So, lag happens, guess there’s a limited amount the devs can do about it at this point, but one big issue I have is that it disadvantages one team over the other- why not simply pause the game for both players if there’s lag like it did in halo wars 1?

Because that would ruin the game for the other
3 or 5 player’s, constantly pausing the game or just pausing it forever if they DC.
This was a common problem in HW1 and it was the worst solution to player’s with lag, no need to ruin the game for everyone because of 1 player’s misfortune.
Unfortunately, if the game stops for one lagging player, it could cause cascading disconnects which was not uncommon in the first halo wars. It does suck, especially in team games, but it can’t be helped.
If only AI replacements was possible for this game.
When your entire pop gets killed by an invisible glassing beam
The invisible glassing beam is to account for the VFX memory budget going over what is available to it during a match while not causing it to crash. That’s not lag.

This choice was made for many reasons. All of which I can’t explain. But - they were done for important reasons.
