Personally, I think 343i has been putting far too much work into making different variants rather than making new and more memorable armor or giving more customization for H5. Personally, I Loved H4’s customization as it had a lot that you can do, and most of the armors didn’t look too much like they were just rushed or put in simply cause they wanted more armor. Also, kinda off topic, but on the idea of customization, I think emblems need to go back to how they were in Reach and 4 where you actually made your emblem. Anyways, what do you guys think 343i should do in the base of customization, armor, and emblems?
Instead of 4 variants of a set of armor we get one highly detailed armor set and because they want to bring back micro transactions we get things like camo skins, cracked visors, knives and other little things for our one set of armor like we did in reach.
Like this:
Armor:
- Helmet - Visor - Armor - Shoulders - Forearms - Gloves - Legs - Boots - Undersuit - 2 or 3 slots of accesories (for things like pads, hood, scarfs, knives, bullets, etc.)With 3 slots of color for the armor and 2 slots of color for the undersuit.
Emblems:
The level of customization of the other Halo games (Halo 3, 4 and Reach) that we can use in our armor.
Pretty sure they made this many variants to push the REQ system.
Ya, Halo 4 customization was better than Halo 5. I hope they get it right in Halo 6!

I’m surprised we haven’t been offered a cracked helmet.

Actually, I don’t know about that. Halo 5 gave us lots of new armor. Like, way too much new armor. Sure they gave us a lot of re-skins but the amount of new armor they introduced is insane. So I don’t think it’s quite right to say they didn’t put much work into making new armors, at least in comparison to how much work they put into different variants of it.
But the fact that they’ve put so much work into all these new armors is exactly the problem, if you ask me. This is just my opinion, but many of the helmets feel rushed and poorly-designed. Like Killer Orca said, it was probably done because of the req system. But if 343 decided to make less armor, but put more care into its design, then maybe we would have gotten more memorable new armors, like you mentioned. And not so many sets like Seeker which are memorable for the wrong reasons…
As for customization, they could have just made it so that each armor set is one permanent unlock, but gives you the option to equip each part of it separately. For example, you start with Recruit armor, but if you unlocked the Warrior armor, then you’d be able to mix and match them, like putting on Warrior shoulders but keeping the Recruit helmet or something. But either way, what we have now in Halo 5 would be a mess if we had full customization, because many armor sets would be missing pieces. Examples:
- Cypher, Maverick, and Vector don’t have original shoulders, instead having the Scout shoulders. So they would just end up being helmets and chest pieces. - Deadeye, Locus, Scanner, and Strider helmets didn’t get their own original armors, but re-skins of armors from other sets, which would be pointless and silly if we had full customization. - Most of the armors re-use the same arms and legs.If each armor+helmet set was its own req card, but with the pieces being able to be mixed and matched after unlocking them, then most of the armor unlocks would consist of a helmet, chest piece, and shoulders and not much more, and sometimes less (unless you want to have separate Cypher, Maverick, Scout, and Vector shoulders but all of them looked the same, which would be silly). In order to solve this, maybe they could have done something like what we got in Halo 4, where there were less options for arms and legs and they didn’t match specific sets. But 343 probably thought that would be too complicated, and they can double the amount of armor unlocks (because they have a req pool to fill up) if they consolidated the arms, legs, chest, and shoulders into one armor piece but kept the helmets separate. That’s my guess, anyway.

In any case, this whole mess of poorly-designed, not very customizable armor in Halo 5 is most likely a result of the req system and I really hope it doesn’t come back in Halo 6. But if it does, then I think each armor+helmet set should be unlocked from one card, and give the ability to mix and match the pieces, and each armor should have its own unique arms and legs and shoulders and everything (sorry if that’s too much work, 343, but maybe try designing less of them).
I did like Halo 4’s armor customization. Personally I think full arms and legs are better than knee/thigh/wrist attachments like we had in Halo Reach. Although we could have both in Halo 6. As for emblems, I could go either way. I don’t really care too much about those. And I think the color of the undersuit should also be fully customizable, not just always black on some or all of it.
But I care much more about how the armors look, than how much customization we get. I want 343 to stop designing too-ugly-to-wear helmets like Seeker and Recluse and Nomad etc. I want them to make sure the visors on the helmets actually line up with where the Spartan’s eyes would be (unless they obviously aren’t meant to, like the Gungnir and Wetwork helmets), and keep a consistent size. I want them to put effort into making them look good, and not give us anything like Decimator or Mark V Alpha again. Some people might disagree with my opinions, but I feel like those helmets were just poorly designed and probably rushed. I like to wear full sets anyway and I generally don’t mix and match, so better looking armor is much more important to me than customization options. All the ugly helmets really diluted the excitement of opening req packs, for me and many others. And so did all the visors that look almost exactly the same as other visors. I am really hoping the req system doesn’t come back.

There is Mark VI gen1 scarred, but that’s just one thing

Yeah, sorry. I meant cracked visor.

Do you mean the actual helmet or the visor because we have the Mk VI with cracked visor?

I meant the visor. I know that we have a Mark VI gen1 scarred Helmet as Nate reminded me.

Ok, I wasn’t sure but it would be cool to have a cracked helmet or a flaming one again.

Yes! Oh, yes. A flaming skull would be awesome!

Yes unfortunately 343 hasn’t decided to do things like flaming helmets or armor effects like Reach.
Here is my idea ive been saying since launch:
1: Have armour sets (all unique, proper spartan armour, no ugly filler nonsense like in Halo 5 and retcon/redesign certain ugly H4 armours).
2: Have skins/patterns/wear etc, that you only unlock ONCE, and they apply to ALL armour.
3: Then have little add-ons for specific helmets and armours (like reach helmets). Examples for armour would also be like reach, example Mark V UA (up armoured) with a black plate of armour on top of it (again like reach). Or Mark V grenadier-Mark V with a bandolier of grenades. Etc, and have this for the “main” armours, not all, as the game file size would be wayyy to big having it for all armour.
4: This should be the bare minimum, but its clear we need to emphasise this. Allow customisation of individual pieces (even H3 had this with shoulders/chest) at the level of H4.
5: Have a colour wheel instead of preset colours, so we can literally MAKE whatever colours we like.
6. Unique stuff like flaming helmets etc for tough accomplishments (legendary solo, LASO,SLASO etc).
These aren’t in order of importance. They are all equally important, like a chain.
EDIT: Realised I forgot one important thing…undersuits. They atleast must be black…but we should be able to colour them. Even Mass effect 3 (2012) has this.
