Sorry if this has been posted a million times but I’m doing my best not to get too upset. Is anyone else having some major lag issues? Before you get all high and mighty I have a 30mb down and 6mb up broadband speed. The Join-In-Progress guarantees that you’ll end up getting a bad host (happened most of the time for me). Luckily I haven’t jumped into many games via JIP though.
Another thing are the Kill Cams. It’s a great idea but I still haven’t seen a 100% accurate Kill Cam. Shots are two to three inches to the right or left and most of the time there won’t even be a final kill cam.
Overall the lag today has been horrendous and I really hope it is fixed soon.
Glad I’m not the only one. The killcams are HORRIBLE. Almost every single time I’ve had cams showing my death was caused by a shooter aiming way off to one side of my position - which lag or not is incredibly frustrating and just makes play feel terribly unjust. We’re talking literally inches of screen space here: the reticule very rarely actually coming down on me when I’m shown being dropped by the enemy. 343i, we are not talking negligible little lag perception here; the effect is hugely pronounced and self defeating.
On a related but different note, why doesn’t the killcam show your opponent’s health? Why can’t we see how close we were to killing them - as seen in the likes of CoD and BF3 - the games you borrowed from for this very mechanic?
In the current state the killcam makes death worse than it ever was in a Halo game, not more “helpful”. It’s counterproductive. I feel robbed, not beaten.
I am really surprised not a lot of people are saying much about the kill cams because it was one of the things I was looking forward to. This and the lag issues are the very reason we need a public beta, to work out the kinks. Yes the release hasn’t been too bad, but the lag is growing increasingly and the party system is a little underwhelming.

No, as a public beta would not sort this problem out, look at any CoD game with kill cam on XBL it has the same problem. What would sort the problem out is for Halo: 4 to be using dedicated servers, this would also sort out any latency issues you are having, the problem is not with your connection but the hosts.
See, that’s the danger - that 343i, like you, perceives our problems to be in line with the slight lag perception inherently part of killcams - as it is in CoD and to a much lesser extent, BF3.
Mine and the OP’s problems are very different to that. The killcams are COMPLETELY inaccurate. They are nothing but bad representations of what actually happened. The reticule isn’t just a little bit off, or a few millimeters to the side of the target, no: the reticule is MASSIVELY off target; when the rounds are apparently landing.
The killcam, as is, is completely ineffective and redundant. Breeds contempt…
Same for me, killcam shows someone shoot miles away from me and then me drop dead. I assume it’s lag but I run on fibre optic connection that’s amazing for any other game/internet need (insert pronz joke). It’s annoying as it makes you feel hard done by.

No, they are not they are a direct result of packet loss/lag. This was the same in Halo: 3 and Reach, why do you think in theatre you cannot see what anyone else is seeing in first person, because it would be very inaccurate and laggy, on occasion in theatre mode the game would glitch and you could see what the enemy sees in first person, and guess what it looks like the kill cam on this game, laggy and inaccurate. These inaccuracies come from a direct result of latency issues, the data being sent has been interrupted or the host’s connection has completely discounted your shot, there are also discrepancies in the location of you player, this was the same in Halo: Reach as I would get shot through a wall a lot, here is a link to my file share on Reach where I get shot through a wall.
Sigh, when I said our problems are different I wasn’t implying that it has nothing to do with lag and packet loss.
I went out of my way to describe how much more WORSE the impression of lag/inaccurate aiming in Halo 4 is compared to the likes of Call of Duty - a game which already has poor performing killcams, if memory serves. There the effect is small but discernable - the player can see the perceived inaccuracies of the enemies aim. In Halo 4 however the perception of bad aiming is HUGE. The reticule isn’t even remotely hovering over the target’s position on the screen, let alone the actual player avatar itself. That’s the difference.
Please don’t confuse the two, it’s important that you listen to our points properly if you’re going to attempt to offer answers. It’s not helpful.
But long story short: if the Halo engine and it’s net code can’t handle killcams properly then remove them entirely. Don’t make the player feel any more punished than they already might have done purely out of a false necessity to conform. It’s bad design and cheap.

Maybe you should understand that every game is different and uses different code, which will have drastic effects on how certain elements work. It has every thing to do with lag, maybe instead of complaining you should be looking up things like net code, interpolation etc. to try and understand why it is inaccurate.
The join in progress is a joke which looks to have back-fired in a game which historically promotes team work and “seeing a match out”
That’s because people quit faster than ever before - safe in the knowledge that it’s no bother at all to quickly jump into another game. Yesterday when playing slayer with my brother the vast majority of matches we had someone quit or just an empty slot from start to finish. Sometimes it felt like the game just didn’t want us to have a full team of four.
That’s just FOUR. It couldn’t even sustain that. Oh dear.
This online experience is terrible (I have played about 150 matches now). Matches are like night and day from each other depending on who is hosting. This is 10 steps back from where Halo Reach was. You can instantly tell if you are host, or have a good connection to the host. I have emptied entire clips of a Needler into someones back without even taking off their shield. They should just throw the Halo Reach net code in and pretend like the current code never happened. I like this game but the match making is killing it for me!
to make things worse im an Australian and i keep getting put on US hosts, its completely outrageous the difference between halo reach and halo 4 latency

I don’t even look at the kill cam but the lag is becoming an issue. In some rooms I’ll have A 3 SHOT ADVANTAGE on someone (DMR or BR), then suddenly not a single shot connects and I die. It isn’t my accuracy, I’m not the kind of guy that misses 7 shos in a row after connecting perfectly on the first three. Sometimes a team mate will deshield someone and once again I goet all head shots and end up with an assist. I would say about 30% of my assists were supposed to be kills but the lag made it impossible to connect a headshot.

The lag is so bad sometimes I don’t even get credit for an assist on someone i put 3 or 4 shots into… It’s been getting worse too. The first night I didn’t notice it, but last night it was extremely noticeable. There was a few games where I was definitely host and it was like I was playing a different game, I could shoot people about half as many times and they would die. Like I said earlier in this topic, matches are like night and day depending on your connection to the host. I never experienced this in Reach at all either, put the Reach net code in 343!
As for the killcams showing people not shooting you, that is lag. Alot of my kill cams have show people looking straight up in the air while shooting the sky and killing me. It doesnt mean they werent looking at me and shooting me, but that the killcams are broken. So youre not getting cheated by the game and killed, you are just getting -Yoink- lag filled kill cams and wont get to see how the person was actually aiming.
you would not believe how many times ive been shot behind a wall or been shot behind cover and been headshotted because the game thinks im still standing.
hell just today i got shot behind a -Yoinking!- mountain by a sniper and i have no idea how the hell it happened because of no killcam
