Anyone else who is a true Halo veteran here knows how iconic the Halo music was while Marty O’Donnell was doing the music. I loved it, so did many other people. Marty definitely tried to make the heroic feeling and I think he succeeded spectacularly. I will never forget the Halo 3 OST ‘Never Forget’, every time it plays I find myself humming away to memory of the tune. Those moments were awesome.
I’m just not sure what Neil Davidge was wanting to create with the Halo 4 soundtrack, I got it on Spotify and listened to it, a lot, and some pieces I really like, was it Arrival, Revival? The one that played when the Didact woke? Anyway, they were good, that was good, it matched the feel of what was going on, ancient evil awakes, we’re all going to be composed, cue evil sounding choir so on, so forth, but the rest of the soundtrack was, well, quite forgettable.
Music is important to gaming, and by these changes to the music I’m wondering if this is the music 343 want’s to stick with or if Neil Davidge is really just a legend in the making. We will see.
I liked it. I listened to the Halo 3, ODST, and Reach soundtracks for comparison, and I felt Halo 4’s style was more modern and cinematic. I would enjoy some throwbacks and remasters of old themes in new games, but in the new style.
And we need some percussive tracks. Halo 4 was lacking in that department.
I liked it. I’ve heard that Davidge had limited time to work on the soundtrack though. Davidge also has to get the score to match the tone and feeling of the universe and game, and I’d say the best explanation to the music becoming so different is that the Halo Universe is changing… maybe drastically.
Prefer the old soundtracks but if it’s going to be featured in Halo 4, it’s got to match Halo 4.
I like it but, there is something missing. Maybe it is because I am so so use to the classic organic feel of Marty as to Davidge’s electronic, cinematic music. I believe he needs to find a good balance.
A big problem was that the in-game music was to low.

This…however, Neil Davidge, if he returns to compose Halo 5/XB1, should at least add some, if not all, tracks from previous titles, to give it the “halo feeling” again. Halo 4’s soundtrack, excluding 117, which is the best, was too slow and sounded more like a movie soundtrack rather than a game soundtrack.

It was designed to feel more cinematic, which fit Halo 4 better.
Bringing back the old music would be kind of like forcing it in where it’s not made for. The old music was designed for the original trilogy.
I’d prefer spiritual successors/remakes of tracks that fit into the newer cinematic style. Throwbacks and nostalgia moments, but stands perfectly fine on its own and fits the game.
Also, the music needs to be louder. At least give us music/sound volume control.
One of the things I felt about Halo 4’s tracks were that they weren’t really well implemented in the game. You didn’t quite hear the swelling where it seemed like they should, or really immerse you like the original trilogy. It just kind of played in the background.
Midnight should be an example of how the whole game’s tracks should have been lined up. “Loud”, fitting, epic. Went great with the evdnts taking place, swelling at the right moments and really going out with a bang in the music area, like the original trilogy did in almost all of its music sequences.
i didnt like it. i didnt feel it fit in and most of the time it blended into the background noise and wasnt really noticeable anyway. seems like half the time i didnt even know music was playing.
i didnt realize just how great marty was until he was gone. now when i play any other halo i enjoy and appreciate the music much more.
