Legitimate Faults of Halo 3

There are some who complain about Halo 3 for arguably poor reasons.
I tend to ignore such individuals.

However, Halo 3 is not perfect.
In the case that 343i makes the smart move and builds off Halo 3, they should know what they should and shouldn’t keep.

So my question is this.
What are the legitimate faults of Halo 3?

While I hate Sprint with a passion, I can admit that Halo 3’s base movement speed is slow.

In competitive settings, the movement is bumped up to 110%.
110-115% would be perfect for Halo Xbox One.

Here is one:

The game is so amazing it’s hard to put down and you can tend to neglect other things you need to do. 6 years later I’m still playing. Halo 3 has had me hooked since that 2007 Sept 25th midnight release.

It’s a fault of Halo 3 but a wonderful one.

I would say that there are some major connectivity issues along with the whole armor lag thing when changing your Spartan’s appearance.

Host booting and lag are major problems. I won’t buy the Xbone but if they have dedicated servers, that problem will be fixed.

The ranking system rewards people teaming with deranker accounts so a less “locked in” ranking system like H2’s would be great. Leveling up shouldn’t be harder if you used to be bad.

Cortana/Gravemind moments were the worst possible way to integrate canon into gameplay. I liked how you became invincible during those moments, but they were still very annoying.

There was decent build-up for a fight with Gravemind and it was discarded for an entire level that was supposed to represent the fight… but it wasn’t.

The fight with 343 Guilty Spark was an easy cop-out and Johnson’s death was uncalled for. Nonetheless, expect the Halo 3 Done Segmented version of the fight to be a lot more epic!

While it was impressive that they were able to imbue Scarabs with AI, most of them just stood in place turning. Boarding them was easy with the Hornet or through the use of ramps but on The Storm, you had little to none provisions if you missed the first chance. It could be frustrating.

The size of the Scarab’s deck was also disappointing. The Halo 2 Scarab offered a lot of roaming space whereas the Halo 3 Scarab is terribly linear. It gets on my nerves how those railings which are supposed to stop the crew from falling off actually act as impediments. It’s also disappointing how there’s no particular reason to go below the Scarab’s deck.

The following is just a speedrunning qualm:

The lack of weapon carry-over between Sierra and Crow’s Nest, Crow’s Nest and Tsavo Highway, and The Ark and The Covenant was disappointing; the gravity hammer would have been very useful to have at the start of the latter missions.

It’s also disappointing how the Gravity Hammer usually appears late in a mission, where it’ll have little to none use.

Could have crisper hit detection but i think aiming for the neck is one of those bits of knowledge you pick up after a while. (the “hidden” knowledge that 343 said they wanted to remove, but hey, another thread another day.)

The only thing I can really think of is the BR aiming. The BR spread, lack of hitscan, and how you have to lead shots makes it frustrating to shoot sometimes. Halo 2 BR was awesome. Other than that Halo 3 was GREAT.

Also the ranking system was SLIGHTLY off. I would prefer the Halo 2 ranking system.

The weapon sandbox was kinda out of whack.

While I agree that the Battle Rifle should not have spread, I disagree that the Battle Rifle should have hitscan.
Projectile bullets widened the skill gap.
It also limited cross-mapping a lot.

How so?

What was the point of the Gravemind helping the Chief and Arbiter out, then trying to devour them after Truth dies? They were a testament to a much ancient conflict…

Unaccounted for oddity.

Yeah, Projectiles are better.

I think it is just fine. At least it isn’t like Halo 4 where there is 1000 1sk weapons.

One of the only things I like about H4 is, that you a able to always spawn with a br. If that was implemented in H3 it would be a near perfect game.

High Charity reaching the Ark is a plot hole.

There are actually several areas where Halo 3 would benefit amazingly with a novel.

How did Johnson and Miranda and Arby get back to Earth? How many ODPs were still active? How much of the Home Fleet was obliterated?

Alao, other things like Miranda’s “To War” statement that completely ruined my view of her character.

High Charity getting to the Ark. Need I say more?

Actually it did not widen the skill gap. If you compare MLG Halo 2 to MLG Halo 3 you’ll notice that the skill gap was much wider with Halo 2, where the tops teams always won the tournaments. With Halo 3 there were often huge upsets and things like 8 seeds beating 1 seeds. Lack of hitscan promotes randomness and missed shots for a sloppier game. As far as cross-mapping, Halo 2 didn’t have a problem with that, as that is more of a map design issue.

Random BR spread and a bad netcode.

Grid-based aiming.
