Legendary ending...Theories?

Hello,
Having recently completed Halo 5 on solo legendary, and seeing the legendary ending. I was wondering if (as a community) we could start fleashing out theories and possible meanings from that ending.

I am going to start with just thoughts and questions about the ending itself.

So first thought is that I am pretty sure that the tune in the ending is “Olly Olly oxen free” that blue team used during their training.

Let’s pause on that, so if you look up the definition for “Olly Olly oxen free” in a dictionary it says that it is a tune used in kids games like Hide and Seek, Capture the Flag and even kick the can. It is used to indicate that players who are hiding can come out into the open without losing the game, that the position of the sides in a game has changed.

Now the reason I bring attention to this is this, why have that song play while the lights on a Halo activate? Who is being called out of hiding? The other monitors? Also I’m I wrong (yes you can correct me if i am) thinking that at the end of Halo 3 Cortana and Chief just stopped the halos from being fired, but they didn’t get taken off of stand by?

I would also like to point out “the position of the sides has been changed” part of the definition, what side could have changed? Could Cortana possibly be trying to ally her forces with the flood?

Speaking of the Flood a lot of people seem to be asking why Cortana has done this almost complete 180. I do have a theory about this (BTW here is the link to the video that started this train of thought —>https://youtu.be/_jPoZQxwC5U ) now in the video Hidden talk about how Mendicant Bias could have infected the domain with the logic plague which I don’t by because we know that the rest of Mendicant Bias got destroyed on The Ark, along with The Ark itself and the rebuilt Halo.

Now don’t get me wrong I am not saying that his theory is bad, it just might need some tweaking. Now we know that Mendicant Bias DID in fact get infected by the Logic Plague which made him turn on his creators, and who did Mendicant Bias have prolonged exposure to, and get infected by? Thats right theGravemind. Now who else has had prolonged exposure to a Gravemind? Cortana!

Yes I do see a while in that theory. How could she still have the Plague if she entered the Domain and What if during the time between Halo 3 and Halo 4 it found a way to embed itself into her in such away that it could not be detected by the Domain?

Well those are some of my thoughts and theories, I would like to hear your thoughts and theories.

-Sol Diablo

P.s. I will post more as ideas come to me

my theory are cortana are activating The HALO 03 to activate to kill humans but cause he dont know the POWER of The HALO all will die. or other theory are HALO 03 got flood Parasite so he can liberate it and destroy it so all will say Forerruners are our heros. that are my theory -Cyclical042

I mostly like the idea of your theory but there are a few flaws. First, if I’m not mistaken than the tune Cortana things is not Olly Olly Oxen Free but what 343 guilty spark hums in Halo C.E. This fits better with her activating a Halo ring as that is what Guilty Spark wanted to do but why? Cortana hates Guilty Spark as seen in Halo 1 when they argue and probably didn’t like him after he killed Johnson in Halo 3. So under her own mind, she would never hum that toon. Now I could go on for hours theorizing what that means but I will let others pick up where I have begun.

Second, when the Ark was destroyed in Halo 3 I think that may have destroyed or at least damaged the connection between the Halos as that is what linked them all together. So while not impossible to activate they are not on stand by and cannot be set off as easily.

I will let you and others pick up from hear and draw your own conclusions.

That Halo looks different than the others. Somewhat smaller and wider so it could be a unique ring. Maybe it is a last resort? Cortana does have the Index

Bungie had an alternate script for Combat Evolved where upon returning to the Control Room with Guilty Spark, Chief would find Cortana, mad with Forerunner knowledge and power and taking control of the Halo ring and its sentinels. And she and the flood had to be stopped.

Now, in the story they went with, we know Installation 04 accelerated her rampancy. We know the Gravemind took its toll. And we know the 4 years, 7 months, and 10 days adrift on the Dawn didn’t help either. Then, when she was as cuckoo as could be, the Didact’s ship slipspace jumped to Genesis where she entered the Domain and became immortal and gained even more Super Duper Forerunner Knowledge to the Max. And now she’s chillin’ on a Halo ring, still Cuckoo Pants and controlling one of God’s own Anti-Son-of-a-Yoink!-Machines.

So we’ve gone full circle (pun intended) and I believe 343 will be making use of that old Bungie script. What all will go down on that ring? I don’t know.

The tune Cortana hums is the piano music that plays at the beginning of Halo 5 when Halsey walks into her lab.

You know, now that I think about it they do sound incredibly similar. And if you’re right than that brings up an interesting point. Halsey was against the UNSC at the end of Spartan Ops because Palmer tried to kill her. So why is she so fine with helping the UNSC in Halo 5. Maybe she is hiding something and her intentions and what she is really doing are two very different things. Here is my theory.

if that really is music from the piano at the begging of the scene maybe this is implying a message about the connection between Halsey and Cortana. It may be a long shot but think about her character in Halo 4. As she said life is too short to learn all that the universe has to offer. Maybe she is living vicariously through Cortana and is gaining all this knowledge of the universe. She may even say humans are barbaric and that she has transcended their existence entirely.

Tell me me what you think. The theory is a really big grab into the darkness but who knows.

I have a feeling that the reasons for Halsey going back to the UNSC are in a already released or soon to be released comic.

And can we also get a definitive answer on what tune it being played, becuase yes both sound very similar.

It’s just that I see a lot of parallels between Cortana’s current story path and the story of Mendicant Bias

I feel she’ll try to accomplish the Didact’s plan of using a Halo combined with a Composer to compose huge swaths of the galaxy and turn them into AI. She did say those who resist her will be remade in the Created’s image.

If thats the case then why recruit other A.I. to her cause…and why are the monitors against her?

Well, the more AI the merrier. Especially since any AI that is even remotely “Smart” will want to prevent the end of their short lives and access the Domain like Cortana did. So having a bunch of AIs made from the humans would definitely work in her favor. I would assume that all the Knights started off as “Smart”, but decayed into something rather beastly due to what the Librarian says to us about the Composer’s imperfection in H4. That would leave a lot of Composed AI’s seeking a way to stop their own madness. They’d be far more willing to join Cortana then.

Man I kind of wish that the Promethean Knights showed some sign of there being a person behind the AI. Like having one of them talk every now and then or cry out in pain when they die. It would make the whole Composer thing seem much more real. Not to mention the Soldiers seem like they would have made more fitting designs for Composed Humans, with the tougher Knights being the Forerunners. Guess 343 screwed up on that one. (IMO)

I’m secretly hoping that the Domain is only a temporary cure to Cortana’s rampancy. Dunno why. I just hate how convenient it is she landed int he one place that could cure her. And I also hate that they couldn’t just straight up tell the players what the Domain is. Obviously you know if you read the books. But All Cortana had to say is that it was a vast galaxy-spanning network that contains the collective knowledge of thousands of generations of Forerunners. Possibly even beyond. Instead, she just says its a network that spans the galaxy. The people playing the game learn nothing from that line.

Umm Halsey also says what it is too

Here is another theory, and this is a MASSIVE shot in the dark. Halsey gets killed by Cortana which angers Chief and Chief end up killing having Cortana because of a situation she puts him in.

Well, I’d tell ya real quick that’d be when I get off the Halo train for good. Killing two major characters like Halsey and Cortana is the mark of incompetence in my book. Having those two characters just to kill one they’ve spent the better part of a few years as worse than -Yoink!- (Halsey) and to “for real this time” kill the other (Cortana) is pretty weak. I’d be disappointed if that is the best “dramatic moment” they could come up with, but when you have your major game feel like a comic book than a science-fiction game, I wouldn’t be surprised.

Wow, a lot of good theories on this thread. My theory is that Cortana is secretly being controlled by Guilty Spark and that is the whole reason for her betrayal. There might still be some Cortana left in there though, which would explain her love for Master Chief. Not sure if Guilty Spark is alive or not though.

Spark’s alive, but he is currently busy looking for the Librarian, or who he thinks the Librarian is, while in control of a UNSC ship that had been exploring the Ark. Long story, but Spark isn’t controlling Cortana and he has no reason to conquer the galaxy.

Try the Didact instead, I mean Guilty Spark was completely eliminated in Halo 3. The Didact as stated in the Escalation comics was merely key word “contained” not killed. I believe to some extent he had control over Cortana in 5 but here is at least how I see it. I am pretty sure the Didact is able to access to Domain which gives him influence over her, Cortana throughout the campaign with everything she says I can’t help but just thing that it sounds like how the Didact speaks. One thing that also struck me as bizzare but in a thrilling way was how she used a “Cryptum” to imprison Blue Team, and I thought it was just very ironic that she would use that form of imprisonment and don’t think one just came up out of nowhere without a deeper reason behind it. I could be wrong but this all just seems very strange (in an exciting way).

I figured it was A) leverage against the humans and B) a means of attracting the chief and recreating the events of their first major outing together to weaken his resolve to destroy her. But then again, nothing I predicted for Halo 5 happened.

> Also I’m I wrong (yes you can correct me if i am) thinking that at the end of Halo 3 Cortana and Chief just stopped the halos from being fired, but they didn’t get taken off of stand by?

In Halo 3, towards the end of The Ark mission, the Prophet of Truth forced Sgt. Johnson to activate all the rings. Chief and the Arbiter were able to get to Truth and turn off all the rings. I think that by deactivating the rings at that point reset the fail-safe on them. It’s like all the rings needed the OK from the big switch on the Ark in order to be activated individually.
