Kiki Wolfkill confirms the TV isn’t canon

In a recent Twitch discussion here: https://clips.twitch.tv/EntertainingAuspiciousSquirrelCurseLit-uXJY900odMfrFnyh?tt_content=url&tt_medium=clips_api, Kiki Wolfkill confirms that the TV show won’t be canon, calling the TV as part of a “silver timeline’. What’d you think of them officially stating the show isn’t a part of canon?

I am not quite sure what exactly would require such a drastic change to the canon that it would need to be stated.

Any movie or tv show is an adaptation. Game of Thrones is not a 1 for 1 of the books and even in the first season made significant changes.

If it backfires, the last thing they should do is attack the Halo fanbase. I hope 343 remembers that.
I wish it the best of luck, but if it deviates too much from the establshed canon/lore, I’ll be tuning out ASAP.

I’m fine with it being on-canon if they change dates here and there, stuff like that. However, if they fundamentally change core things like characters’ personalities and relationships, then yeah I’m gonna be really annoyed and turned off by it. Here’s hoping I’m wrong and even though it’s non-canon, I’ll enjoy it.

I’ll give an example -

  • Minor change - Making a bigger deal about Cortanas creation than was the case in the books. She’s not just a normal AI.

  • Moderate change - Bringing in knowledge of the Forerunners/Flood earlier (Halo Wars did this too to be fair) or making more interactions between humanity and the Covenant for drama instead of just total war.

  • Massive change - Pushing Halo 4/5 plot into the events of the Human Covenant war.

I mean I am honestly not sure what would require a change significant enough to have to make that statement.

I’m not sure if this is a good thing or not.

On one hand this is good because then I really don’t care what they do with the TV show in terms of changes because now they can do whatever they want and I honestly wont care.

On the the other-hand… Now I just really don’t care about it at all. The books are enough for me and based on what Ive seen of the TV show the creators don’t really care about the halo universe (although I could be wrong about this). That and I certainly am not getting a subscription to paramount+. Netflix? Sure, but not paramount.

Not necessarily a bad thing. The witcher tv series isn’t linked up to the game. And look how good that is.

It’ll still be worth the watch I say

It’s been announced as non-canon before this. I can’t remember where this was announced before, but I am almost certain it was.

As for it not being canon, I couldn’t care. It means there won’t be any clashes if it doesn’t turn out well or favourable. It also means fans can enjoy it for what it is and what it brings to the table.

I’ve been following the development of this show closely for a long time and even more so when the show was originally announced to premier on Showtime. With that said and what I have been reading from various online tid-bits and articles over the years , I can confidently say that Gary S Levine, the man who helped bring this into fruitation has absolutely fallen in love with Halo and it’s lore the moment he found out about it.

From the very beginning he wanted this to be for the fans, he picked men and woman who would hold true to the lore as much as possible for us the fans. He wanted to work closely with 343i. I believe that is why they already had show runners leave, directors and writers leave because it’s the Halo way or the highway! For not for Gary S Levine this may have been just another crap fest. This is the guy since day one of announcing Halo on Showtime that he wanted it to contend with Game of Thrones, he secured the budget as he put it, “As big as Game of Thrones per episode” so production would run. It was he (another guy can’t remember who) that made the call to have the show release on Paramount plus to reach more of a wider audience and for practical reasons that Paramount was establishing it’s self already with Star Trek shows so it made more sense.

All I know is, at the very very top, the love of lore is there. So if it get ruined it’s not because of the executives like usual. Just Google Gary S Levine Halo show and read articles from the past 5-6 years ago and so on. You’ll feel his passion for this as if he was a gamer from day one. You can just tell more than anyone he wants this to succeed in a huge way!!

Smart move. I can still enjoy it for what it is without being mad that it “ruined” or changed something for the worse. And if it’s great then great!

I cannot find the mans name on anywhere significant (although that was a brief glance at a few pages) on things like writers, directors, or even producers. So I doubt he has as much say as you hope.

Again we shall see, but the fact that there saying it’s non-canon should both raise and alleviate concerns to how close they are going to be following it.

This includes things like elites raising humans. But i have been out of the lore for a few years so unless somethings changed that I’m not aware of that is highly odd… That and there is always a circumstance for it I suppose…? it really depends the context.

The casting was very outside of canon. It hasn’t been explicitly said before now, but definitely implied.

I am glad to see they are finally admitting it won’t be cannon which most could somewhat tell already. Doesn’t mean the show won’t necessarily be bad but it would have been better for Halo fans if it were cannon.

I mean I am fairly certain it has been mentioned somewhere prior to this. What bugs me the most is not knowing where. It could’ve been due to the casting confusion that 343 had to announce it somewhere. Perhaps a Tweet
