Justifying Red vs Blue's Reason?

This is just a little subject that came to mind, but I’ve been thinking about how 343i have tried to make up an idea for how matchmaking matches, the whole Red Team vs Blue Team thing that has been with Halo since birth (pretty much), to fit into the Halo universe.

With Halo 4, they decided to make it into a sort of, training facility program thing right? Your Spartan would practice in “virtual” (I may be wrong with that… along the lines of that though) battles to prepare themselves to then head down to requiem to fight Prometheans and the Covenant Remnant (faction or what not) in Spartan Ops.

With Halo 5, from what I can… I guess imagine, is that it’s probably running along the same lines. With this they’ve added the whole team show offy sort of thing at the beginning and end of the game (the fist bumps and what not)

Am I the only person that preferred it just, Red Team and Blue Team do not like each other, or have some unknown motive to go at war with one another so let’s take control and fight it out? I’m all for the story element of it, the story is why I’ve stayed so dedicated to this game… But I liked it when they just fought it out, and we were like “Why are they fighting anyway?”. Like the RvB series, Rooster Teeth made up their own story for it (in a way), I’m sure many other fans made up their own stories for it before it had a reason to exist (with Halo 4)

What are your thoughts? Adding it to the universe or it being an unknown thing?

Halo never needed an explanation of Red vs Blue in matchmaking. No one was the least bit bothered by the lack of one. The idea of a virtual reality training program was fine in H4. But they’ve gone way past that with H5 by turning my stoic, professional Spartan into a dudebro fratboy. And I don’t like it one bit.

The stoic professional Spartans were the S-IIs and to some extent the S-IIIs. These are neither, they are S-IVs and they were originally UNSC Marines and ODSTs who behave like…well…people. Yes they’re going to cheer, yes they’re going to taunt, yes they’re going to be louder and more obnoxious, it’s what Marines and ODSTs do.

Off-duty at a bar? Yes. During training exercises? No.

Edit: Camaraderie is fine, but it just feels so tacky and cringe-inducing in Halo 5. If you want “human” spartans that’s fine. Just leave it out of multiplayer.

These bro-fists and the like occur only at the end no? That sounds fine to me, “battle’s over time to unwind” mentality springs to mind.

Spartan IV’s aren’t professional or stoic anyways, so it doesn’t bother me that they are dudebros in h5g. Just look at majestic team in h4, they’re already dudebroing there…

The dudefratbro mentality is heavily apparent during combat as well with excessive chatter (overcongratulatory quips about how someone sliced-n-diced an opponent, etc).

Well that’s to be expected I suppose. Marines in all the games have always talked to your character depending on your prowess. From the days of CE where you’d hear Stacker yell “One down, fifty billion to go” after splattering an Elite with a Warthog or Johnson going on about “putting the fear of God into them” onwards the chatter was always there from them.

Maybe it’s just me, being the campaign fan I am, but I just see this as an extension of that kind of chatter and not bothered by it.

I liked better it when it was just one of Halo’s mysteries.

I don’t like it. My spartan is my character, and I don’t behave like that. its been that way since 2. Maybe it could be a player customization for those who want it, along with the “shoutouts”, and armor. Having it forced is annoying.

Multiplayer should never have become canon, all it did was put unnecessary limitations on the gameplay. That’s why Elites weren’t in Halo 4 (and probably Halo 5)'s multiplayer.

I’m mad.

Loll Exactlyyy marines been talking hella smack since the damn Begining you think if Johnson had the opportunity to become a spartan IV (omg which he would have been if he dint die CAN YOU IMAGINE THE BADASSNESS) he would magically become all “serious”. Think about it its like those ish talking CE marines became ODSTs by H2 and are now ish talking Spartan IVs

i kinda like the idea of it being a training type of thing, considering these are Spartans who would be going into the field (according to the way its set up anyway) makes it seem a bit more believable than “2 teams in stuck in this canyon that just happen to be red and blue trying to kill each other”.

i agree that it has its place, the chatter don’t bother me so much but the end of game celebration animations could be toned down a bit… they just seem a little awkward at the moment, i don’t mind the idea of the Spartans having a after game animation of some sort but having them strutting around as if pandering to a imaginary crowd doesn’t fit well with either the set up for the multiplayer (being a training simulation thing) or the overall feel of the game, just my opinion anyway

edit - maybe a happy middle ground could be them walking out of the simulator room / or what ever it is’s exit high fiveing and what not amongst themselves? would be better than the current one anyway

I couldn’t possibly agree more.

Just saying but i kind of like they way RvB took it. Freelancers using them practically as training dummies and what not.

Sgt Johnson Already was a Spartan, he was apart of the orion project which was basically Spartan I program

Now we are drifting off topic… Let’s get back on to it.

Well, with RvB, they made their own story, and it doesn’t really revolve around Halo’s story. Although, it is set in the same universe I’d assume, considering they often mention things such as Covenant weaponry, UNSC bases, and even the UNSC officially pardoning the Red and Blue team. So, I wouldn’t assume that’d all happen in a War Games simulation.

Are people seriously so petty that they complain about animations of what are essentially Marines turned super soldiers congratulating each other over winning in what is essentially a sport to them?

Give me a -Yoinking!-’ break!

S-IV may be marines, but they don’t need to act like that. I’m sure that there are marines that do not celebrate like a soccer player after scoring. I want to be able to choose if my spartan celebrates or is talkative during battle.

Just as an idea what if you could change your Spartans animation at the end of the game. Here’s an example: since what I have read that not many people likes the Spartans being cheerful at the end we can have the option to make them have a more serious animation. It’s just an idea.
