Kilo Five

Hey Spartans,

I’m currently halfway through the Kilo Five book trilogy and I’m just curious about some opinions of my fellow readers. No spoilers if you’ve finished it though!

Do you have a favorite character from the series? Did you enjoy the way Traviss wrote? How do you feel about the conflicts and resolutions in the stories?

And obvi, do you have a favorite of the three?

Lemme know!

Jul mdama was my favorite character in both glass lands and Thursday war…overall though, kilo 5 is very underwhelming and travis basically neuter’s elites and has a huge vendetta against halsey

Fair point about the Elite’s haha they were really timid even when they were fighting one another. Kinda lackluster imo

BB takes the cake.

I enjoyed Kilo 5 a lot even for its flaws (and there ARE flaws). It’s a very unique and colorful addition to the EU. Adds and deepens the universe far more than it damages it.

BB had some of the best lines in the story haha such a smartass

I wasn’t really a fan of it until Mortal Dictata and even then any positivity I had about it faded when that book came to a close. If I had to pick a favorite character, it’d be Staffan Sentzke. You’ll eventually see why, he’s actually got a valid reason to be the way he is. Everything else was just…mediocre to bad. The trilogy doesn’t really amount to much either by the time it’s done. I was just satisfied books that wouldn’t stop calling Halsey a -Yoink!- was over.

The parts in Glasslands with the IIIs and Blue was nice. Im just glad that she got them out of the Shield World and back into the canon again.
Everything else is EH

I did like the exploration of the effects of glassing, and would have loved to see this gone into more depth. However, my mind does not recollect the story as well as I would like. Therefore, it possibly was less impressionistic than other novels. Still the Glassing subject matter was interesting.

I really enjoyed them. Traviss does have some choices that make many of us just mad. If you try looking past those, they are good, solidly written books. But I don’t think I want her to write anymore Halo. She also fills chapters with too much fluff and internal moral debates while getting to the point. Reminds me of her Republic Commando books. I loved those, and they were my favorite SW books until I read Timothy Zahn’s Thrawn Trilogy.

I accept the bigger canonical events, but regard the execution of it as garbage.

Her prose is admittedly good, but yeah she does take forever to get to the point. Honestly, I don’t see why she needed a trilogy.

I see the complaints for The Kilo-Five Trilogy are very similar to the Republic Commando Books (Also by Traviss).

I’m fine with the trilogy. To me, and you might disagree which is fine, she needed to trim them down lengthwise. Then lessen, or remove alltogether the Halsey is a monster theme and what not, and you have a fantastic trilogy. I feel I understand some of the Halsey is a monster thing, but she totally overdid it.

I meant I don’t see why she needed a Trilogy if books to tell her story. Cut to fluff and it’d probably be done by book two.

That prompts me to try a non-profit, not-for-publish edit of the K5 Trilogy minus all the Halsey hate, just to see how long of a book it makes.

Could be right. I also like the arc of a trilogy. Like with The Lord of the Rings, Star Wars OT, Halo CE - 3…you get the idea. Then you have other series that are longer, but also worked nicely, like The Hunger Games films, Uncharted, and various others.
Heck, even The Forerunner Trilogy might have been parred down a bit.

Yeah I figured you wouldn’t care much for the Halsey bashing haha but I’m excited to see where Traviss goes with Naomi’s father. Thanks for avoiding spoilers!

Fair enough. I’m glad they got out too
