The title says it all. Microsoft has really turned me off of the new console, even though I know there is a new Halo on the way.
For starters, the price is outrageous. $500 for a console is absolutely insane. At first when I preordered it, I tried to justify it, but I can’t any more. By the time I pay for the console, a game (or two), and a new Xbox live subscription (because I will need another in November), the thing will cost me over $600.
Other things that turn me off are the new mandatory kinect, no included headset, their new policy on used games, etc.
I’m seriously considering the PS4 as a more viable option at this point.
What do you all think? Will you guys be preordering/getting the Xbox One?
'Microsoft announced a major policy shift for Xbox One. The console will no longer require a draconian 24 hour check in to play games. Users will need to connect online to set up an Xbox One, but after that the console will function without the need for checking in. Microsoft also dropped restrictions on trading, lending, and game sharing for physical products. If you own a disc you can share it with a friend or resell it just like any other video game console. Downloadable games cannot be resold or shared, though, and you need to have a disc in the Xbox One’s tray to play a disc based game. Xbox One will also be region free. This is a step forward since the Xbox 360 is region locked, but publishers can choose to make a game region free or not.’
I found this quote on ‘Siliconera’. I suppose that sorts out the original silly policy on used games then.
Of course, I don’t blame you for cancelling the pre-order though. Even if the game and online issues are staring to clear up, $500 is ridiculous!
Before Microsoft changed it’s DRM policies with the Xbox One, I was sold on the PS4. I was always a Sony fanboy back in the PS2 days, however Halo brought me into the Xbox side and I’ve stayed ever since. With everything going on, the PS4 seemed to be the far superior consoles (and it still is in some respects).
However, Microsoft went back on its policies, and it changed the game. The only concern I have with the Xbox One is price and Kinect functionality. $500 for a console is a tad on the high side, especially when you factor in $60 a year for Live, >$100 for a quality headset, and another $60 if you want a wired controller (which is sold separately). I also don’t like the idea of the Kinect always needing to be plugged in, however it looks like Microsoft isn’t going to budge on that subject, considering they claim it is “essential” to the Xbox One’s functionality.
If Microsoft were smart, they’d throw in a cheap, baseline headset and offer a version without Kinect for $100 less. I’m really, really hoping they do, although I doubt it. Currently I’m suckering into the Xbox One because they have all the games I want to play (KHIII and FFXV, woo!), and the fact that my gamertag/achievements/Xbox Live account all trasnfer over just makes things convenient. I’m going to end up plopping down at least $600 for the thing, and I’m not going to be happy about it, but I’ll do it.
Here’s hoping that Halo at 60 FPS and dedi’s are worth it.
That’s awesome that they changed those things, I didn’t know that and didn’t expect them to. I may just wait for a few months after they’re both released and decide then.
I really don’t care about the kinect. I have the current version and rarely use it, so I don’t think the new one would be any different.
I’m not pre-ordering the Xbox One, but that’s not because of Microsoft or random “Draconian” rules/polices/etc. It’s simply because I cannot afford it for several years to come. It is sad, but it is also the truth.
@AvengedSabres09: I understand the price, but that’s about it. Here’s why I could care less about the problems you have listed. Mandatory Kinect allows for a market of ADULT Kinect games, instead of little kiddie games. For example, I heard about a zombie game that will penalize you for making a loud sound outside of the game, because then zombies will “hear” you and come for you. Don’t like it always being on? Turn off voice and video, and then, to be extra sure that you are the most boring thing Microsoft could be watching, TURN IT SO IT FACES A @#$%ING WALL.
My Xbox 360 that I purchased did not come with a headset. Is this a major turnoff for me? Absolutely not. I sometimes find it more fun to simply play without it and whine and scream at my enemies without having to worry about others caring.
I won’t even go into the Used Games Policy, because Microsoft has already rectified their decision.
As you can see, besides the price, there are few resons NOT to get the Xbox One. I know that I will be getting one in the future, but only when I can afford it, which may not be for some time.
I think eventually there will be a Xbox One Bundle that doesn’t have the Kinect, because I read an article(don’t have a link, sorry) that said the Xbox One may have to ship without Kinect due to some new law or some -Yoink- like that, I don’t know.
And the DRM is gone now, the only problem is the price, if they want to sell as many consoles as Sony, they have to ship a $399 version.
Just wait until PS4 cloud in 2014 is released and the price for PSN increases. According to investors Gaikai made them nervous and they want to see the ROI. Not sure it will really go up but many are predicting it. xbox already has it included in the price of live.
also I would be a little concerned that developers are making games at 30 fps for ps4. we dont know if its a restriction but killzone is definitely going to be 30fps. MS has confirmed their games would be 60fps. That is a huge deal for first person shooter games like halo, COD, etc.
As for the price - yea 500 is a lot. 449 with kinect would be much better. i am excited for kinect though. my wife loses my remote control to my tv like every day so kinect will allow me to control it through my voice which sounds awesome.
if you are on the fence, i would honestly wait until both come out. the prediction is that both will function the same (games+speed+latency)
Can we stop looking at the kinect as just a gimmic from the last generation and look at it as an actual component of the console? (Which it is now).
I own a Wii, and it comes with this Little thingy which is used for the control of the Wiimote. Kinect is basically the same thing, without a wiimote, and I don’t see them whining.
As for the headset thing, doesn’t the same kinect act as a mic too? So that’s a problema less, isn’t it?
definitely getting the xbox one. the only policy i had a real problem with is now gone. the 500 dollar price is reasonable and what i expected. all my favorite games are multi platform anyway. like destiny and metal gear. but the xbox has better exclusives imo. halo, dead rising, the new ryse and titan fall, along with the inevitable next entry in gears of war and many others. plus the online aspect has always felt better on the xbox. and the controller is undoubtedly better for shooters, or just better in general.
the xbox just suits me better overall. thats not to say i wont be getting a ps4 later down the line to experience some of its exclusives. but as of right now, i dont see any reason to jump ship.
You might want to change your mind on your preorder. Dat Xbox One controller looks AWESOME. VVVVVIIIIIIIBBBBRRRRAAAAAATTTTIIIIOOONNNNSSS AAAARRREEE CCCCCOOOOOOLLLLLLLLL. Sorry, but the vibration features on the One’s controller are so freaking awesome
The Xbox One was a Next Gen Console, now with the DRM backflip it is no longer the great Next Gen Console MS hoped for.
I do understand the cry out from alot of people but the Xbox One DRM features made it amazing. The 24hr check was a little harsh.
The Xbox One is $600 is Australia. I paid $800 for the Xbox 360, and $600 for the Original Xbox.
So $600 for the Xbox One is really really cheap considering what you are getting.
I recall the PS2 was over $1200 in Australia when it launched and the PS 3 was over $1500. But these were still a cheap DVD/Blue Ray player at the time of launch.
And you are complaining about the price.
PS cares about quantity not quality. MS that what you get quality. Having the Kinnect apart of the system means that all developers who make games for the Xbox One can implement Kinnect to their games, and it will be used, as everyone has it.

Your argument about price is moot, as you will be buying a couple of games and PSN+, which will take you to over $500 for a PS4, and according to you $500 is outrageous, so it looks like you won’t be getting a PS4 either
Also MS has U-turned on their used games policy, so your thoughts on that are pointless.
The only thing left is the price, which is justified by the Kinect. If you don’t like it, don’t buy one. Don’t come to these forums causing a stir and trying to get some attention.

I’m actually happy about that. At least it’ll make me use Kinect, I am already forced to pay for it…
As for the Xbox One, so many people were blinded by the fact that Sony b*tchslapped Microsoft at the end of E3 that they didn’t realize Microsoft had won by FAR in the games department. Project Spark and Killer Instinct will be free to play at launch, and then there is Ryse, Quantom Break, Titanfall, Minecraft, Sunset Overdrive, Dead Rising 3, Black Tusk’s game (which is intended to be Microsoft’s next big thing) and let’s not forget Halo, and Crackdown and Fable in the works as well as all the good multiplatform games (The Witcher 3, Destiny, AC4 and even MGSV). I don’t know about you, but I buy consoles for the games, not for a hundred dollar price cut. Microsoft owned in that department, where Sony was lackluster IMO.
killzone is confirmed at 30fps. MS has said its games will be 60fps. We do not know if the ps4 is locked but at this point all of their new releases are 30. so if you are playing a game and there is any kind of lag, it will appear awful at 30 whereas at 60 it will still be smooth and you will not know there was lag.
"When it comes to the state of software development on PS4, the situation as it stands is surprising. On the one hand, freely playable first-party titles such as Knack and DriveClub suffer from noticeable frame-rate stutters down from 30fps, while on the other, “hands off” demos for the new Infamous and Assassin’s Creed games appear to run without a perceptible hitch. This is in stark contrast to the playable software confirmed to be running direct from Xbox One hardware, such as Forza Motorsport 5 and Killer Instinct, which benefit to no end for targeting the 1080p60 gold standard, and largely succeed in doing so.
Such a disparity in performance is far from the outcome we had expected going in to E3, but Sony’s agenda with this initial wave of games is clearly hinging on visual fireworks rather than maximising frame-rates to the full 60Hz refresh." souce http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=595991

Am I the only one that deactivates the vibration feature in every shooter game because it disturbs the aiming?
