Know Your Anniversary
The Definitive Game Resource

**What is "Know Your Anniversary" (K.Y.A.)?**

Know your Anniversary is a community project that aims to cover every drop of information for the game “Halo Combat Evolved: Anniversary” and provide users with a reference before posting a question in the forums. Anniversary was released on the 15th of November, 2011. 10 years to the day after the original game of the decade, and the release of the Xbox console.

Know your Anniversary was originally constructed by myself, but any detail can be added by yourselves, the wonderful Halo Waypoint Community.

The guide will serve as an FAQ for questions that are… well, frequently asked! It will also serve as a knowledge bank for all kinds of information, such as Skulls, Weapons, Vehicles, Maps, Achievements, Matchmaking Details, and anything else you guys suggest!

**How can I help?**

Adding to the guide is easy! simply post all the information you wish to be added to this resource, in a well formatted manner, and I will build it into the first few posts of this thread.

If you are not sure as to the relevance to what you are going to suggest, as long as it is relevant to Halo Anniversary, it probably fits here, so post it!

Section 1.1: Overview

Created in celebration of the 10th anniversary of one of the most beloved franchises in gaming history, Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary is a spectacularly remastered version of the original Halo campaign. Bundled with seven of the most popular multiplayer maps in Halo history ready for Xbox LIVE, Halo: Anniversary will include a bounty of new features including cooperative play over Xbox LIVE, Achievements, new challenges, and new fiction to uncover. [1]Section 1.2: Notes

  • Halo Anniversary was developed by 343 Industries in parternership with Saber Interactive and Certain Affinity.

  • The remastered Campaign contains Halo CE’s original code, so weapons, gameplay, and missions, are exactly as they were 10 years ago, now enhanced using a togglable overlaying graphics engine (developed by Saber Interactive), to add immense amounts of detail to the game.
  • The Campaign has remasted audio, as recorded by Skywalker Orchestra, using sheet music transcribed from Marty O’Donnells original masterpieces.
  • The multiplayer aspect of the game augments the Halo Reach experience, adding 6 classic, remade multiplayer maps, and one firefight map. These maps can be downloaded as DLC as of 11/15/11. [8]
  • There are Halo Anniversary specific playlists in Halo Reach that require the multiplayer maps to enter. [8]
  • The Title Update downloaded for Halo Reach added features that allowed Halo Anniversary to be a reality.
  • The soundtrack for the game will be avaliable on vinyl on 11/15/11 [9]

Section 2.3: Skulls

> Skulls, which just so happen to make for spooky Halloween decorations, are bony structures in the head. Within the world of Halo though, they are also game-modifiers, and Halo: Anniversary is not only bringing back your favorites but also introducing some new ones. In order to leave an air of mystery around them, I will tell you their names but I won’t be revealing what they do. Gotta leave a few surprises for the first night, right? By the way, if you’re wondering where the skulls are hidden, I recently asked Chad just that, and the only response I got was a frighteningly long bout of maniacal laughter. It’s not looking good for us, fellow skull hunters, it’s not looking good. [10]

It is noted that the better the skull is for you, the harder it is to find.
By saying this, I think the Bandanna skull will be the hardest to find.

There are 13 skulls in the game, 9 Gold and 4 Silver, the skulls must first be found in order to be used:

>> External Link: “Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary - Skulls & Terminals Guide” on YouTube

  1. Gold Skulls:*
  • Description: Shields only regenerate when you melee an enemy.
  • Mission: The Library
  • Location: In the back of one of the vents before entering the Index chamber for the first time.
On the first floor at the beginning of the level, you will notice squarish openings in the ceiling that the flood use to enter the level. Before entering the round, yellow room, find the vent closest to that door and do a grenade jump into it. The skull will be waiting for you.
  • Video
  • Description: Removes auto-aim / bullet magnetism.
  • Mission: The Library
  • Location: Behind the Index on the final platform.
Instead of running onto the platform to grab the Index, instead go around as far from the Index as you can. The skull will be waiting on the ground right behind it.
  • Video
  • Description: Enemy weapon drops halve in ammunition.
  • Mission: Silent Cartographer
  • Location: The top of the small plateau on the Beach.
From the start of the level, after exiting the Pelican immediately turn around and begin walking the other direction. You’ll eventually come to a part of the island with a large piece of land right in the middle of it with a ramp going up the side. Scale it and the skull will be waiting at the top (Likewise, if you wait until after you activate the security console, the plateau will be immediately ahead of you as you exit the building. A scarab will now be crashed beside it.)
  • Video
  • Description: Removes motion tracker from the HUD.
  • Mission: Assault on the Control Room
  • Location: In the center of the room immediately before you set foot into the canyon.
After crossing the first bridge and taking the elevator down to the ground floor, the skull will be on a raised platform in the center of this room and will be surrounded by fog. It will require a grenade jump to reach it.
  • Video
  • Description: When enabled, you cannot pick up Covenant weaponry.
  • Mission: Truth & Reconciliation
  • Location: Behind the door that the 3rd set of hunters emerge from in the hangar bay.
When you enter the large hangar bay (the room with the large shielded openings that the Pelican uses to drop off marines) kill all of the enemies, but ensure you’re close to the far right-side of the room when you finish them off. When the music suddenly picks up, be ready to go through the doors that open. Without an enemy near them, they won’t open again. The skulls will be just inside.
  • Video
  • Description: If you die playing Solo, the mission restarts, if Co-op, you go to the most recent checkpoint.
  • Mission: Pillar of Autumn
  • Location: Located behind a cryo tube at the beginning of the level.
  • Video
  • Description: On spawn, a random element of the HUD will not be present.
  • Mission: Assault on the Control Room

  • Mission: 343 Guilty Spark
  • Location: Located to the left of the Facility in a little drop behind a shade turret.
When you cross the fallen tree, you’ll see a shade turret blow up and assault rifle fire coming from the structure. Instead of going inside, immediately go to the left and keep against the back wall. you’ll come to a turet with a small drop behind it. Slide down the drop carefully and the skull will be waiting for you at the bottom.
  • Video

Silver Skulls:

  • Description: Infinite Ammunition.
  • Mission: Silent Cartographer
  • Location: At the end of the tunnel on the ceiling in the Security console building.

  • Mission: Halo
  • Location: Just before entering the underground tunnel.
After having the warthog dropped off, proceed like normal, but instead of going down into the trench, go around the cliff edge on the right side and it should show up after a moment.
  • Video
  • Description: When a grunt is killed with a headshot, it explodes into confetti.
  • Mission: The Maw
  • Location: On a railing near where Foehammer is shot down.

Section 2.6: Weapons

Weapons are the same as they were in Halo Combat Evolved [11]:

UNSC Weaponry:

Pistol - The M6D is a powerful, accurate weapon that can be used up to 124 meters. It has good clip capacity (12 rounds), a 2X zoom scope for semi-sniping, and its bullets create a very small explosion on impact. The M6D Pistol is semi-automatic and recoil operated. If used correctly it can be the best back up weapon in the game, especially when you are sniping and don’t have a Sniper Rifle. It can kill another player with three shots to the head and can dispatch a Hunter with one shot to the back if you accurately hit their exposed flesh. It has been said to be one of the most effective weapons in the game, as it is fast, accurate, and deadly in the hands of a professional. In fact, the only level it does not appear in, “Truth and Reconciliation”, is made difficult without this weapon, so the Sniper Rifle with more ammo capacity is used instead.

Assault Rifle - The MA5B Assault Rifle is an automatic gas operated rifle that fires 7.62mm armor-piercing rounds. It has low damage per hit, and low accuracy at medium to long ranges. This weapon is good for close and medium ranges. The player will start off with one in most levels. It is a decent all around weapon, with a fast melee and good maneuverability. It is one of the best weapons against infection forms, grunts, invisible Elites, and sometimes Hunters. An interesting note is that no matter what weapons you’re wielding, all of the cutscenes in Halo: Combat Evolved have the Master Chief holding an Assault Rifle - even in Two Betrayals, where your starting weapons are the M90 Shotgun and the Plasma Pistol.

Shotgun - the M90 Shotgun is practically the best weapon for picking off Flood Combat Forms and Carrier Forms, killing them with one hit if you are close enough. It is highly effective against Elites also. The shotgun fires a burst of 15 pellets, causing enemies in close range to be completely decimated in less than a second. Medium range is not so effective, and long range is useless altogether. Its close range capabilities are unmatched and are what makes it so effective against the flood.

Sniper Rifle - The S2 variant of the Sniper Rifle features a night vision enhancement to the scope, which plays an essential part at the start of Truth and Reconciliation. Its devastating power and range make it a formidable part of your arsenal. It carries four bullets per magazine and can pick off most enemies instantly, depending on their rank and the difficulty the player is playing. The Flood are barely affected by this weapon, sometimes taking 12 sniper shots to kill one. Thus, it is not worth the ammunition, which is often hard to come by on levels featuring flood.

Rocket Launcher - The Rocket Launcher is a devastating piece of equipment when used correctly. The Rocket Launcher will kill anything with one direct hit except Hunters and higher-ranking Elites on Legendary difficulty. It is the player’s best choice against vehicles and groups of infantry.
Fragmentation Grenade - The technically named M9 HE-DP grenade, more commonly known as a Frag Grenade, will easily kill anything without a shield. Its bounciness gives it the edge in distance over the Plasma Grenade and it also packs a lot of force and splash damage. This means it is useful for Grenade Jumps.

Warthog Chaingun Turret - The LRV Light Anti Aircraft Turret is always equipped on the back of a Warthog, serving its purpose of eliminating enemies and vehicles quickly and effectively. Prolonged fire degrades accuracy.

…Continues in the next post…

Section 2.6: Weapons (continued)

Covenant Weaponry:

Energy Sword - A deadly weapon used by Zealot Elites and Field Master Elites. It can kill the player in one hit (although not on Easy difficulty where it takes three). It is advisable to dispatch the wielder quickly. The player cannot use the Energy Sword due to a built in fail safe.

Plasma Rifle - It is a common light weapon in the Covenant army, primarily wielded by Elites. The Plasma Rifle has a high rate of fire and deals out a moderate amount of damage. A Plasma Rifle with a shotgun makes a good combo, Plasma Rifle for medium range and shotgun for close range. On Legendary, the Plasma Rifle is the most effective mid to close range weapon, best paired with an M90 Shotgun. It is also very useful for depleting Elite shields.

Plasma Pistol - The Plasma Pistol, like the Plasma Rifle, is a directed energy weapon that fires bolts of superheated ionized gas otherwise known as plasma. Dumping energy into the firing mechanism will allow a build up of plasma that, when fired, will instantly and completely deplete shields regardless of strength. This overcharging makes it a valuable weapon in Multiplayer and against Elites, Jackals, and Sentinels in Campaign, usually when paired with an M6D Pistol. An overcharged Plasma Pistol also has a limited tracking ability, which can be useful to take down fast moving Sentinels and unsuspecting Elites.

Needler - The Needler fires semi-homing crystal shards that explode approximately ten seconds after being launched and ignore most forms of personal energy shielding. While one explosion produces fairly light damage, several crystals exploding in succession can multiply the damage to fatal levels, and even more crystals in the same enemy will produce a large explosion. It is strange that independent ammunition that isn’t already in another Needler is exceedingly rare.

Fuel Rod Gun - The Fuel Rod Gun is used by the strongest and weakest of the Covenant species. It is carried on the shoulders of many Special Operation Grunts, and a modified version is directly attached on the right arm of Hunters. In Campaign mode the gun explodes like a green Plasma Grenade when its Covenant wielder is killed.

Plasma Grenade - The Covenant Plasma Grenade is one of the most ingenious weapons in the game. Once activated, its outer layer converts to plasma, enabling it to fuse/stick to whatever it impacts (except for most walls and Hunter armor). It generates an electro-magnetic pulse that drains instantly any kind of shielding, no matter how strong it is, making it deadly even to enemies who survive the initial explosion. It is also handy for sticking enemies themselves, especially Grunts, who tend to run toward their comrades when panicking, as well as Elite Zealots.

Shade - A stationary gun turret manned in third-person like a vehicle. It consists of a stand and a floating 360 degree rotating turret-like seat with control systems to its gun. It has a strong anti-tank ability, but the Covenant use it mainly against infantry. It can be manned by Elites and Grunts, and is similar to the turret mounted on Spirit-class drop ships.

Section 2.7: Vehicles

Vehicles are the same as they were in Halo Combat Evolved [11]:

UNSC Vehicles:

Warthog - A UNSC Light Reconnaissance Vehicle. The Warthog sports a 12.7mm Gatling style M41 Light Anti Air Gun turret that can tear through armor and shields alike.

Scorpion - A UNSC Main Battle Tank. It has a powerful 90 mm cannon mounted on a turret, affixed to the rear of the chassis. It also features a 7.62 mm machine gun aside the main cannon. It should be noted that both the main cannon and machine gun are inaccurate at medium to long range distances.

Covenant Vehicles:

Ghost - A Covenant Reconnaissance and Rapid Attack Vehicle. Its twin Plasma Cannons complement its high speed and agility, Allowing the user to blast enemies with the guns and run them into the ground. It is destructible in Campaign. It also has a feature that increases anti-gravity power in the front, causing the Ghost to nose up. This can be used to stabilize the Ghost after gliding over a cliff or hill, or to splatter opposition. Unlike Halo 2 and 3, this model has no boost but fires faster than its later models.

Banshee - A Covenant Aerial Assault Aircraft. Very maneuverable. Armed with two plasma cannons and a fuel rod cannon. The Banshee’s armor is strongest in front and very weak on the sides and back. It is destructible in Campaign but is, like all vehicles, impervious to permanent destruction in Halo PC’s multiplayer. Unlike Halo 2 and 3, this model has no boost, and fires slower, making it an earlier, less effective model. The Banshee is unavailable in Multiplayer in the Xbox version. It is probably the lightest vehicle as it can take less than a M6D clip before it blows.

Wraith - The Type-26 Assault Gun Carriage, is the primary armored fighting vehicle used by the Covenant. The Covenant deploy the Wraith as a first-strike ground assault vehicle in tactical ground engagements, they use the vehicle as a weapons platform to bring down structures in the way of ground forces attempting to advance in a area, as well as to destroy enemy armor possessing a threat to their own infantry. In addition the Wraith is used to break infantry rank by both physical and physiological force.

Section 2.8: Kinect & 3D

Halo Anniversary will support Voice features for Kinect, and passive 3D for 3D TVs.

For Kinect, a player may use voice commands such as “reload”, or “grenade” instead of using a controller. Another feature included is “Analyze”, which will scan an item in game, and bring up a description and some facts about the weapon, enemy, vehicle, etc. [12]

A tip for Kinect:

> Some of you may have had the same experiences i have, Casually smashin up some Elites and grunts then…BOOM! Master Chief randomly throws a grenade…WTF? Ok i assume i may have hit the trigger by mistake, Then afew minutes later it happens again. Ok WTF is that all about? this thrown in with the random pause now and then really got me thinking.
> If your having the same or similar issues. Fear not! As ive solved it!
>
> Simply pause the game, Go to the Kinect option at the bottom of the menu. then disable ‘Kinect Voice Recognition’
> This feature is actually pretty cool. I was impressed, But my Kinect has super sonic hearing and me happily shouting at the tv while playing the game isnt gonna go away anytime soon, so disabling the option is the easier option for me.

> A: Yes! A last minute addition to the game means you can change between the soundtrack recorded by Skywalker Orchestra, and the original. This can be done in the settings menu, from the pause menu, during the campaign.

**SECTION 3**
__*MULTIPLAYER*__

Section 3.1: Overview

This section contains everything that is not a part of the Campaign. From Matchmaking, to Forge, to Theater.

Important note: <mark>The Multiplayer part of Halo Anniversary uses Halo Reach’s engine and netcode</mark>, not Halo CE’s. Hence the maps can be ran from Halo Reach (View Section 3.2).

Halo Anniversary will include 6 multiplayer maps, and 1 firefight map, these can be played from the disc, or if saved to HDD, from Halo Reach.

Section 3.2: Halo: Reach

With your copy of Halo Anniversary, you’ll receive a download code for the Multiplayer and Firefight maps. If you have a copy of Halo: Reach, it is recommended that you download the maps, as it allows you to play customs, matchmaking, forge and theater on the new maps from your copy of Halo Reach.

The CEA Map pack can also be bought from XBL, for 1200 MSP.

Section 3.3: Maps

Multiplayer Maps
Each multiplayer map ships with 2 variants, one original, as it was 10 years ago (with graphical upgrade and some minor changes), and a Reach balanced version, this second version is adapted for Halo Reach gameplay.
BATTLE CANYON

  • Overview
  • Description: “The telemetry spires in these canyons help manage the Halo ring’s vast translocation grid.”
  • Recommended Players: 2 - 8
  • History: The rocky warrens of this part of Halo provide the ideal environment for an array of impressive telemetry clusters. These spires’ synchronization conduits ensure that the ring’s translocation grid is always fully operational, part of a remarkably powerful system which allows near-instant transportation across the full ten thousand kilometers that span the installation.
  • Remake Of: Battle Creek (Halo 2) / Beaver Creek (Halo CE)
  • Reach Balanced Variant Alterations:
  • Teleporters behind base moved into new tunnels
  • Lifts added to the top of the base where the teleporters were
  • New cave tunnels added
  • Different weapons / no powerups
[This section will be updated once Anniversary releases]
  • Ideal Gametype: Multi-Flag CTF

BREAKNECK

  • Overview
  • Description: “The initial Covenant strike is over, but the fight for Mombasa has just begun.”
  • Recommended Players: 8 - 16
  • History: Section 21 once looked out onto the New Mombasa Orbital Elevator with pride and optimism. Now, with much of the city flooded by the Covenant’s brutal assault, the skyline is only a shattered ghost of what it once was as the battle for humanity’s survival continues on the streets and corridors below.
  • Remake Of: Headlong (Halo 2)
  • Reach Balanced Variant Alterations:
  • Gravity lift in place of teleporter (not confirmned)
  • Different weapons / no powerups
[This section will be updated once Anniversary releases]
  • Ideal Gametype: One Flag CTF / One Bomb Assault

HIGH NOON

  • Overview
  • Description: “Despite millennia of abandonment, transportation facilities like this one continue to function flawlessly.”
  • Recommended Players: 4 - 12
  • History: The vast generator complexes which power this enormous slipspace portal allow it to connect with an unknown number of locations across the galaxy. However, passage through this system requires a Forerunner keyship, and few command such a vessel this long after the disappearance of the portal’s creators.
  • Remake Of: Tombstone (Halo 2), Hang Em High (Halo CE)
  • Reach Balanced Variant Alterations:
  • Added tunnels
  • Different weapons / no powerups
[This section will be updated once Anniversary releases]
  • Ideal Gametype: Slayer

PENANCE

  • Overview
  • Description: “The Covenant have harnessed the waters of this moon to refuel their massive supercarriers.”
  • Recommended Players: 2 - 8
  • History: As the primary satellite of the Unggoy homeworld, Buwan provides the perfect environment for this massive Covenant hydro-facility used to power and refuel a variety of capital ships. Though still operational via automated subsystems, the station was abandoned shortly after the breaking of the Covenant.
  • Remake Of: Damnation (Halo CE)
  • Reach Balanced Variant Alterations:
  • Addition of a graviry lift
  • Bridge now continuous, does not require jumps
  • Different weapons / no powerups
[This section will be updated once Anniversary releases]
  • Ideal Gametype: FFA Slayer

RIDGELINE

  • Overview
  • Description: “Overlooking one of Halo’s impressive relay complexes, this idyllic cliffside once served as a UNSC staging area.”
  • Recommended Players: 8 - 16
  • History: Once serving as a watchpoint for the immense relay complex below, the monitoring outposts nestled atop this ridge became a staging ground for human forces during their time on Installation 04. Toward the end of the conflict, a Covenant assault brought the resistance of the marines here to a tragic end.
  • Remake Of: Timberlands (Halo CE PC)
  • Reach Balanced Variant Alterations:
  • Different weapons / no powerups
[This section will be updated once Anniversary releases]
  • Ideal Gametype: BTB Slayer

SOLITARY

  • Overview
  • Description: “The security spire’s damaged interior only hints at the terrifying power of its previous inhabitant.”
  • Recommended Players: 2 - 8
  • History: These spinning confinement platforms are a testament to the technological prowess of the Forerunners. In the event of a security breach, the facility’s suborbital location and frigid temperature were thought to be able to keep any threat at bay, but it appears those plans were… optimistic.
  • Remake Of: Prisoner (Halo CE)
  • Reach Balanced Variant Alterations:
  • Different weapons / no powerups
[This section will be updated once Anniversary releases]
  • Ideal Gametype: Team Slayer / CTF

Screenshots, weapons & vehicle spawns will be added when I get time

Section 3.3: Maps (continued)

Firefight Map

INSTALLATION 04

[/li]1. Overview

[/li]- Description: “Fight for survival around mysterious Forerunner structures on Installation 04.”

  • Recommended Players: 1 - 4

  • History: When the UNSC Pillar of Autumn arrived at Alpha Halo-also known as Installation 04-the Covenant was already there to welcome them. The conflict that followed raged across the surface of the ringworld, eventually pitting the renowned and battle-hardened ODSTs against a merciless Covenant assault, which would stop at nothing to control Halo.

  • Remake Of: Halo (Halo CE) (Campaign Mission #2)

  • The map is a part of the campaign, towards the end of the second mission entitled “Halo”. It is a cliffside forerunner facility.

  • The map brings a new experience to Firefight, ODSTs. You will be supplied, by Pelican, an unlimited supply of ODSTs, who will give you a hand in defending the large forerunner structure.[/spoiler][/spoiler]Section 3.4: Matchmaking

Playlist update changelists can be found here.

Halo Anniversary brings new playlists to Matchmaking. You will still be able to play Regular Halo Reach. The playlists are defined in the update changelist for November, Part 2, as shown in the above link. That thread will be updated whenever news comes.

  • If you have downloaded the map pack as DLC, you can play Regular Reach Matchmaking, from the Halo: Reach disc, and play Reach balanced Anniversary maps in those playlists. For example, SWAT on Solitary.
  • You can play Matchmaking from the CEA Disc, but you can ONLY play in the CEA playlists (There are 5).
  • You can use Armor abilities on the maps, due to it being in the reach engine.

It is also important to not that several of the Anniversary playlists contain TU gametypes, in fact, any game type that is not prefixed by “Anniversary” both in the Map selection voting rounds in Matchmaking, and above the scores in the bottom right of your HUD, are not Classic gametypes.

Section 3.5: Forge

Each multiplayer map will be forgeable. All of the maps, except Penance have a part of Forge World’s “Structures” section. Certain maps have new pieces, for example High Noon, Battle Canyon & Penance have new gravity lifts, and High Noon has some new blocks/inclines, etc.
High Noon has the largest forge palette, but most of the geometry on the map is NOT editable.
Ridgeline has a forge-able tree, and some new forerunner structures. Breakneck has some Human style forge pieces.
Unfortunately, only High Noon has the “Brace Large” piece.

I am constructing a full forge guide for Anniversary, and it will be posted externally by the games release, I will link it here.

Section 3.6: Firefight Any additional firefight information will go hereSection 3.7: Achievements

Here are the multiplayer Achievements. For Campaign, vist Section 2.5

Section 3.8: Easter Eggs

  1. Dolls:*
There appears to be one doll in every map. The dolls are wearing the very strange BoB (or GRD) helmet, shown in the Defiant map pack screenshots from IGN (image).
The location of all of these dolls are known, but instead of putting it in words, it is much easier to watch videos.

>> External Link: “Halo Anniversary: ALL GRD Doll Locations” on YouTube

  1. 343 Guilty Spark:*
On Installation 04, in the area called “Station 2 Interior” (and possibly “Station 1 Interior”) after a certain amount of time 343 Guilty Spark will float up to the window, before turning around and floating away again. Here is a screenshot.
  2. Blast from the past:*
Each multiplayer map has an image imprinted into it to pay homage to the original, >> External Link: “Halo: CEA - Original Map Picture Easter Eggs” on YouTube
  3. Grunt in a barrel…*
On Penance, there is a grunt that rides down the waterfall…
This video also shows you how to get the GRD doll on Penance without Forging.

Section 3.9: FAQ

  1. Q: So if I buy it can I trade in Reach?*
  2. A:* If you trade in Reach, you cant play any of the Reach default maps, or the DLC for reach (Noble and Defiant). From the CEA disc, you can only play the CEA maps.
