Latency - hidden cause of Halo's popularity loss

So we know that the reason there isn’t server selection is because with the lower population of this game, search times would go way up. Ironically this has created a snowball effect in many regions. Those lower population regions, (both foreign and in the US) have to play with higher ping and therefore the audience dies out quicker. The ratio of the populations becomes even more skewed leading to less hope for lower population regions to play on local servers.

The game is all but dead in many regions because of the ping issues. If 343 was in touch with the community, they would see that many people stopped playing Halo because they thought the aiming was broken or something about the new controls didn’t translate for old Halo players. A lot of people retired from this game thinking that they need old school Halo to be good again. The truth is that the aiming and lack of success for many has been due to high latency. Since high latency isn’t obvious to the average gamer, they’ve identified the wrong problems with this game. They quit on Halo because they couldn’t adapt…to the high latency.

When I visit my parents who live in Chicago, it feels like I’m playing on lan on their slower internet. I think it gives me an unusual perspective the difference in ping makes. That difference makes me go from high Gold to Diamond. I know there are many others in other countries who experience far worse latency than me so I can imagine their frustration.

When Halo 6 launches, it’s vital that there’s server selection on Day 1. It’s the only way the new core gameplay gets a fair assessment. If the gameplay is going to have such a large skill-gap, there cannot be such large discrepancies in latency to go with it.

So very true.

this all seems like a really big opinion, unless of course you have a source?

Agree. It’s taken me a while to realize the reason i can go 17-5 and the next match go 7-13. It’s strange how the connection quality changes so much from one match to the next.

I still can’t wrap my head around the fact 7 month’s after release, you can’t view reqs flawlessly. Issues in game i can take, issues in the menus should be very rare. I played black ops 3 for a while before halo 5 and never had a problem in the menus. If you don’t make the game run smooth for players they’ll naturally look elsewhere.

I couldn’t agree more!!

I do think their server issues really hurt the population as well.

Op you hit it man… I totally agree with everything you said there… And how very true…

Kmart servers, impotent netcode and bullet sponges, oh my…
