Lag Compensation is Broken! No Legitimacy.

I am so glad to have never bought this game! Why does this community keep playing online if nothing is legit, whether or not you experience and see the broken lag compensation? Stop the insanity.

I am not going to spend much time posting an elaborate topic about this, but the lag compensation in war games is obviously severely broken to anyone who knows how to see it. So much that i am very glad to have rented this game first. I will not be supporting any more of these broken multiplayer games of recent with increasingly worse lag compensation. Why play a competitive multiplayer game where nothing is legit and good connections are put at the disadvantage?

For those unaware of ‘lag compensation’, it’s essentially written into a game’s netcode in the attempt to hide latency. This is why everything appears smooth and without delay. But what you see is quite frequently not reality by any means to someone who experiences the disadvantage side of things.

Basically, you are seeing things with a delay, or of the past. While laggy players are not. Putting you at a disadvantage. This leads to experiencing many of lag compensations drawbacks such as; you are the first to shoot an enemy [accurately] and then die, are killed after taking the safety of cover in the environment, need to shoot far more then enough ammunition to kill an enemy, get killed in less shots then required, both killed at the same time despite clearly doing something like a melee first, very frequent assists, everyone having virtually even kill/death ratios on the scoreboards, etc. And killcams will even display this. They are not broken. You are just viewing the same events that had taken place as you died but from their camera view. The problem is you are seeing things with a delay, or of the past because of lag compensation. So for instance, if they are shooting behind you, that’s because they actually were shooting you before that when you where once there. You will also notice players who give you the most issues are from mexico and/or more then not the ones with very little years of xbox live and low gamerscore, in other words casual or noobie players with poor internet. I am thinking killcams are not displayed at all in big team infinity slayer because it would be so much more noticeable from the increased demand on the netcode.

Sadly, developers are not open about it and do everything from deceive or lie in the attempt to keep this very real problem from being widely known. It’s my opinion developers/publishers either don’t care about the netcode quality, are incompetent, or have been dialing up lag compensation to cater to poor internet connections in sake of more profits.

Many players believe this is all caused by traditional latency or something else such as the hitboxes. But it’s not. And many believe it will be fixed but it won’t. No game ever fixes it.

And no it’s not my connection! How do i know this? My connection(s) have always tested fine. And i have experienced this lag compensation garbage using 3 different isp’s; in 2 different countries; 3 different cities; using 3 different consoles; all using different network hardware, and using multiple internet bandwidth speeds from 1mbps download and 256kbps upload, to 50mbps download and 3mbps upload.

So ya, there is no legitimacy in this game. And unfortunately many do not even see it when they do indeed experience the garbage it creates.

EDIT:
To end some confusion; to my best knowledge, it’s definitely a per connection, per game basis, if you experience the disadvantage side of things because of lag compensation. It must be cranked to a varying degree with each game. This also explains why nerfing your connection can work in one game and not in another.

And do remember there are players getting the disadvantage side of things and those who are not. This does not mean there is not a problem for the vast majority of others. And even if you do not experience anything; you should really be bothered with the fact there is no legitimacy in combat.

It’s total garbage to have the enemy react to you, turn, aim, and begin to shoot numinous shots before you even see it and the result. Period.

It would be in 343 Industries best interest to respond promptly and truthfully, before they start losing faithful customers!

lag compensation has always been around but its not noticeable unless you keep getting put on offshore hosts

I experience this garbage with the host always being within the same region (not offshore). And it is that bad for myself personally.

iv been experience this pretty much every game i play, on release day it was working fine, now i unload a whole clip using a battle rifle he doesn’t die and he touches me 3-4 times im dead ? watch the kill cam he is not even aiming at me ?

been playing FPS games for awhile so ain’t no noob either. to be honest i thought gears of war 3 was bad with the bullet sponging, but this tops it over it, id rather play gow3 then this, it really sad to see this, i spend $130 just to experience this ?

This is the most noticable in flood, if anybody has no idea what OP was talking about.

i started to worry if it was my internet connection, but i decided to play cod bo and i haven’t touch that game for awhile, played 2 matches and was owning it, no lag and when i died i died fair, not where i unload whole clip and he taps me im dead like halo 4, so theres defiantly something wrong with the halo 4 servers. im suprised also that not much people are complaining about it.

> I don’t think it’s as bad as you’re putting it. You seem to be talking about MW3. H4’s Lag Comp isn’t so bad, I don’t know why they had to change literally everything, if it’s not broken don’t fix it but apparently, they need to “fix everything” don’t they?

it’s pretty bad. you 9 shot someone with a dmr in the head, then they turn sneeze and you die, then 2 seconds after they die. you know its lag comp because it says you killed them.

another good example is hitting a spot on snipe and they run another four steps and have a heart attack and then your medal pops.

That first post was extremely illuminating thank you, it explained so much about what was going on and what I was experiencing.

I know this linked video is about MW3 but from 6:08 the guy explains the lag compensation effect really well and might be of some help to other people trying to wrap their heads around what’s going on in H4.

modern warfare 3 had the lag compensation pretty bad, but the fix to that was to lower your internet speed down, well thats what i use to do and worked great, but when i did it for halo 4 nothing seemed to work at all. -_-

funny thing is i noticed is when i play against united states people since im in Australia i seem to play without that much lag compensation but see some lag here and there, but i tend to play better, weather lag compensation is working to my favor or not, but seriously when i play against my same region i some how get the biggest lag compensation i ever seen. even when people get host they give it to people with a red bar connection ? even migrates like 3-4 times during one match ?

big let down, i don’t see why they don’t make dedicated servers? i played on them on different games they tend to be alot better then hosts servers.

sad to see this really am, so hyped for halo 4 and really like what they did to it but the lag compensation is beyond playable, i sometimes feel like i regret buying the game.

Well apparently if you have a good connection you get penalized for it regardless of where you are in the world in relation to everyone else.

Dedicated servers are definitely the best solution but sadly they cost companies money and these days companies don’t want to spend more than they absolutely have to. Sadly it’s a case of: they’ve got our money - job done.

MW3 was a broken mess when it was released and remains so today. Just an endless series of being shot in the face by people running out in front of me before I even see them run out in front of me.

I’ve had no such problems with Halo 4. Even less lag than on BF3s’ dedicated servers.

And yet tons of people are experiencing problems so good for you but a lot of other people are getting screwed.

cost money for dedicated, but as big halo is they can’t get dedicated servers is beyond me.

well iv packed my halo 4 away until i hear an update or some sort of fix i cannot play this game, might actually test with my friends as custom and ill host a game and report back how that goes.

Good to know I’m not the only one. I have had all these and it makes the game no fun when I die because of these issues. I really hope this problem is addressed and fix because I won’t be playing much longer if it continues.

I have experienced pretty much everything you have said. I hate getting safely behind cover then dying 2 seconds later through the wall, and then on top of that it usually doesn’t even show me the kill cam for whatever reason?

The match making and connections in this game are some of the worst I have seen. It’s like night and day between matches depending on who is host, very inconsistent and annoying. The game is a lot of fun, but the lag issues are really ruining it for me.

Also, Gears of War 3 has dedicated servers so why can’t Halo?

same thing happening to me. I’ll be behind cover and then all the sudden i’m teleported to the middle of the map in the open and then die instantly…cant stand this.

Oh so it is gone? I just thought I couldnt find the option…I really love getting matched against an entire team composed of people from all over the UK when im in the U.S. NOT

Hmmm…now I feel guilty for my crappy 512kbps internet…but I make up for it w/ my crappy K/D ratio, right?
