Anyone else feel like last seasons ranking was messed up? When I played Slayer, I got ranked silver 6 while my friend I played all my games with got near diamond. Huh? I had a KDA of a positive 8 or so last season in slayer because I was playing against people I’m way better than. I also got a poor rank in swat, at plat 3 or so, and I had to climb up to diamond 4 then I just stopped playing and waited for a new season. Meanwhile this season I completed my placements and got Onyx 1524 in Swat right off the bat… probably could have gotten a bit higher but I was playing with a friend who only got platinum 6 (he’s good but not super good) so when we had 3 or so matches against champions we were a bit out of luck, but I don’t think I did too bad those games.
The point is, anyone feel like last season was messed up? Keep in mind I didn’t play halo at all while waiting for this next season to start, so it’s not like I just trained for hours and suddenly I’m much better at swat than I used to be.
You and your friend doing placement matches together and not getting the same rank is not that strange bacause it takes into account which rank you had last season, so you and you friend probably had quite different rank last season.
You placing onyx after a break could be that you actually got better bacause of the brake or that you where really lucky with the placement matches.
I was essentially placed in a whole tier lower last season and had to grind back up to diamond/onyx. This season, I’ve placed in diamond/onyx per usual. 2 seasons ago I was placing in Diamond/Onyx. So, last season was the only oddball one, placing me, almost entirely, in low plat.

My friend is new to Halo somewhat, I’m not. I wasn’t lucky I don’t think, you can check my match history; I don’t think I got ‘lucky’ by beating onyx’s and putting up a good fight against champions. Not trying to brag or anything, but I don’t think luck is a factor in whether you beat the top players in the game or not.

What I meant by luck was that the ones you met may have been tired, distracted or similar. I have repeatedly beaten champions when I was low onyx because I was hyped, concentrated and so on and low onyx have beaten me when I was a champion.
So if you are lucky and place with onyx that are tired, not concentrated or maybe they shouldn’t be onyx at all, then it may explain it.
Last season, 343 made the ranks more strict because they felt the # of onyx players was too high. Seems like they backtracked on that this season. I can’t remember the specifics, but it was mentioned in one of the weekly matchmaking updates.
