I just finished the campaign on Legendary yesterday, and I was pleasantly surprised by it. Not only did it not feel like a massive exercise in frustration (like Reach), but it was actually fun and challenging.
I must confess that I “cheated” a little by consulting a series of speed run videos, but even so, I feel that I could have fought my way through most of the battles I skipped without too much hassle. Also, a certain “shortcut” in a certain mission helped immensely.
All in all, I’d say it was a good experience. A couple gripes, though:
- The aim assists need an option to be turned off. Many times, I found either:
- The bullets themselves were visibly not going where I was pointing (with the Mantis, in particular)
- The reticle would move on its own as enemies would run by, due to the “sticky reticle” feature.
- The bullet magnetism for the precision weapons (particularly the DMR) is way too strong. I can’t count how many times I’d line up a perfect head shot on a stationary Crawler, only to pull the trigger and watch it flinch from a body shot. But then later I’d take a sloppy shot on a moving Crawler with the reticle definitely away from the head, and the thing explodes.
This is actually the same problem Reach had, particularly in the MP. If you wanted a head shot, you had to aim just outside the head, otherwise it had a high chance of being a body shot.
All I want is an option to turn that stuff off… and one to “mute all players” in the audio settings. I don’t think that’s too much to ask.
