Everyone knows the reason behind changing the look of these new “Storm Elites.” The purpose was to make them seem more menacing, more villainous, and worthy once more of fighting against, after having Elites as allies in Halo 2-3.
But I certainly hope that all Elites don’t forever look like those Storm Elites. I hope the old look of the Elites remain intact for future Halo iterations, because I really didn’t like the look of these versions in Halo 4.
Do you think this is the new look of the Sangheili race, or is it just what the Storm faction looks like?
I dislike it and as far as I am concerned the Elites don’t look like that and I don’t care about whatever artist at 343i who made these has to say about it. Previous designs were iconic and carefully thought out. These are generic gribblies to me. I hope they revert in Halo 5.
I don’t mind the design at least in the context that its apparently only Storm Elites. If the rest of the (former) Covenant Elites show in Halo 5 I hope they have the armour they had in Halo 3 - it was much better looking.
They have all tried to genetically modify themselves, its loaded with irony.
To imitate the Demons. Humans normally associated with maggots or worms, to Demons. They try to capture that evolution and power and use it against the Demons and heretics.
It also emulates their need to fit in with the Forerunners and their “mutations” even if they don’t yet know of mutations.
If the original Elites are gone forever, I’m pissed.
While they look more stripped down, yet much more menacing, and intimidating in some ways, I enjoyed their appearance it was pretty similar to Reach’s.
I however think Elites in general vary in appearance. I believe the Arbiter will have a strong and powerful appearance yet not look nearly as villainous or frightening.
I hope the allied Elites still look like the ones in Halo 3. That was the last armor permutation they were seen wearing. I do miss some armors like the Ultra and Zealot of the game, Reach. However, to maintain canon, they should NOT change the armor for the allies.
Completely agree. I’m not particularly fond of the new elites, but I can live with it. I kind of dislike how their mandibles seem to overlap parts of their faces.
I just tell myself that they only look like that due to ethnicity reasons. Elites have ethnicities just like we do, and the storm elites are mostly from a remote planet anyway. That’s why their skin is paler and they have different facial structures.
EDIT: Just realised there are no spec-ops elites. Oops.
I really hope that they merely represent some different ethnic groups within the select Covenant species. I’d be really disappointed if this is how Elites, Grunts, and Jackals were retconned to appear like. Their physiology is quite bizarre and far too different for comfort. I would have preferred it if 343i had used something more reminiscent of the former Covenant designs.

You got a source on the genetic modification part? If so, that’s pretty cool and I like the idea of that.
Also, I do quite like the Storm so long as the older 2/3 Sangheili are still the main ones; as said before, they were the best. That said, however, I haven’t considered them particularly ‘menacing’ or anything like that in the Campaign. Perhaps it’s because we’re so used to them, but whereas a few years ago encountering a Zealot would have had me shaking in my space-boots, I just tend to view them all as cannon fodder now. The Prometheans have superseded them in ‘menace’ factor and they just look tame in comparison now, I think.
I really dislike how the faces of the new Sangheili are made up other than that I really don’t mind their appearance as long as other Sangheili have the Halo 3 or Halo: Reach appearance.
