Karate system (AKA melee)

So I’ve been wondering how exactly does the melee system work. In previous games, it was just about getting close, then pressing the punch button and the person I was looking at got punched.
Now, I hit the punch button, my spartan kinda like tries to punch but hits an invisible force field and doesn’t punch anything. That happens sometimes even three times in row so I really want to know, what’s the system behind this.
It’s not like the hits are canceling out. I sometimes am unable to punch people who aren’t even trying to punch me back and I’ve gotten into fights where we both killed each other with melee.
Does anybody know how it actually works?

It’s the blam melee damage range. It’s area of effect is too small.

In Halo 2, 3, and Reach, this was compensated with lunge.

But Halo 4 has greatly reduced the lunge while neglecting to adjust the melee range accordingly. Which makes meleeing less viable and even more slower cqc paced.

When I demanded lunge be nerfed, I also wanted the melee range to be increased like in CE. This is not what I had in mind at all.

I have never experienced this. Are you sure it’s not just lag?

No, it’s not lag.
I think it’s really what Sliding Ghost says. I’m literally touching the guy (no -Yoink!-) and if he’s moving backwards and I try to melee, he doesn’t get punched in the face.

Liar.
