Yes, having an MMR as the system behind the scenes is fine, with the 1-50 being the visual representation as a scale for you to understand your rank in a cohesive and simplified format where you can see your rank move between numbers
Halo 2’s system is still well regarded.
It had a simple MMR system based on W/L and your placement in the game.
If I had to criticise it - it was very slow to find your rank and probably wouldn’t translate well to objective games.
TrueSkill2 basically beats it for speed and accuracy of ranking players.
What I do like about Halo 2 is that the CSR was kept to simple divisions. 1 to 50. There was no number to grind (in a toxic manner). Nobody got to 50 and then kept having to grind to get to 50.01
Halo 2 had the worst ranking system of every Halo title. At least for getting remotely consistent games in ranked.
Halo 5’s is my favourite, then Infinite a close second.
Do you think that was because it took way too long to find your actual rank?
In Halo 2 the MMR and the CSR were essentially the same. So there was a huge lag behind your MMR and your actual playing skill.
I think it was a combination of low player count, and hyper aggressive ranking at the bottom 15 and top 15 levels. It was super easy to level up from 1-15 and harder to rank down, and super hard to rank up from 36-50 and easier to rank down. Meant that a huge portion of players ended up in the 20-30 range. With so many players bunched together under a similar umbrella, it’s harder to separate the players. Creating more games that could have unfitting players in them.
Not to mention games that only use win/loss will consistently place players outside of their actual range due to good or bad streaks further compounding balancing issues.
It just felt so random.
You didn’t play halo 2 from the beginning and it shows. The worst ranking system, really. I wildly disagree. Take out the mods the glitches and host tampering nonsense and you are left with a wildly rewarding, long and sustainable ranking system. Of course you’ll have longer wait times at the bottom and top that’s understandable considering the talent pool as you said. Again you shouldn’t get a medal just because you participated. Halo 2 had me very proud every time I went up in rank. I can’t say that for a halo game sense
A system that only works well at the start of a games lifespan is not a good system. They need to use one that works well even when population is lower.
That kind of system discouraged new players, makes rotating playlists highly unsuccessful and only even remotely works in heavily populated playlists with a good distribution of player ranks. I don’t know why anyone who is good at Halo would want it, there’s a rank cap at 50 and playing your way to your true level can take 100+ games. Why would I want to pubstomp the whole way up until I’m finally a high enough rank to play players of equal skill to myself? It’s extremely poor.
They tried to implement it into MCC due to so many people requesting it and ranked is abysmal in Halo MCC.
im not sure what the genuine complaints about Infinite’s ranking system is?
Dude I’d love this so much if they did that. The later levels were awesome too with the symbols especially the Ring for 50. I think most ppl could get on board with this idea
They should do a mix of halo 2, halo 3 and halo reach.
