Let's be honest, coatings are not great

Coatings should have been new surface textures only and the colors should’ve been free. For example, you could have certain peices a metallic, corroded, or matte finish, etc.

What they always should have done with coatings is not assign colors to them, just make a certain pattern. Let the player choose what colors they want with the certain coating.

I think this whole thing can simply be described as a disastrous release. Technically, they label it as a Beta and Season 1, but players expect the complete customization options now. This was likely an unfinished product and, as I said previously, will be the most patched Halo of all time. I believe there is a custom coating palette, but nobody will even know about it cause it’s locked up in their “Beta” release.

It’s just a very unfinished release, and was not a smart move, to be honest.

Yeah, the whole armor core thing is… scary, but that’s another discussion. Coatings can 110% co-exist with colors, it’s like painting a wall vs painting a mural on the wall. It’s painfully obvious the current structure was done for the publisher’s greed so their hands may be tied in terms of changing it, but I hope we get our basic primary/secondary color system back, and have the opportunity to unlock & buy really cool armor coatings.

My favourite signature armor paint I had in MCC/360 will most likely never come back the exact way I had it.

I do feel that the armour core and coating system are a bit of a step back, and it doesn’t help that they make absolutely everything either a store exclusive, or a part of the premium battle pass.

sadly, i dont mind the coatings too much. but at the same time i want the primary and secondary colors back. the reason i dont mind is because by doing coatings it normalizes the colors we know we will see in game, and so you cant push an artificial advantage in pvp by wearing red or blue and junk like that. alternatively its a good way, and bad practice, to monetize colors.

This. These coatings should have been made for color schemes that you couldn’t recreate with the Primary/Secondary system. Leave the old fashioned Primary/Secondary system in the game, and then create special coatings that look sick af that could be unlocked in the BP. Having unlockable coatings as the ONLY way to change your spartan’s color, and THEN locking them behind a paywall, is a bit of a -Yoink!- move IMO

I think there are some cool ones, but I do really wish I could still just customize my colors.

The coating system is good for the two flights and the beta I just we can have creative freedom on further armor colors, particularly not have to use micro transactions to acquire them the same could be said for future armor pieces they acquired like in halo 3 and reach

My main issue with coatings is that they can’t be used on everything. My favorite coating can only be used on the Mark VII. There is no reason why I can’t apply it to everything other than 343i telling me I can’t. There is no reason why you have to have 5 of a coating just to use it on everything.

The shader system does show some promise though. But if they’re going to copy the Destiny 2 shader system, then I want to use it on everything, no obituary restrictions such as “can only be used on a Mark VII core”. I want that -Yoink!- on everything.

I am kind of okay with coatings. Obviously custom colors would be better, but I think as more coatings are released over time there will be a coating that suits jist about everybody. Also if they removed the coating system my SR152 Watchdog coating would be gone :stuck_out_tongue:

One thing I DEFINITELY do not like is that most coatings can’t be used across armor cores. The restrictive armor core system needs to be the next thing 343 addresses after they fix challenges/progression.

I like my Funko coating. Clean and fun colors.

I called this over a year ago when the coatings were announced that there will likely be less than 100 options replacing a system that had 3600. And that’s just in Halo 5 which had less options than previous titles.

It’s a major slap in the face considering Anthem, a game that failed horribly, actually did customization right. Their customization system was multiple color channels that could be selected with a full color wheel, and a texture option for each channel as well. If 343 had done something down that route it would have been the pinnacle of Halo armor customization for colors.

For real they should have just sold armor patterns/textures, removing colors was super uncalled for.
I would have been way more supportive if it was just the texturing and color layouts that we could color. Imagine like the layouts from alternative helmets from Halo 5 but a general armor thing I would be so down for that but nah.

Coatings should have been for super cool/specific color schemes (kinda like the Gundam-looking one that’s up) and still use primary/secondary for the standard colorings.

I’ve hated them from the beginning, now that the game has launched I can see they’re even worse than I originally anticipated, they’re ridiculously restrictive being tied to cores and fundementally I don’t like a system where I have to pick from pre-created sets of colors over a system like we previously had where I had many colors to mix how I wanted, there’s just flat out less choice and it’s clear this system was created by people with nothing but dollar signs in their eyes.

How it should be:

Coatings = patterns with primary, secondary, tertiary color options
Colors = all unlocked by default/an RGB picker for ultimate control

I see no good reason for why Halo Infinite doesn’t have a customization system on par with the car painting system in Forza Horizon 5.

This is the best compromise.

Free players get to choose their colour scheme from static colours while premium players get fancy patterns and combinations.

The game is fantastic, but I have to agree that the progression and customization is ridiculous - who thought this will be a good idea?!

It is a bit a ironic, since they mentioned how important customization is for the Halo series, yet this is probably the most limited Halo customization we’ve had… EVER.

Even Halo 2 MCC has more customization options right from the get go.

Also, the fact that you can’t make your own emblems with various elements takes away that personalization aspect as well…

They NAILED the gameplay, but somehow messed up the simple stuff.
