I notice something over the past time i play halo. The Legendary difficulty keeps changing and i want to devise a list of which halo game had the hardest legendary difficulty on my opinion and if you bother yours. In my opinion i say Halo CE and anniversary had the hardest legendary.
I don’t know, Halo 2 with it’s insta-kill snipers was pretty damn difficult
Honestly I would say that Halo: CE had probably one of the easiest legendarys. Halo 2 was probably the hardest.
Eh, I feel like either Reach or 4 had the easiest because it took me roughly the same amount of time in Heroic and Legendary on both of those
Halo 2 had a really hard legendary. Heck the marines could take more shots then the chief!
Yeah i’d definatlely say halo 2, but if your talkin solo, odst took some big balls to take down
Halo 2 definitely. That’s still the only Legendary campaign where I broke a controller in frustration. Insta-kill Snipers, Elites who run to cover so fast you can’t noob combo them and three-hit-kills are were just insane! Plus you have to note that Bungie messed up development of Halo 2 and rushed the product out the door so I think that accounts for the insanity seen in that game.
The thing about Halo 2 is that you have to accept you’re going to die. Once you’ve done that, it’s not that hard at all.
Jackal snipers: either memorize their spawns or skip them
Cairo Station hangars: noob combo. Use the M6C for headshots because the autoaim will be unreliable when there’s more than 1 Elite and the burst fire of the BR will only give you one headshot before the Elite gets to cover. With the pistol, you can conserve BR ammo (though it’s not necessary since there’s plenty of BR ammo) and pop out of cover momentarily instead of spending 5+ seconds standing out of cover for that headshot.
Flood: headshots, sword
Yeah, definitely Halo 2 and by a mile.
I agree with Halo 2 being the hardest on Legendary. Instant death by enemy snipers, I believe 5 or 6 Plasma Rifle rounds just to kill you, the damn Flood levels, just the tip of the iceberg for the Legendary runthrough of Halo 2. I ended up skipping whole sections, like the grenade jump onto the rooftops of Outskirts, then deal with the frustration. Of course, the first time I’ve beaten it on Legendary, I had no idea about these skips…
Halo solo old school . early in game when the covenate where boarding the ship through the hangers and the marines where useless. you had to fight your way through the grunts where easy but the elites where insanely tuff . I remember always running out of ammo and resorting to hand to alot.

This post speaks a lot of truth. I died in the Halo 2 campaign on Legendary probably more than any other Halo game. With that said, once I memorized all of the Jackal Sniper spawns and nailed the noob combo, it became cake. Elites became a joke, Grunts always are a joke, and those Jackal Snipers never got to live to see just how surgical I could be. It was actually really easy because the weapons were so unbalanced. You just had a steeper learning curve and not everything worked.
I would say Halo: Combat Evolved was the hardest for me. I say “hardest” in the sense of entertainment, as well. You could dispatch each area multiple different ways, the campaign managed to stack some tough odds against you, it had the most difficult level in Halo history (Truth & Reconciliation), but yet it still managed to be fun instead of frustratingly difficult. It was truly brilliant, and hard. I will admit, however, that once you realize how overpowered the Plasma Pistol is against pretty much everything, it becomes a cakewalk. Most people don’t realize that, though.

I do, and when I play the CE level Truth and Reconciliation, at the gravity lift, I first kill all of the shade users or tilt them over and slay the Covies inside the ship (spirit) with grenades. Then, I go directly to the lift when troops are dispatched and use plasma grenades, and firing either the plasma rifle or an rifle. It’s do much fun and it’s even more fun with marines or a friend. Same with the Hunters. That is my favorite moment while playing that level on legendary.
Now with Halo 2, however, I still have not completed legendary yet to this day. It’s like you have to own Halo 2, 24/7, practicing it as a religion, and training yourself to make blams! always, and have a LOT of patience.

I put a weekend into Halo 2 on Legendary and beat it. It’s frustrating, but it’s extremely predictable.
Halo 2 was the hardest for me, and also my least favorite Halo game in general. Halo 2 had the annoying habit of sending you back to a previous checkpoint if you died too many times. There was one part on High Charity where you were dropping down a grav lift and there were a bunch of Brutes, Jackals and Grunts shooting you before you could land. You had to double headshot the Brutes with the Carbine or Battle Rifle before you hit the ground to stand a chance. I’ll also never forget what a pain Tartarus was. Truthfully, I ran back through Halo 2 a couple years ago and it wasn’t as bad as I remembered. It’s possible that the newer Halo games are as hard but we’re just used to it. I did have a tough time with Halo 4, but I admit I was coming back from a bit of a video game hiatus.
I always start Halo games on Legendary and if my subjective memory serves me, my difficulty rankings fall something like this:
- Halo 2
- Halo 4
- Halo
- Halo: Reach
- Halo 3: ODST
- Halo 3
Halo CE on the PC.
Here’s my difficulty ranking (I’ve only played ODST on heroic)
hardest=1
Easiest=5
- Halo 2
- Halo CE
- Halo Reach
- Halo 4
- Halo 3
I thought halo 2 was the hardest halo 2 is the only game I haven’t done on legandary.
hmm the hardest campaign IMO is probably halo 2 or halo ce. The easiest was halo 4

Why thanks! Indeed, it was incredibly one sided. Yep, not to mention the vast reserves of ammo.
Also, sticking Mythic Elites in Halo 2, if it doesn’t kill them, will either make them drop their guns for a sword or make them abandon the use of their guns. Really handy.

Fun. That’s the difference between Halo 2 and CE IMO.
A subtle reason why Halo 2 is perceived as difficult is because the enemies fire at your last known position long after you’ve gone into cover so you’re forced to stay out of combat (letting their shields recharge or change positions) or engage them from another location.
As a result, combat turns into a waiting game. If you’re patient, you can get through just about anything.
