Let's talk Spartan Ops

This, I believe, is my first time on these forums. I’m a long time Halo fan (since before Combat Evolved shipped), read everything, watched everything, consumed everything. The Halo universe is easily my favorite imaginary world to immerse myself in. To be perfectly honest I was pretty disappointed when Spartan Ops was first announced as it just seemed like a CoD SpecOps ripoff. Since then it’s turned into one of my favorite parts of Halo 4. Ironically, it’s the CGI movies that keep me coming back every week more than the actual missions.

And that’s what I’m here to talk about: Spartan Ops. I want to know where other core Halo fans stand on what’s going on in the Halo story right now.

  1. Sarah Palmer: I thought she was a little cocky in the campaign mode, but not so bad. Spartan Ops, on the other hand, has made me despise her. Which leads to my next point…
2)Dr. Halsey: I’m an old fan, which means I’m a Dr. Halsey fan. This whole “criminalizing” of DR. Halsey is an interesting story arc, but only if it ends with her redemption. If John was there and saw how they were doing Dr. Halsey he’d be -Yoinking!- up everybody.
3)Jul M’dama: I think he’s a really likable villain. I like him in the books, I like him in the game. I’ll be disappointed if he dies anytime soon.
4)Thorn: I really like Thorn, I’m hoping to see Palmer relieved of her rank and replaced by Thorn (Like how Laskey replaced Del Rio).
5)Capt. Laskey: I’ve been really happy with the evolution of Laskey as a character, I hope to continue to see him stand up to Capt/Admiral Osman and ONI and do what’s right.
6)Capt./Admiral Osman: I was torn before on Osman because I like her character in the books but didn’t care for her attitude toward Halsey, though I understood it. But after seeing the video for episode 8 of Spartan Ops, my opinion of her has taken a nose dive.

So that’s the gist of my opinions of the characters in Spartan Ops, I’m curious to know what everybody else thinks.

Hey Ben,

I completely agree with you. Spartan ops started slow but the second half really got interesting.

I also agree with your character analysis. They are ruining Palmer but my hope is they’ll correct that in the future. She’s got potential but the writing for her character is very unimaginative. As for Thorne I like him but if he starts to play a ‘chief’ role that might change. Oh and here’s hoping they lay off Halsey, I’m not thrilled with the criminal piece either. If it weren’t for her there’d be no ONI left to persecute her.

Sorry for the late response, work and all that, but I’m glad I’m not alone in my views. Having watched the last episode of the season since this post, things don’t look good for Dr. Halsey, considering the arm and all. We’ll see what happens in season 2, but if 343 doesn’t handle this situation with Halsey right, they risk completely alienating this long time, die hard Halo fan.
