Just finished campaign. Horrible experience.

There are spoilers in this post, don’t read it if you haven’t beat the campaign.

I didn’t have much hope for a good storyline going into Halo 4. The trilogy ended on a fine note, and should have. But I bought the game, played through on heroic, and have some things to say.

First off, there were so many plotholes, some of which were probably because of the horrible equalization of sound, as in I didn’t hear it, which I’ll talk about later.
Now, why the hell were the covenant trying to kill Chief at the beginning? I think it would be pretty hard to not recognize the person who saved your -Yoink- 4 years ago.

But fortunately, killing elites is fun. You have to outsmart them, unlike a certain enemy we’ll be talking about later. So we go through the first level, It’s fun I guess, and then eventually we get to this random dude who I can’t tell if he’s flood or foreunner. He kinda looks like a flood, but it sounds like he says he’s a forerunner. And then they play a video where you really can’t tell who are forerunner and who are humans so you have no idea who’s winning in the war. So all I got from that was “Someone trapped me”. Dunno if he’s flood or forerunner, but whatever. So he can pick up chief. Why the hell wouldn’t he just chuck him off a cliff or smash him into the ground repeatedly? Clearly the chief is a threat to this dude, so I don’t understand why he didn’t kill chief.

So then we get these new enemies. One of them being possibly the most -Yoinking!- annoying enemies I’ve ever faced. Dogs. These things run around, climb up walls, and come in huge packs. They’re extremely tedious. It’s not like it’s a challenge to headshot them, they’re just a pain in the -Yoink- to deal with. They’re not fun.

The other new enemies are “Knights”. Cortana doesn’t tell us any useful tactics to use against them like she did for elites in previous games. We know literally nothing about them. I still don’t even know if they use shields. But all in all, they’re boring. Their ai is horrible, they literally stand where they are, shoot you when you come out from hiding, then dodge to the left or the right. Occasionally they’ll teleport to you and oneshot you and you can’t do anything about it.

There’s a huge lack of human guns in the game. It’s so hard to come across human weaponry that you usually carry around a light rifle and a forerunner pistol thingy. This pisses me off because the human weaponry are AWESOME! Running around with the shotgun feels badass, especially with the great sound effects. But no, the only shotgun I get is some -Yoink- orange one. Also, if you don’t have a weapon that can headshot, you’re -Yoinked!-. The only efficient way to kill dogs are to headshot them.

The sound: The sound effects are AWESOME! The guns really have a kick now. Unfortunately, the equalization is set so that you can’t -Yoinking!- hear voices because your guns are too loud. Also that whenever it enters a cutscene I have to turn my volume up so I can hear them. The sound of the game is around 100% but voices are around 50%. This is why a lot of the time I had no idea what was happening; I just couldn’t hear them. And subtitles really detract from the game, because you don’t even view the cutscene, your brain feels that the words are most important and focus on that.

The most important part: The story. It was horrible. In a nutshell, cortana goes crazy, chief becomes invulnerable because of a magic fairy, then chief nukes himself but somehow lives. Oh and cortana died, but no one cares about her now that she has buckteeth. It just didn’t amount to what the original trilogy cooked up. This story had weird things like the magic fairy, cortana splitting up this somehow bringing down a shield, and a gun that can’t aim itself 20 degrees to the left to fire, requiring you to pinpoint the location to shoot. I didn’t connect with any of the characters, especially since cortana’s rampancy caused her to be a -Yoink-. Chief suddenly became obsessed with cortana even though in other games he prioritized humanity first, which was quite annoying. Also, I thought halsey died a long time ago? How would halsey fix cortana?

So all in all, it was a vague story that was too far fetched for me to fully understand. It did not satisfy. So what are your thoughts on this campaign? Agree with me? Think I’m an idiot? I’d like to know.

Wow… That was the worst thing I have read in a while… The elites are a different fraction and still hate humans. The “dogs” are fine as is, and I have no problem with them. And the knights are fun and add a new taste to gameplay. And the story… it was AMAZING. It is not my fault you can not comprehend anything. Cortana had to go crazy, she was past her time, and the Liberian is NOT a fairy, she is an ancient forerunner. She did not make him invulnerable to everything, just the composer. She sped up his evolution. And chief did not nuke himself. He set the bomb and cortana used Hardlight to save him. So ignorant. Read up on lore before bashing a game.

The story rewards those who’ve read the Forunner books, Glass Lands and The Thursay War. The last 2 are based on the War between the Eiltes on their planet, and Infinity goes to their planet to show off.

Jul 'Madam is there too.

Covenant are the storm, who think the Didact is a god
Just like how HUMANS in REAL LIFE have differing views on things.
Anyway, Chief wasn’t made “invincible” by the librarian, she just gave him a geas that lead to him taking shape. She played a role just as important as Halsey, really, but it didn’t mean everything from before was pre set.
Also, rampancy of Cortana helped develop Chief as a CHARACTER, which helps leading up to 5 and 6.
Overall, the story for you was probably weird because you didn’t know the backstory. I understand though, because the game was lore intensive.
Oh, and the sound not being changable (Voice and music) bugged me as well.

LOL, that’s it!!

Only issue I have is that Master Chief is -Yoink- in this game.

A freaking downgrade!

Poor jump height… check
Poor crouch jump… check
Poor grenade jump… check
Poor traction… check
Poor damage resistance… check
Poor FoV… check
Slow grenade throw… check
Slow melee… check
Slow reload time… check
Slow recharge wait… check

It’s hideous playing as him. Even the Spartan IVs are better to play as due to the tactical packages and support upgrades (except when using jetpack or thruster pack).

Here’s a few things that botherd me.
- Promethian Knights take too many bullets and they don’t really react to getting shot. They are kinda like the brutes from Halo 2. They are not fun to fight and you have to spray them full of bullets before they die.
- Mission objectives is another thing I thought was boring. Pressing buttons all the time isn’t fun and I don’t think Chief thinks it’s fun either. I’d like more variety.
- I’m not bashing on Halo but I just hate quick time events. I’d rather kill the last boss in a boss fight or watch him getting killed in a cutscene without a quick time event.- If we take a look at the maps they are smaller and more scripted than ever before. I like big sandboxes for Halo and the new campaign maps made me feel clusterphobic compared to the other games.

As someone else said, it’s very lore intensive. Things like terminals, Halo books, and things you might miss in campaign explain a lot.

> First off, there were so many plotholes, some of which were probably because of the horrible equalization of sound, as in I didn’t hear it, which I’ll talk about later.

Since you missed it, there is a Covenant terminal in the wreckage at the beginning of the second mission. If you’re near it, you’ll hear an Elite saying “DI-DACT” over and over. Examining it causes Cortana to tell you that the fleet you encountered has been outside Requiem repeating that message for the past 3 years - they have no idea what transpired.

> But fortunately, killing elites is fun. You have to outsmart them, unlike a certain enemy we’ll be talking about later. If the fact Didact says “The Forerunners have returned” wasn’t hint enough, he’s a Forerunner - in particular, he really doesn’t care for humans…and that’s an understatement.

If your impression from that cutscene is that he thought of the Chief as a threat, you’re way off base. Didact disarmed the Chief with little effort - to the Didact, he didn’t seem like a threat initially. Besides, it would be better to leave him alive. The Didact wanted to make more Prometheans, after all.

The Ranged Forms in Halo 3 say “sup”.

face-palm

Only one-and-a-half UNSC ships (literally, Forward unto Dawn was torn in half) made it to Requiem. I would be surprised if there wasn’t a lack of UNSC weapons. But apparently I’m using common sense…and yes, you can kill Crawlers without headshotting them - the Suppressor works relatively well.

The story is only horrible is you don’t get it and/or aren’t paying attention, which, as this paragraph clearly shows, you didn’t. “Cortana goes crazy” - rampancy is not the same as insanity. “Chief becomes invulnerable because of a magic fairy” - the Chief’s evolution was accelerated to unlock the immunity to the Composer that the Librarian had hidden in the human genome - he’s not invincible. He also didn’t kill himself with the nuke; Cortana created a hard-light shield around the Chief to protect him from the blast, since she was in the system, as clearly shown when she manipulates a hard-light bridge to bind the Didact. “A gun that can’t aim itself 20 degrees to the left to fire”…ooookay? I have no idea what you’re even talking about.

> So all in all, it was a vague story that was too far fetched for me to fully understand. It did not satisfy. So what are your thoughts on this campaign? Agree with me? Think I’m an idiot? I’d like to know.

You probably should have began with the statement that you didn’t understand the campaign…

Could have been a lot better.

Tbh they should have explained at the START of the game about the “Covenant” we fought, No don’t put it in a book which i’d probably never read, but explain it at the start.

It makes sense after I read up on it, but beforehand I just sat in a corner asking myself why?
