Lack of aim assist in Infinite

I got used to the aiming during the Flights so it’s fine for me.
The default controller settings aren’t great though.

For me personally I turned all deadzones down to zero and set the aim acceleration to max so that the sticks feel responsive. I then just turned up the sensitivity a little so it’s at 7.

The aim assist still feels low but at least the sticks feel smooth and responsive with these settings. Eventually it feels quite rewarding to play without the heavy aim assist of old Halo games but it’s definitely a learning curve and I get why some are finding it frustrating.

At the very least they should tweak the default controller options and the default ones felt very off to me.

That’s what I’ve experienced. I recommend loading up a custom game or something so you can just check what looking around does with 1 accel vs 5 accel.
There sadly is no way to make the deadzone in a way that you can never reach the acceleration point though.
There’s control settings that make it “better” but there’s not a single setting that makes it good.

I honestly don’t know what people are on about. I do pretty well with controller (on PC) and also notice that there is aim assist for at least close to medium range.

So many posts in here asking to cater to the casual controller player and boost aim assist. You forget about the casual mkb player who you already outshine. You are already at a huge advantage with controller which practically does all the tracking for you.

I practice my aim daily with mkb and have not touched a controller in over 6 years. Having tried controller today, I think it’s silly that without any practice my controller accuracy percentage and kdr is higher than that of mkb.

Look at all games that have released with crossplay and you see nothing but controller players dominating the ranks. Yet, here you all come whining and complaining just like you always do.

“I don’t have the problem so there is no problem”
Yeah good for you. We don’t have the advantage “that does all the tracking for us” which is why this topic exists.
But nice that it works for you and great contribution to the topic.

The issue is how wonky it can feel at times, it’s as if the aim assist can suddenly drop with some weapons and it becomes frustrating to keep your aim on people in a gunfight

And that is why it would be another reason for the game to once again lose a high amount of its population, like 5 did. Taking input exclusively from pro players is a bad thing, you can never casually play Arena in that game

I’m on MKB and the aim assist seems to be missing compared to other titles.

I’m down for an aim assist and magnetism nerf for precision weapons for skill gap and sandbox reasons, but currently it feels way too harsh on low and mid tier weapons like the BR, Sidekick, Commando, Disrupter, and Mangler.

Many of the people replying that it isn’t a problem and we’re just bad players have 0 hours in MCC. Interesting

In a high TTK game like Halo where landing consistent shots, in lieu of flick shots, the advantage actually goes to controller because of the player magnetism that is afforded to controller and not M&K.

I agree that M&K would typically be the go to for most FPS games; however, this is not the case for Halo. High TTK = controller advantage; Low TTK = M&K advantage.

Then what I encountered doesn’t make sense because me shooting first with accurate headshots should not be going down that fast. I have mostly noticed this behaviour in ranked while less common in social. I’m not convinced that a PC user doesn’t have the advantage when there dealing more damage at the same rage with less shots when as far as I can tell with equal or less accuracy than my own. That just doesn’t make sense since when I played ranked earlier it either felt like M/K gamers had the advantage or the opposing team were cheating. :pensive:

The aim assist issue is most obvious when tracking a strafing enemy. My solution has been to land 3-5 shots with the pistol, and then spray with the AR. Trying to (reliably) land the last few shots with the pistol on an aware enemy at mid range is almost impossible on controller.

I just don’t understand why 343i would nerf controller input for the flagship franchise that is supposed to sell consoles.

Its wanting to play the same game we’ve all played our whole lives and not have to switch input devices just to play the game lmao

Hmmmm interesting indeed

that’s because assist values are on a per weapon basis for balance, aim assist on BR for example is VERY strong, the assist on pistol is comparatively weak, you just have to get used to it.

I actually think that might be due to red reticle range and us not knowing what it is in many situations. The AA drop off is due to there being no Ease-In for the AA- it’s like a binary on/off when your reticle is close to the opponent. It makes it harder to aim rather than easier in many situations as it completely throws off your sensitivity. It’s like going from a 5 sens to a 2 sens but only when you’re in a fight- that doesn’t really help aim, it just makes it harder to move the joystick so you feel like you’re constantly fighting through molasses.

I’m sorry, but there is input-based matchmaking as well as input-based ranked playlists. 343’s priority needs to be making all inputs feel great to play, not balancing controller with M&K.

The controller needs to feel great for the biggest population using it: causal players coming from prior Halo entries on console.

Any casual player on xbox is going to walk away from this game after a few days of playing mainly bc of this issue.

I’m cross-posting a related piece of information here for anyone playing controller on Steam. There’s currently an issue with the default controller profile on Steam for Infinite and it’s breaking the aim. I know this isn’t applicable for everyone, but it should help anyone having problems specifically on Steam if they’re getting the controller stick performance issues confused with auto aim deficiency.

Hi all,

This post is fairly lengthy but I promise it’s worth stepping through here if you’re playing with a controller on Steam PC and feeling like the aim just isn’t right. I’ve got a brief description below as well as multiple methods to fix the problems with aim, and then some supplemental information at the bottom.

BACKGROUND:

After playing Infinite on launch my hopes were dashed by what felt like one of the worst controller aim implementations I’ve experienced in a Halo game. Regardless of how much tweaking I did for my in-game settings, the aim just did not feel good at all. Sensitivity, dead zones, and acceleration were all over the place when aiming compared to MCC.

Some of you may already be aware of this, but I was not - By default, Steam is overlaying it’s own controller dead zones and acceleration curves on top of what you’re setting up in-game. If you haven’t played with the Steam controller configuration on your own yet (or even if you have), I can all but guarantee your aiming experience in Halo is about to take a giant leap forward. Steps are below so you can try for yourself.

SOLUTIONS:

Method 1:

  1. Right click Halo Infinite from your game library
  2. Click ‘Properties…’
  3. Select ‘Controller’ from the left panel
  4. Under the ‘Override for Halo Infinite’ drop-down list, select ‘Disable Steam Input’

Method 2:

  1. Enter ‘Big Picture Mode’
  2. Navigate to ‘Library’
  3. Navigate to Halo Infinite and select the game
  4. Select ‘Manage Game’
  5. Select ‘Controller Options’
  6. In the ‘Steam Input Per-Game Setting’ drop-down list choose the ‘Forced Off’ option

Method 3:

  1. This one isn’t a set of steps for Steam, but you also have the option of simply installing and playing the game through the Xbox application instead, where this issue is not present.

By following the above steps, you’re disabling anything Steam is changing about how your sticks function, and leaving it solely up to the Infinite in-game settings.

To close this post out, I’d like to thank 343 for putting out an incredible game multiple weeks ahead of the launch date. Thank you!!!

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:

– Explanation of sensitivity, dead zones, and acceleration –

I feel like I should add that fully understanding the fundamentals of acceleration, sensitivity, dead zones, and the max input threshold are also very important to be able to tweak and fine tune your settings to something that will cater best to your preferences and playstyle. There is a great youtube video for MCC that does a good job of explaining how dead zones and acceleration (and acceleration zone a.k.a. max input threshold) work. Search for “Halo MCC - Modern Aiming Explained” by No Strings Prd.

– Special note for Dual Shock controller users –

If you’re using a Dual Shock and aren’t using DS4Windows, I think you might need to get that installed so that Windows will natively recognize the controller, and not just Steam. I no longer use a DS controller but have for many years and this software worked great and continues to get active updates. Simply search “ds4windows” on google and the first result should be the github for ryochan7.

EDIT: I made this post while still using the One X. My Series X arrived since then, and I no longer have any issues with lag/fps, and that seems to have done the trick to a large degree.

However, there are still a couple of things having a negative impact. Some of the weapons like the Commando and sentinel beam just feel unwieldy with the amount of recoil they have. Also, there are apparently no collisions between enemies either, often making close encounters awkward, especially when coupled with the lack of magnetism.
