Latency Help

What is the best way to decrease latency?

It seems no matter what I do, my gameplay runs just barely behind others to the point that it is noticeable. I’m sure you know what I’m talking about. Getting shot before you round a corner, or even when I’m spamming the magnum, sometimes I can’t get off three shots before they can do five. Not terrible, but just enough to throw off the game. One time I literally shot someone with the full 12 rounds of the magnum, got a hit marker for each one, and they simply turned and proceed in a cheeky five shot. There is just a noticeable delay between the controller input and the the action on the monitor.

Now, I know about how laggy some people say the game can be and about heavy aim, but there has to be a way around it. Do people just get used to the lag and learn to play with it? It seems unlikely because the lag actually causes shots not to register and things of that nature. Things that wouldn’t fly on a competitive level. My Xbox consistently runs:

Download: 250ish
Upload: 15ish
Latency: 40-50ms

Is this all in my head? I know that ping is really the most important statistic, so their has to be a network or hardware change that I can make to get it down.

What did you do to help with lag or am I just screwed? Could it be that I am too far from the dedicated servers? I live in Missouri. Can anyone from around Missouri help a brother out?

It may be your TV/monitor. Input lag is huge. Get a gaming monitor with a fast response time and at least 120 HZ with freesync. Also plug your controller into the system. Make sure all of your connections are tight (internet and system). Elite controller is golden.

EDIT: Also, adjust the trigger sensitivity.

Maybe it is just me. I have a Benq Monitor and a wireless controller.

I know what you’re talking about. It seems to happen most in maps that have a lot of lag in general. I also see it happen a lot in infection, where I melee, it makes the sound and everything, but nothing happens and I get killed.

Are you hardwired to the router, and refresh/reboot the internet ? Input lag on your monitor’s model a decent rating? Any other issues with games to note , or system UI lag/crashes? Instant on or power saving mode selected for your xbox one? Wired controller would help as well.

Sometimes little things like that can make just enough of a difference to feel an improvement. Aside from that…the game DEFINITELY has heavy aim sometimes. I use the focus search preference and even still get matches with heavy aim at times. My latency also sucks sometimes and usually refreshing the internet brings it to what is considered decent latency.

It could all just be server side man. It’s hard to tell sometimes…but the games not super populated for sure.

I’m doing everything from above. I’ve switched between instant on and powersaving and haven’t noticed a difference.

I am using the original Xbox One from 5 years ago so that could be it also.

I run balanced but I need to do focused more it just takes forever to rank up because it puts you with people around your skill level whereas you rank faster if you beat players above your skill level but I’m all for improved gameplay instead.

Thanks for the input. It may just be heavy aim. Some games I’m 19-5 and then I’ll go 1-12 the next.

For me I rank up slow if I play without a team because the game throws such lobsided matches. Alone i play against even champs and I’m not a champ. That’s while searching on focus. If I play with 2 people that are daimonds we get almost always 3 daimonds and 1 highish plat. If I play quick play I sit back and laugh at the stupidity of the match making.

I’m using the limited edition halo 5 xbox. I think it’s also old as well. My brother has my OG xbox day 1 xbox one. It still works, idk if there is any networking issues specific to either of them. It is also hardlined…but one of us does often end up having to just completely power cycle and unplug our xbox because we experience UI problems, xbox live randomly saying we don’t have xbox live, Mic problems, connectivity problems when we’re in the same freaking apartment, etc.

I experience heavy aim and all that comes with it. It really upsets me sometimes man that’s why I try to not play alone because having another person chills me out. It goes like this.

Match 1 - I feel like my shot is garbage. Can’t aim for crap while it feels like enemies can. I struggle to do well. Winning still happens sometimes. I still get kills and all.

Match 2 - shots are on point. I’m on fire. My accuracy was over 60% …hey…there was an onyx on the other team and he did the worse? Hmm…i guess that’s just halo 5 for you?

Match 3 - I swear that was a 5 shot…how is this dude not dead man? I know I’m hitting him…wth is wrong with my reficle it seems to sometimes feel inconsistent. Bam bam bam pop bam…wth!! Dude die already thats a 5 shot again…come on game! Holy crap…dude legit threw 3 nadez at me at once! How the hell!? Why did the game show the same dude go up the same lift twice? The heck?

Match 3 finishes. I have the highest accuracy. I know those shots were landing, yet the enemies didn’t take damage each shot.

Match 4- damn. It’s 20 to 5 in slayer…I can’t survive at all this match. These guys are for sure just better. Nothing feels wrong, they’re just clearly far better…and it’s part of the ridiculous match making…it’s experienced daily. 3 champs and an onyx vs daimonds. Thanks halo 5. I’m sure they absolutely needed that win.

So sometimes it’s us, sometimes it’s the game. In another thread over this kinda topic I brought up that even dudes like h5 pros bring this up in 2020. Snakebite does YouTube vids and he experienced heavy aim in one of his vids, talked about it in another, and explained why his team mate lethul was upset with the tournament being on console and didn’t end up joining due to that. He knows the games plagued with stuff like heavy aim randomly happening. The vid was uploaded just this past week if I’m not mistaken.
