Laughter and Performance

I’ve noticed a trend in my recent games and I was wondering what everyone else’s thoughts are on this subject.

It seems that whenever we have a big chatty group, we play better. Now I’m not talking about a big group giving MLG callouts etc. But if there’s guys just joking, roasting each other, making fun of the enemy, etc., you sorta go into auto pilot, or semi black out. Next thing you know, you look at the scoreboard and it’s a blowout and you’re like 20-5 and you don’t even remember doing anything because your conscious mind was more focused on the stories and jokes being discussed in the party.

Does this ever happen to you?

I can’t talk and play at the same time. Its too distracting.

Are you doing better with your team mates, when they are being chatty? If you are, then congratulations, you are one of the few who get what video games are about, which is having some good fun with your friends, not being sweaty and competitive.

Not normally but when it does I’m usually drunk ;D

When I play with my teammates we usually talk and laugh about random things and still win our games.

I don’t seem to do better but I do go on the autopilot mode that you mentioned.

Well, it makes it much more enjoyable, that’s for sure. I’m usually more responsive when I’m distracted for whatever reason so yeah, sometimes this is the case. Joking around makes the game feel a bit easier if you’re able to do well while having fun, you feel more confident that way and worry less.

I have certainly noticed this multiple times! I was in a group a few days ago and we were just joking around like idiots saying “bro” repeatedly for no reason. Looked up and we’re flat out destroying the other team. No call outs or anything. I think it’s just because you relax more.

I think the part your brain that worries, overthinks, or spazes out focuses on the banter, and your subconscious skills and reactions take over. Like how sometimes you’re driving home and next thing you know you’re pulling into the driveway and you were completely lost in thought not even thinking about driving. But yet, you DID stop at the red lights, you DID take the right turns, and you DID yield to that pedestrian. But you were using a different part of your brain for all that.

i play WAY worse when im playing with a full team of my friends

I have those moments too.

Same here; the objectives are to clear to even put a head set on; we all know what we need to do to win; I mute players; because I want to escape in the game not hear what someone had for dinner

I tend to do far better when I’m not trying to win or consciously play really well. So I definitely do far better when I’m chatting with my mates than when I’m not. For me I think it has to do with the fact that I tend to get way too frustrated when I die if I’m too focused on the game. (yeah, I’m not a very mature adult…) And once I start getting frustrated I just don’t play as well, and I make stupid choices on where to go and when to rush/hang back and all that jazz. When I’m just on to have fun with my friends, my performance improves. It could also simply be that even if we are joking around we still call things out and watch each other’s backs. Even when it’s done minimally, teamwork makes a huge difference.

well being chatty and familiar with the people you’re playing with means you’re more able to fight as a team. Something a team of randoms dont have so you do have at the very least a physiological advantage over the other team. Enough teamwork can over come a superior skilled team so it’s not hard for me to believe you win a lot with friends.

I don’t know if my performance improves much but when with friends we win more games and have more fun.

Completely true and we even get pretty good rankings while we do it. I honestly have no idea for any callouts except for power weapons and where i died, but with a team just talking complete crap all game, we can still do well and have fun. I played a game of slayer where somone said i didnt deserve the rank i have, because im onyx and he beat me while being ranked silver. I told him to not take the game so seriously, and he told me i should quit.

Lol, that must have been fun for you.

If you’re in an organised team and you all have headsets you are going to beat four randoms every time, and winnings kinda fun isn’t it?
