This is my first post.
Long story short, I care a whole lot about Halo and its LAN play.
I host LANs as often as I can (not often enough) with 3 kids, etc.
Anyways, I am very concerned about the announced LAN feature for the Master Chief Collection. I am okay with it requiring an online connection to some degree.
However, what is alarming, is what happens when the dedicated servers are shutdown? Will LAN play ever be disabled because of this?
I do not want my $60 dollar game becoming a drink coaster if I cannot play via LAN in the next 5-10 years, etc.
So, 343, can you please clarify this?
Will LAN play ever be killed as a result of your actions, etc?
I want to be able to enjoy this game(s) via LAN forever!
Does this concern anyone else?
Please reply and sound off.
I don’t have an Xbox One yet, but from what I understand with games that use dedicated servers, there’s always the option to play LAN one way or another. I should hope that they keep the ability to play LAN though, it would be a real shame if our games became unusable once the console is no longer supported.
What’s wrong about asking a question like this on a forum filled with Halo fans instead of Googling it? It takes the OP the same amount of time, and instead of just keeping the answer to himself, it gives others a chance to see the question and answer as well.
They’re probably not ever going to go down, especially not within the next 20 years. Besides, LAN is pretty old school, like splitscreen, so I don’t expect continued support for it since they are pushing everything to be online.
Are you really going to be playing or doing LANs on the Master Chief Collection in 15 years? That’s probably the minimum time that they’d consider shutting down the Xbox One servers.
I just do not want to be told when I can access a feature of a game.
I understand the reasoning for shutting down the old Xbox Live/Halo 2 experience. However, we can all still enjoy Halo 2’s multiplayer via LAN.
I want to be able to enjoy the Master Chief Collection via LAN for as long as I want. If LAN play was somehow disabled later on, then it would basically render the multiplayer component useless…
The reason for my post was not to vent or to see if LAN play was still relevant (It is relevant to me, that is enough).
The purpose of my post was to see if 343 or somebody could assure us that LAN play for the Master Chief Collection will not be, “killed off,” later on.
I need assurance before I buy an XBOX ONE, etc.
Otherwise, I will continue to play Halo 1 & 2 via LAN play.
Until that question is answered, does anyone want to share their best LAN memories? What kind of setup was used, etc?
It is odd that 343 is being silent on this issue.
You cannot just dangle this appetizing bone in front of us and then take it away suddenly from us 10 years later.
I mean, 343 could do that, but that would just be downright cruel.
Does anyone know of a way to get this questioned answered?
I feel like the majority of the Halo community does not even know that this is an impending issue that could be detrimental to their multiplayer experience (via LAN)later down the road.
Hopefully, somebody from 343 will see this post and take action in order to provide an answer.
I just cannot be excited anymore about this collection until we know for sure what the futre holds for LAN play…
If the dedicated servers are required for LANs to operate, then it can no longer be called “LAN”. The fact that you have to sign in to Xbox Live in the first place already makes it questionable.
The ‘L’ in LAN stands for “local”. as in, comprised of devices on your local network. I personally don’t agree with still calling it LAN play if you have to first check in with a system outside of your local network. However, and this is pure speculation on my part, they are probably calling it LAN because you only have to check in with Xbox Live at the start and everything then runs locally for the rest of your session. If that weren’t the case, then there would be absolutely no justification in calling it “LAN”.
While I don’t have an answer to your question, I can say that if it is truly LAN play, it would not rely on these dedicated servers and you would have nothing to worry about. If it’s not really LAN play and is just a lazy workaround using Xbox Live custom matches that they’ve relabeled for some reason as LAN, then all bets are off.

I’m glad someone else has similar concerns. Here is one of my posts regarding this very thing.
> I was confused, weren’t the tournaments all on LAN? LAN never used internet connection (does now), so is this why we had blackscreens appear?
It was lan, but they got around the xbox live thing by hooking up another laptop and having it imitating xbox live. atleast thats what basically was said to be done at gamescom.
Its stupid that you have to connect to xbox live to be able to even start lan play and you think MS would learn by now, but guess this is still a carryover from that craziness at launch

Hmm, yeah must be apart of that early craziness. It’s so simple to implement LAN how it was before. I can’t get around the whole internet ping requirement. Oh well…
It raises fundamental issues. Can I play ANY of the MCC if I’m not connected to the Internet? Also, what if Xbox Live or the servers go down for whatever reason (very common). Can I play/use campaign? Forge? Spartan Ops? Theater? Local customs?

That’s something I hadn’t considered. Now that you’ve pointed that out, it’s something I’m concerned about. My internet goes out about once a month and stays out until I can give Comcast some money. It would be disappointing if I can’t even work toward campaign progress or achievements during those times.
