Let's Clarify the Smart Scope System

After watching the videos on Halo 5’s beta I just want to give my interpretation on how the “new” system works.

Smart Scope:
At first (like many others) I was terrified to see what appeared to be ADS in Halo as the series always featured “scoping” as a game mechanic. Now after being able to analyze the footage a bit it looks to be no problem.

Firing your weapon from the un-zoomed state seems to function as it always did. You are just as precise as before and capable of strafing like the past games.

When you are zoomed in you STILL RETAIN the degree of precision in your shot but this time at a zoomed in state. You do not sacrifice movement speed and are susceptible to being de-scoped when shot. JUST LIKE BEFORE.
The only difference I see is that instead of the scoped in view we are used to, it is from the spartan’s point of view. Weapons like the BR still grant x2 zoom.
So, in reality this new smart scope is essentially just an aesthetic change and should not be worth overreacting to. The reason why 343i put it in? No clue, but I am eager to try it out. My only real complaint from a visual standpoint is how damn ugly the BR now looks (seriously what’s up with that holographic sight bleh).

So, what do you guys think?

I have to say that I actually like it. The BR does look a tad ugly, as it’s hard to make out any details on the weapon other than its general shape, but the way they’ve designed the new version of the zoom-in feature looks great. So long as it doesn’t provide any significant advantage, and functions identically to previous games in that it doesn’t make hipfire any less important, then I think it’s fine. c: I actually think this enhances the immersion for me as well.

By your understanding of the way the smart scope system works is it true to say that it is an aesthetic change to the point that players could be given the option to change attachments to a traditional BR zoom scope and this would not cause any unfairness between players?

Also, as a side note I’ve now seen two pieces of gameplay footage with the BR - one where it functioned like the single-shot DMR and another where there appeared to be 3-round bursts. Does it appear to you that fire rate is an option?

I like everyone was sceptical but it seems to work really well, nicely balanced with descoping. Good job 343i.

Whilst it looks like an aesthetic change, it also has the impact of not ‘blackening out’ around the scope.

Therefore your field of view or what you can see remains larger, which could be beneficial

Wow, I didn’t even think about that! I just hope that it doesn’t have a negative impact on the game - something we’ll find out when the Beta arrives

I was amused with so many people freaking out from that short leaked video that they though Halo had ADS now, since it still looks like the regular zoom we have had in past Halo. Just that is seems every weapon can “zoom” instead of that binocular kind of vision you got from zooming with scopeless weapons, making you have to unscope to shoot. I’m completely fine with that change.

But since the physical scope actually blocks your view the targeting looks to be harder.

Peripheral view was never “blacked out”, only dimmed. You could always see outside the scope.

It may not mess with gameplay but it messes with lore. The reason the scopes were how they were in previous games was because they were electronic scopes that put the scope image onto your visors HUD. So Spartans and ODSTs did NOT have to aim down sights.

The only positive thing I see there is that u can actually see what’s going on around you even when zoomed in.

The controls say otherwise…
But I am curious to see how ADS will work in halo.

Wow that is an odd scheme. Grenade as LB is strange. Regardless, I think they mentioned many alternative schemes in the BTS video meaning we can probably expect to see some where zoom is mapped to the right stick.

It would make sense for them to have a control scheme similar to Destiny and Call of duty, seeing as they’re insanely popular games.

Flame me all you want, I’m totally against the Smart Scope system. Against it in every aspect.

Smart scope in a nutshell:

Halo’s zoom mechanic applied to all weapons and has a fancy new look. Stick it on LT and you’ve got Halo using the modern standard for control schemes. Stick it on right stick and it’ll be controls just like you remember.

I was thinking the same, it’s exactly the same as past halo’s but with a different aesthetic. I love how you can aim the ground smash, too many games you just have to press the button above them and hope for the best.

I don’t really like it, either. There was nothing wrong with the current scope system…And zooming with the AR just doesn’t feel right, much less the energy sword, of all things!

I think adding on a zoom to automatics like the AR could give it a better chance when up against a BR or DMR. That being said, I don’t see myself using smart scope with the AR much unless I’m trying to kill long distance and there is no other alternative weapon.

Agreed. Honestly I can adapt to almost anything thrown into the game, You could even say I was one of those who enjoyed Halo 4. however tampering with the controls, specifically zooming which was a core change to the gameplay is something I can’t handle. =[
