocked by ranks but the credit system from Reach was perfect, we could focus on whatever we were most interested in.

Yeah but you could simply grind out what you wanted without having to pay. This way, you would have to get through a lot of content to get something that you want (depending on what you want of course)
This makes people want to spend money which gives makes a profit for the devs so they can continue to develop the game.
You have to find the perfect medium

I mean, they had no MTX in any of the original bungie games but had no problems finding funding to make more Halo. The fact that some games have made a lot of money off of MTX shouldn’t force all studios to do it, but sadly the future of Halo is much more determined by what MSFT thinks is trendy and profitable than what artists think would make a good game.

I do like your idea, the core-based progression would make a lot of sense, and each battle pass could introduce a new core to progress on. I just loved the Halo: Reach system because plenty of things still were a grind. Some items couldn’t be unlocked until a later level so you had to go at it for a while to even have access to them, but there was also an awesome aspect of player choice with the credits. Some very expensive items were available early on so you could grind straight towards earning the credits for them, or you could spend credits on smaller items and build up piece meal.

They weren’t constantly pumping extra content into the games either

I think it would be a good system for both devs and players. If each level costs 5k XP to get, that would be 50k per rank. The progression itself would be slower than what we have now but it also never ends

A Reach type system would be great, I just don’t know how they would implement it without it being too easy to grind everything that you want out

If 343 could implement a true rank system that is designed to be grindy but with periodic rewards or milestones to keep the leveling up fresh. It would undoubtedly give Infinite more longevity and keep players playing for longer.

It could also solve the issue of players who have completed the Battle Pass. Now those loyal players who stick around will be able to continue working towards their overall player progression, even though the Events or BP is finished for the time being. They could also toss XP incentives on certain medals and on Victories to give players a nudge to play a little better as well… this may help alleviate the issue where players are jumping into matches solely for challenges.

It all just depends on how 343 does it, if they even implement it at all.

4k XP per level, makes it 40k XP per rank.
6x40’000=240,000 XP
4000x6=24,000
24,000+240,000=264,000 XP

So if you gained 2k XP every round, you would complete this BP in 132 battles. Add in other content and it will be longer.
I think that is a decent progression rate, what about you?

66 levels in total
66x200=13,200 credits.
Of 100 credits=$1, that makes this event cost $132

I think you’re overestimating how much content is in Infinite. For reference, here’s a comparison of what Reach had at launch vs. what Infinite has in the battle pass

Halo Reach ($60 for campaign + MP/forge, co-op etc.):

21 helmets (now 26 in MCC)
18 Chests
18 shoulders
6 wrists

Infinite ($60 for campaign + $10 battlepass +>$1000 of store purchases):
18 helmets
16 chests
11 shoulders
5 wrists

Infinite launched with 10 maps, Reach launched with 9 MP maps plus 8 firefight maps, then added 11 more MP maps over time and 2 firefight maps. So they certainly did add more content over time, to some extent.

So no, Bungie wasn’t drip feeding content into the game, but they offered significantly more content from the start. The campaign had an extensive variety of biomes, and incredible cutscenes that rendered in real time with your custom armor. The game had co-op, forge, and firefight at launch. A decade later and Infinite couldn’t even measure up, but gets defended because they’ll pump extra content into the game later.

25 helmets
24 attachments
45 visors
24 chests
25 shoulders
4 gloves
5 wrists
10 Utilities/Hip attachments
11 knee pads

This isn’t including content in the game files that haven’t been released yet

Infinite has far more content “available” at launch, most of it is just behind a paywall. With this system, nothing would be behind a paywall but you still have the option to skip a grind

You edited while I was responding so, lol
Infinite has 11 maps, which is normal for a Halo launch, it just doesn’t seem like a lot due to how few gamemodes there are to play them on. And the way they are designed makes them feel very repetitive

Please point out where I’m defending the decision to go f2p, lol.
If I was defending them, I wouldn’t be making MULTIPLE threads like this

I was responding primarily to your comment “They weren’t constantly pumping extra content into the games either”

Well they weren’t. 343 will probably have made the game’s size comparable to Reach within a year. The game is supposed to be THE Halo game for the next 10 years, I would’ve much rather them just give us a paid box model of $60, have a system like MCC with the option of skipping a grind to get stuff faster. They would still get money and we would be getting our money’s worth but the game is free, so we’re stuck with it now

Agreed!

What bothers me is that most of the justification around the campaign alone being $60 related to it being a live service, or being an open world, but the open world had a fraction of the content and depth that comparably priced open world campaigns have, and the live service elements for the campaign are almost surely going to ask us for more money. I have no confidence that they will add anything to update the campaign until they dump a new campaign on us for another $60.
