You may have noticed that some of the armors in Halo 5: Guardians have unique textures. Achilles, for example, has a more metallic texture to it that is very different from the plastic-looking armor in the rest of the selection. Then there’s the Icarus armor set, which has a pretty nice glossy texture to it; it’s every bit as plastic-y as the vanilla armor textures, but not quite as ugly… and then you have Dynast armor, which also has a clean metallic texture similar to Achilles, but with more of a matte finish.
Have you ever looked at these armors, with their infinitely better-looking textures, and wished you could apply them to any suit of armor in the game?
I sure have. This is one of my biggest wishes for Halo 5’s armor customization, second only to full customization and black techsuits. If 343 Industries could implement something like this, it could vastly improve the look of the armor that’s already in the game.
How hard would it be for 343 Industries to add an “Armor Texture” category with “Matte”, “Glossy”, and “Metallic” options? I would love to apply those textures to the Classic Helmets we just got. Hell, imagine combining Mark IV GEN-1 armor with a black techsuit,Mark V Delta, and the Metallic texture from the Achilles armor. Just try and picture it in your head, and tell me that would not look more badass than anything that currently exists within Halo 5’s armor customization.
On top of this, it would be great to have a colour wheel, instead of the limited palette we have now. Seriously, we still don’t have purple and teal, and true Chief Green would be obtainable with a wheel for sure.
The last combo would be good, but I’m still sticking with the Achilles helmet and Wrath Anhur armor system, primarily pepper, secondary salt. I wished I could change the decal color from something other than white. I would make the flame decals red if I could and use my Rampant VISR system. But yeah. Would be nice to add a matte metallic finish to the armor.

yeah like preset armors that you customize, thats cool.
As someone who LOOOOVVES Saints Row, I approve wholeheartedly of this. I’ve gotten my armor to a close approximation to what I want but I would vove to have these options to get even closer.

Oh yes, I am in full support of the color wheel. Anything to expand on the lackluster customization of Halo 5: Guardians.

A lot harder than you think. This would likely require a full adjustment to how and when the armors or rendered… or simply adding in at least 3 versions of each armor. Obviously the latter is a really inefficient solution and would likely cause other issues such as reduced UI responsiveness.
Adjusting the engine to implement something like this is likely too much of an undertaking for Halo 5… maybe something you could petition for in the next title.

I honestly don’t think having extra customization on armor, that you don’t get to see most of the time since it is a FPS, is worth a performance decrease on a game, right now the worst case scenario should be 24 different armors and helmets, add all the other bits and pieces and I can imagine it could be quite messy(just mentioning that as it comes up pretty often on the customization topic), adding textures to the mix I imagine wouldn’t be too good either.

Why must you be so pessimistic? In previous games, we could mix and match different armor pieces without any impact on performance, and that was with inferior technology. I don’t see how changing textures would be any different.

But in the case of Halo 5 the scale is bigger than in previous games, I would imagine it would be possible on every Arena mode, but having hundreds of possible combinations of armor or just textures in something like warzone sounds to me like it’d be pretty heavy on the game. Of course that’s just my opinion, I don’t really have much insight on how the game works and what would be reasonable for the X1/dedicated servers when it comes to customization.

> Why must you be so pessimistic? In previous games, we could mix and match different armor pieces without any impact on performance, and that was with inferior technology. I don’t see how changing textures would be any different.
There also weren’t multiple different textures for each separate piece nor the sheer amount of armor options available. The ‘technology’ point is moot for multiple reasons - 1) better technology doesn’t mean you’re left with any ‘additional’ horsepower. Every resource available is leveraged to run a next-gen game. 2) It comes down to the engine. You don’t want to make engine changes for such a small ‘improvement’ and even just adding in textured variants means increased UI work, not to mentioned an order of magnitude file increase for each texture you add.
You have to think about this - if the engine is altered to allow for a different texture rendering of each armor model… how much does that impact? You can’t easily make changes to the engine JUST for armor models (unless that functionality was built in with this in mind already) so what does it impact? When and how geo-textures are rendered? When in the rendering process is this done? How does when it happen affect line of sight? How does it affect load times? How does it affect frame rate? Are there unintended consequences in other areas of the game?
My point is, these ‘simple fixes’ are far more complex than you’re considering.

I disagree. I would rather have more customization at the expense of some performance. Many don’t like how this game performs already, and any change is better than no change.
The frame rate is awful, the textures load whenever they feel like it, and the lighting is sub par. If having more freedom over our Spartans looks means 30 seconds of incomplete rendered Spartans running around at the beginning of the match than so be it.

So your answer is to make the game run worse so you can look cooler?

Plus, trading performance for customization would also make our multiplayer Spartans look worse, most likely, rendering it kinda pointless…

Adding customization would not have an impact on performance. It’s never hurt the game before; they already completely changed the color palette, and the only reason we don’t have full armor customization is because of some artistic BS… I forget exactly what was said, but apparently 343’s art team decided they wanted all of the armor in the game to look a certain way, and thus denied us the means to change it. Something along those lines?
Even if it did have the slightest impact on performance, I honestly wouldn’t care if they dropped the game down to 30fps if it meant finally having some decent customization in this game. I was perfectly fine with 30fps in Halo 3, Halo: Reach, and Halo 4… 60fps is cool, but very much overrated.

In this case: Yes.
Reason: the game is already flawed visually and in many eyes also flawed mechanically. 343’s reason for these issues have been lackluster. If the game took a visual performance dip because the game allowed more complexity for customization then at least that would be a decent excuse for the performance setback.
Its a logical veiwpoint, especially since Halo is no stranger to setting performance back to allow a more agreeable product to come to pass.
