> Kevin Franklin, Multiplayer Design Director at 343 Industries speaks on the challenges of engaging a hardcore player base, as well as expanding Halo multiplayer to appeal to new players. Using production BI and statistics, the talk will cover the learnings of data-driven design on multiplayer engagement in Halo 4. The talk will conclude with details on 343’s upcoming title, Halo 5: Guardians, the largest investment in multiplayer ever by Microsoft – and contrast this with FPS engagement approaches taken around the globe.

Really interesting to see the playlist charts between Halo 2 and Halo 4.

Interesting. They said Halo 4’s biggest played playlist was Big Team Battle, and it looks like it’s by a LOT, yet they’re not launching Halo 5 with it. Not hating or trying to start anything, but it’s just an interesting approach.

Interesting, thanks for the link.

They are hoping that the Big Team Battle players will gravitate to Warzone. It’s essentially Infinity BTB on steroids.

Up until Halo 4, 4v4 was the most popular ones.

I’d say Big Team Battle’s popularity was due to the mechanics working better in that environment than smaller scale.
I remember quite a while back, two years or so perhaps, when there was a debate about the population charts. A comparison between Team Slayer and BTB was made. At launch, Team Slayer was more popular than BTB for about a week, then it saw a rapid decline in population while at that same time BTB saw an increase.

That’s definitely a good point. That was the same for me in Halo 4 when I tried it. I only cared about BTB since the mechanics and everything made more sense in the bigger scale.

Yet they’re not launching with both so that players can try both and decide which they like more.

The simple explanation why H4 BTB > 4VS4 was that all the maps were BTB maps. Sure people say the H4 mechanics required larger maps and I semi-jokingly/semi-seriously reply that H4 mechanics shoved in H2’s Midship would be wonderful.

Why does 343 say they cant just remake halo 1,2,3 I dont want that either I want a game that actually plays like halo which is h1,h2,h3 type of game play. The last time we had one of those games was 2007 that is 8 years ago that style never got old. The only thing wrong with halo 5 from a game play stand point now is sprint the other Spartan abilities are fine. This post is my opinion.

¯_(ツ)_/¯
Why not try the new mode and if you don’t like it, say so so they can add BTB faster? I won’t be down on it until I actually try it, rather than just basing opinions off of looks and descriptions.

That’s probably why they released MCC to be honest, to give purists or classic Halo fans a choice to play between the new Halo or the older ones. Best of both worlds. I’m sure they weren’t expecting a buggy launch, but once it’s fixed… what’s the point of re-doing the h1/h2/h3 style of gameplay when you can already play it? Just my opinion, not trying to bash or anything.

We still want a new game, and new ideas and innovations and improvements. Same way Halo 2 changed from CE, and same way Halo 3 changed from 2. They were all excellent games without drastically changing the way it’s played. We WOULD just replay Halo 3, but since we’ve got all the achievements, all the armor, everyone’s already a really high level in MM, we’ve exhausted the maps, and we’ve played the campaign dozens of times, etc. there’s not much of a point other than its gameplay. Obviously it’s not ALL we want.
That’s the reason.

very interesting and the DLC they did for halo 4 only made the population for halo 4 even worse so thank god all the DLC is free for Halo 5 it seems they really trying to not have halo 5 suffer the same mistakes halo 4 did regarding population and regarding MCC regardless of what 343 haters think im pretty sure they weren’t expecting the game to be as broken as they did I criticize them for their mistakes made with 4 and more time should of been on MCC maybe release it after halo 5 who knows what would of happened all I know is that they are trying to make up for their mistakes with halo 5 I just hope it pays off I really do for the sake of the franchise as a whole

Not surprised BTB was the most popular in H4, it will be in H5 as well and the reason is this: MAPS AND VEHICLES

for whatever reason 343s small maps are for the most part…terrible, other than truth I didn’t really like any maps in the beta, none of them have that hang em high/lockout/ivory tower kind of unique feel to them, it just feels like a series of hallways to run down and shoot guys, where as their large maps are more outdoorsy which naturally provides more interesting combat scenarios + adds vehicles into the mix

well to be fair we haven’t seen all the maps for launch not to mention 15+ maps for FREE as DLC so that is yet to be judged until launch

Its Halo 4 loadouts, 24 players btb with cards that give you different types of vehicles, maybe different types of scopes for every weapon plus Ai. Although I wouldn’t say its on steroids because they just added 6 players, gave us more freedom on choices(I mean comon that’s a given) and ai enemies along with friendlies, with 4x bigger maps(maybe the only reason but 6 additional players doesn’t seem to be enough) . Yet when I see BF4, Warzone only has Ai so yea its bigger than BTB but that’s about it unless you want to keep saying “there’s ai, all these vehicles, way bigger maps and more players!”. Yea… I don’t think everyone will get vehicles not enough to make it seem like “Warzone” if they bumped up the player count then I could see the steroids part but then again I’m just used to BF4 battles so I’m not swayed.

we will see how it plays out at launch

I thought the same - yet at the same time this style of play became more and more popular as both the series and it’s fans grew older and older as well… I think he just wanted to point out that BTB experiences grew in popularity from H2, H3, Reach to H4.

From my own experience: I played a lot of H2 system link and was a quite dedicated H3 2 on 2 player… but as I grew older and older I had less and less time and played more and more BTB because it was simply easier to get into.

A big difference is that there would be potentially more than one flying vehicle/tank per team as in the normal BTB. With the req system, people who reach the appropriate level can spawn in any vehicle they have, instead of fighting over their teammates for a newly spawned scorpion.

That’s where it might start getting unfair rather than each team has equal vehicles. It might play a lot worse when a whole team can get tanks while the other possibly can’t. This is only an example but if this scenario proves to be true instead of limiting an amount of vehicles(like maybe three max of each kind). Then hopefully it won’t be game breaking like that. Besides equal starts for vehicles for btb might end up beating out(most won’t be as interested) this possible unfair game mode.
