I was just curious what y’all thought of the idea of “Legendary Weapons” in Halo. For me, I think it’s kinda stupid. Here’s a quote from the Req Packs explanation post: “Some legendary items are so rare and so storied that they transcend the standard rarity levels and are considered Mythic.” Really? “Storied?” How likely is it really that specific weapons have stories behind them?
Take Linda’s sniper for example, Nornfang. As a Spartan, she’s movin’ and groovin’ on the battlefield, constantly changing tactics and dropping or picking up weapons as needed–is she really gonna hold on to the same sniper long enough for stories to crop up around it? And even if she did manage to keep hold of the same weapon all the time, would stories actually crop up around it? In the Halo universe, that strikes me as odd, and as more an appeal to Destiny fans than a legitimate in-universe occurrence ('specially since these “storied” weapons have never been mentioned before and involve characters we’ve known for a while).
Even the whole naming thing… I mean, “Nornfang?” I’m sure it’s some Norse mythological reference, but it still sounds like something I’d pick up in Fable or the Elder Scrolls… just feels out of place.
Anybody else feel this, or am I blowing smoke out my -Yoink-? Please share your thoughts!
Also, quick question: are these signature weapons addressed in Last Light at all? If so, how are they presented in that? Does it feel believable, or overly fantastical? Thanks!
So MJOLNIR is okay but Nornfang - both Norse references - isn’t? D:
I never really thought giving cool names to weapons or starships was ever really a bad thing. Most of the time they just seem to be that - cool names because they… Sounded cool
I think it makes sense. while yes the spartans ARE “Moving and grooving” you also have to remember they have been in ARMOUR and fighting for almost 30 years. And people have SEEN these spartans do their work.
Legendary weapons in MMO’s, heck in some fantasy movies, become legendary after 1 damn fight, let alone 30 years of fighting. “Tis the sword that slayed 100 men!” Done deal.
If you were a marine and you saw a spartan slap a sticker on a rifle then get 16 head shots in its 4 round magazine. You damn right you’d say it’s a legendary weapon, I would.
I wouldn’t say it’s going after the Destiny crowd at all, well at least it wasn’t created for that.
They were making Warzone very early in development and it very quickly had ideas of unique weapons. Not only that, but the Beta already had the Prophets Bane energy sword, they’ve just added more since.
I think it’s awesome and is a great way to add to Warzone, running around with Spartans customised weapons is a great idea.
I guess I’m the only person who read Halo The Fall of Reach. From what I remember Linda always had her sniper with her. Don’t recall her picking up other weapons. That was master chiefs thing. I might have to go back and skim through the book to see if the one she had then is Nornfang.

The description given in the blog post implies she stole it directly from Mirisiah Armory, don’t know if that helps or not.
I think it’s cool. It adds more variety to gameplay and gives us cool weapons. As for Last Light I haven’t finished reading it, but haven’t found any reference to the Legendary Weapons.
