By now, I think most us can agree that the story of Halo 5 was disappointing. None of the characters went through any development (except for John somewhat, for the time he was in it), it brought Cortana (a fragment of her at least) back and made her into the villain, and it went in a direction that’s been done a million times which we didn’t want to see. Material released after Halo 5 hasn’t done much to improve on this direction (Dominion Splinter wasn’t much help either aside from the fragment stuff). What we need to do it wait for Halo 6 to come out. I know many people have lost their faith in the story getting better, but don’t be such a downer. Halo 5 was written by a certain guy, making it his 4th strike in the Halo Universe. I hope with the backlash to the writing is taken to heart, and another writer is given the task of penning the script for Halo 6. This AI revolution story has been done a million times, but with this direction they can do something I don’t think has been done yet. In Halo 6, what you need to have is see how this has effected John. We need to see how he sees his former friend and ow he copes with this and whether or not he’ll pull the trigger. Yes, I would’ve rather had Cortana stay completely dead and have John cope with her loss and question everything in Halo 5. I say this direction the story has taken is disappointing, but let’s make the best of it and hope the direction can make for interesting and better story stuff in future installments.
The one thing I’ll give the direction the story has taken us, that could potentially be exciting is, it seems Cortana has mostly already pulled off her plan. The ending of halo5, and various little bits of info that we’ve gotten since then,(cannon fodder on the grunt mechs, background info on certain maps like riptide,etc), suggest Cortana is largely in charge of most of the galaxy. The UNSC is mostly shut down, or on the run. This has all set up halo6 to not be a large military action against an encroaching force, but rather a small resistance movement against a powerful overlord… The odds are overwhelmingly against us, and I like it that way!
Halo 5s story was a mess for those who jsut play the games, as they just see it as “cortana goes rouge” and “more forerunner bad guys again”
In its basic form it is just that. It does however have quite afew links and nods to some of the exstended cannon from the books. But yeh overall it wasnt great.
Still It isnt like halo 6 cant be great, because there is already alot of frame work put down in the forerunner trilogy books and some of the storys out of Franctures. They should look to where the cannon is its strongest atm. Thats really not hard either.

Halos are turned on again thanks to some fragment of cortana, or what at least looks like her. Ofc where there are halos there is Flood.
Bring back the flood tbh, its the one story trope that has some much unkown still when so much of halo is now known.
Speaking of unknown bring in some ties to Precurses that are now starting to link into forerunners like the Domain being created by precursers and a certain A.I more advanced than anything known being in control, ie Abaddon.
If halo 6 can focus on the reintroduction of the flood, the links to how this all started to begin with , ie precursers. Show chief and blue team really go threw some -Yoink- and see how much they lean on each other when push comes ot shove, and make Halsey give them some really tough decisions in how they deal with it all, and we might be back on track for a great time.
If however halo 6 is just stop cortana, and then at the last scene we see flood back, i think halos in for a very rough time as that seems so obvious , lazy but yet just typical of franchises these days. Lets just hope that doesnt happen. Then we can look back at halo 5 and see the seeds being planted for what came in halo 6.
People think Halo 5 story is bad? Really, I have not noticed with all the threads popping up every two days.

Unfortunately , a lot of us had the same thoughts between 4 and 5. 343 over compensated for super social Halo by going hyper competitive Halo. Neither story was great and both multi-player components have issues that make them not Halo (IMO). With all of the great content BUNGIE produced , (Excluding The Fail of Reach) 343 has managed to ignore all / most of it and also managed to squander what ever hope or good will I had for them in the process , and I will be renting Halo before purchase for the foreseeable future.
