Lets Make Sprint Evolve To Cater To Everyone (Balance)

Hello Waypoint Community and 343 Employees.

I knew that this day would come since Halo 2. The day when those people that were asking for sprint in Halo would be given what they wanted, and it sounded good at first, but the first kind of sprint implemented in Reach was terrible, and that “prototype” of sprint for Halo can get lots of improvement.

The Problem

What was wrong with the Reach sprint you might ask?

First of all it only catered to one group from the Halo community, and that’s because of how it was implemented.

  • Used to sprint and double pummel (cheap and stupid).
  • Used to run away from battles (slowed down the game pace even more).
  • Used with Close Quarter Weapons to get more cheap kills (tactical knife + commando, anyone?).
  • Default moving speed was slower with the introduction of sprint (the point? make the game easier and slower? this wasn’t necessary).

I as a conservative Halo fan that I am, I would like sprint in Halo only if it isn’t like the Reach sprint, after all, you guys want new stuff, so why not ask for a new and better sprint mechanic?

Just look at this: Halo 4 sprint.

What has changed from Reach to Halo 4?

  • You don’t get slowed down when shot = You can still run away.
  • You can still sprint and double pummel.
  • You can still use it with Close Quarter weapons to get cheap kills like in this game called (insert banned word here).
  • Movement is unknown.

Nothing has changed! Sprint will be as bad in Halo 4 as it is in Reach.

The Solution

Sprint needs to cater a larger audience of people for it to be successful in Halo.

So the changes I had in mind where:

  • You get a X% slowing down when sprinting for every shot put in you with a certain weapon (e.g AR 1% per shot, DMR and BR 3%…). So if you put a shot in a spartan sprinting, congrats, he will be easier to catch if he doesn’t get help. This will discourage sprinting away from battles.
  • Your lunge assist is disabled for 1 second with non-close quarter weapon and with close quarter weapons 2 seconds with close quarter weapon after getting out of sprint.
This will add some skill to when you try to hit your opponent when trying to double pummel him.
  • Your default moving speed is still fast even when not using sprint, very good for strafing when you want to make it harder for people to hit you.

So what sprint turns out to be, is a tool to help your teammates faster, to make BTB more anjoyable and now it will cater to almost all of the Halo fan base meaning casuals and competitive alike.

Lets save Halo, lets make it please the people that weren’t pleased with the kind of first impression they had with sprint in Halo. Lets hope we get considered but please support this thread by posting your opinions in it! Thank you Waypoint community!

Double pummleing was really annoying in reach, I support these ideas 150%

What i just don’t get with sprinting is that if they want faster movement, make regular walking faster and more responsive, sprinting disables you from shooting and other actions, it slows down the game dramatically.
MLG removed sprint for one tournament, but increased walking speed to 120% I think, their community and best players called it the best event in over 5 years, they are comparing their current setup of rules to Halo 2 when it comes to enjoyment.
Now I don’t have an XBox at the moment so I haven’t tried it yet. But it seems like the best settings at the momen and it’s something I even enjoy watchingt.
It’s unfortunate that 343i and Bungie never experimented with these settings, that make the game slightly faster paced, more balanced and simple.

YES!!! I’m not the only one that thinks that Halo Reach needed the Spartans to be slowed down when shot. The amount of time’s I got sword lunged is incredible. I agree with you wholeheartedly.

Meh, increase movement speed to 120% and remove sprint, problem is fixed. People don’t get across small maps too fast, but they can traverse large maps in the same amount of time as reach. You can shoot while chasing so it doesn’t play a role as an issue in 1v1 fights. etc etc… There is no reason for sprint other than “I R A SPARTAN I SHUD BE ABLE RUN!!”

Reach with 120% movement speed and no sprint isn’t quit halo 2 or 3 but its damn good compared to vanilla reach.

It’s fairly widely accepted. Although sprint is honestly one of my lesser worries in halo 4…

There’s a good thread as well.

Almost none of this is true

  • Yes when he gets shot he doesn’t get killed but if the damage is higher along with fast kill times then this will not be a problem
  • There is no Proof that this is still in the game its s simple fix to prevent a second melee the only shot we see of sprinting and then melee it cut off and while this is a widely know issue why wouldn’t they fix it unless its for balancing issues.
  • You have no proof of this unless you have seen some new info that every one else has in this case i would love to see it
  • Have you not seen the screen caps of the multiplayer th movement speed is way faster then in reach.
    Halo 4 movement

I think we should just accept the fact that having sprint in Halo inherently implies that escaping becomes a lot easier, and finishing your kills harder.

Don’t get me wrong, I can name more than 5 valid reasons why sprint is detrimental to hyper-competitive play.

It’s just that Halo has become a game that is designed with sprint in mind. It’s so different from sprintless Halo that you can’t return to no sprint without redesigning maps etc. (but please, try to make a no-sprint environment for competitive players, 343i? pretty please?)

Arena, the way it is now, is the perfect example of a competitive gametype that still has sprint in it. It plays okay (not as epic as classic did, but still okay.)

But, having sprint, yet not allowing sprinters to escape, is contraintuitive and frustrating. It’s frustrating because the mechanic you suggest takes away a lot of predictability. If you see someone five metres away from a door, and you know it takes exactly five seconds to reach that door, and you know you can land 5 DMR shots in that time, you know how the encounter is going to end. Having sprinters slow down when shot creates uncertainty, both for the sprinter and the shooter, because this prediction will be infinitely more difficult.

As much as I hate it, I have accepted that Halo, with sprint, is now about surviving when you get shot from an unknown direction by sprinting to safety, knowing who to chase when you can’t finish a kill, and listening to callouts so that one shots can be cleaned up. I’ve accepted that it plays slower.

The only fix to sprint from Reach is maybe reducing the time that is needed to come out of it, so that people sprinting around the corner have a better chance of winning a 1v1.

I know competitive play and know how bad sprint is for it. But what I am asking is for a better sprinting mechanic so that sometimes I can go play default Halo 4 and have fun unlike in Reach. Because sprint in Reach is terrible

I don’t want 1 or 2 playlists where there isn’t sprint to have fun, I want sprint to improve so that many including me can adpat to it.

Right now I ONLY play MLG in Reach, not even anniversary pleases me, because of that inconsistent pistol and the retaded jumping.

Sprint got the nerf just saying. The first look we saw is clearly a old build

Could be, but do you got any vid to confirm that?

I’ve seen the Conan video, and default movement and strafing were pretty good, but there wasn’t any sprinting in it.

If you are being shot while in sprint, you are now automatically slowed…to stop people from sprinting away from a loser gun fight…go listen to the sparkast

Spark cast bro.

Hell they even quoted some post like running away from battles and sprint double beatdowns. So who said they dont listen lol

Or just not have sprint. I’m more of a fan of just amping up the speed of running. Sprinting is so… old, and it’s not a creative way to make someone move faster. See Tribes for reference.

Could you link me to it.

I already believe it, but maybe there are other things I don’t yet know.

Thank you for telling me this, and thanks to Frankie for improving sprint.

I also don’t like sprint in Halo, but now that it’s improved I think that I’ll be able to adapt this time around.

Never adapted to the Reach sprint and never will, it’s the MLG playlist for me until November 6.

Average gamer would question halo if it dint have sprint. Seeing it was in reach. Would not add up

I’d rather have a taboo game with a low population, and small sales then a game that just copies other games with a lot of people playing it.

in the sparkcast they said you do slow down when you get shot in sprint

Lol no you dont. People complain about population as it is. Dont kid yourself. I rather have people care about halo again. Do you really want the series ro end up like megaman?
