The game is free to play and you get 1 free character to start with, though I think they released a free DLC bundle not too long ago. Extra DLC / characters are available to purchase

As someone who actually plays Killer Instinct it’s released in seasons so far we are on season 3 and each season you can buy either the combo breaker edition which would grant you all the characters and stages in that season or ultra edition which gives you the retro costumes and extra accessories on top, plus depending on season 1 or 2 the classic killer instinct and killer instinct 2.
If you want you can buy the full game in one rather than buying characters or seasons individually with the supreme edition for $44.99 which grants you all 23 characters with 3 to come later, all retro costumes and accessories for all characters, both classic Killer Instinct 1 and Killer instinct 2, all 20 stages, double XP and 18’000 KI gold to spend on unlocking concept art, colors and accessories early.
You can try it for free with a rotating character if you’re still not sure but I would highly recommend it if you’re a fan or fighting games in any way shape of form.
