Less is more (Spartan Ops)

This has been on my mind for a while now but I feel like 343 should reduce the number of Spartan Ops missions from 5 to 1 or 3 and increase the length of each one. Less missions equals less repetitive maps. What are your thoughts?

Or they’ll still just reuse the maps every other episode.

Spartan ops is already finished so we should just hope they listened enough and improve it next time. The CG cut scenes are nice no need for improvement but the mission objective, game play and repetition of maps need improvement.

Edit: also make it longer by about five minutes for both missions and CG cut scenes.

> Or they’ll still just reuse the maps every other episode.

Or they’ll listen to the fans and not recycle the same maps over and over again.

sees outcry over map repetition from Episodes 1-5

sees Episodes 6-8 thus far and more repetition

Not likely.

Agreed

People complaining about repetition don’t understand why it is.

You really think in War. Military groups don’t go back to the same places because of enemy incursions? While I agree seeing the same map over and over can get old it makes sense.

You never know

I also think in war the military would be able to hold down areas longer than a few hours, especially if said military has a 3 mile long ship full of military hardware and supersolider teams.

But oh no, the scientists are under attack again for the third time, better go save them. Oh, you got shot down in the same area you cleared last week.

It’s like we’re playing hopscotch. We wash one place of enimies, leave and the dirt keeps coming back. Technically, nothing will truly get done if you keep dropping 4 Spartans in area at a time right? It just doesn’t seem realistic in war. They’d at least establish defenses there and expand their push.

Or the science team takes their defenses offline to power an experiment. Infinity Science must be an Aperture Laboratories affiliate with the unsafe work environment they run.

Super powered Armored cyborgs. Check.

"Sir the armor can’t survive two feet in water if fully submerged since the Flood incident on Earth, and for some reason on Reach.

We operate in space son.

"Yes sir, I would suggest the Spartans use showers only. No Hot tubs or use of the olympic heated pool. At all.

That won’t go over well. But pressing on. Super awesome Armored Vehicles. Check.

“Huh Sir, the vehicles send pain to everyone sitting in them when being shot”

Really?.. Really? What?! Who though that was a good idea?

" Motor Pool sir, said it would motivate the drivers to treat the vehicles better. Tax dollars at work sir."

Even the robot?

" Yes Sir."

Sonuv…okay… let’s move on. Awesome Air vehicles. What private?

" Sir, we can’t find a single Hornet."

Not one?

“No Sir.”

What did they all explode?

" No Sir we left them on Earth. But we got some nifty new weapons."

Great let me see them, son

" Sorry sir you’ll have to kill about seven Spartans from First battalion before we can send you one in a magical barrel. Also they tend to vanish if you stop looking at them."

" Sir where are you going?"

The Olympic Pool.

" You’ll just respawn sir. Most likely the Pool Guard will -Yoink!- your face Sir. Sir? Sir?

Ahh the UNSC.

I don’t get the UNSC, They say they are going on the Offensive yet, none of the cruiser and frigates are escorting it. No one is there when it arrives at Requiem twice except the internal frigates. Then the Marines can barely kill anything and then the Spartans don’t seem as effective as their predecessors even with advanced armor.

You’re not looking at this from the right mindset.

When playing through this all for the first time you might be thinking “hey, this looks a lot like the campaign! People are talking to me and the mission structure is generally linear. Oh, this mission isn’t set in a completely new environment, and hey it’s the same level geometry too. Boy, this sucks!”

But remember, this replaced firefight. It’s meant to be replayed and if each map only contains one scenario then it’s a pretty poor replacement for something that had gametype options and skulls. Having two, three, or four mission variants (of perhaps a couple dozen maps) gives us a comparable level of variability (that half a dozen maps but with more options provided) so it’s necessary for the long term use of SOPS.

There are file size limitations as well.
Did no one watch the 22 or 40 minute long (forgot which one) video about spartan ops on the front page? It gives some pretty nice insight.

I think they did a pretty good job with this week’s episode. Fun new areas in Apex, on Cyclone the mortars and Spartans as well as warthogs made things fun and fresh. Dodging them.

The warthogs made things fresh and Spartans as well on warrens. It was nice seeing switchback alive and accessing that area.

The combat flow for the fourth one was pretty nice. It reminded me of the beginning of assault on the control room as well as the silent cartographer.

The last mission was pretty cozzy.
