Actually, I am religious. I am Ásatrú. A Norse Pagan. Not the weird racist sect, mind you - my wife is Filipino and our girlfriend is Italian. I mean, I’m wearing an Yggdrasil pendant that features Hati and Skoll, a Mjolnir pendant, an Aegishjalmur pendant, an Yggdrasil wristband and earrings that represent Hugin and Munin. I’m quite into it!
The type of religious folk you speak of are unfortunately common.
Because someone is telling you not to be. To be ashamed of it. Pride exists because of identity suppression and oppression. We are prideful, because we can not and should not be silenced. The society we were born and raised in says, “No, you shouldn’t like the same gender as yourself, that’s bad and unconventional and thus shameful - and we will take your rights away until you capitulate.”
Pride month is good. The only thing anybody should be ashamed of, is bigotry. I am prideful, of being transgender, of being a polyamorous -Yoink!- (why is that censored - I am WLW, is THAT censored??) - I am proud to exist the way I am, after decades of being told to just be quiet about it… but a lot of legislation is now trying to enforce that. “Don’t say gay”, a recently halted terrorist attack on pride in which 20+ guys were arrested, not to mention how many trans individuals are now being stripped of their medical care - and how many people running for office are pushing the idea we’re groomers or some crazy stuff.
For us to be silent is for us to accept the silencing.
“The primary job of my team is to build the software that our artists and designers use to make the game. We build the world editor, Grognok, the toolbox editor, Bonobo, and a chunk of the content pipeline system, among other things.”
Long answer - civility politics is a trap for us to bend to the whims of our oppressors and play by their rules. When you do this, social progress is guaranteed, basically, not to happen.
For progress to occur, rules must be broken and oppressors must be uncomfortable and beyond.
It seems to me that an employee from 343 accustomed with the term ‘Bonobo’ has used the tool kits editor’s name as a place holder for this emblem. In very bad taste which could cause offence to many. Probably out of their own selfish outlook…
However, I’m more worried about 343 covering up for the employee to save face of the company. Their reputation is not the best, apparently in the past which we all probably know that the way 343 is run, the culture, the attitude, the way they treat their staff, the way they treat their fan base, the way they treat their customers.
I have no doubt that they are feigning to save face. I personally would not stop short of an external investigation into this whole debacle.
It’s no different to the sexual harassment at Ubisoft. After all racial discrimination is a protected characteristic. This should not be tucked under the rug, as it will probably lead or could lead to further harassment if the truth isn’t found out.
The UNSC and more specifically the ONI branch has been turned into an authoritarian regime under 343i. Slow down. It’s not that simple. It’s where this is expressed in canon that makes it bumpy.
I haven’t seen Halo 5’s story all the way through so I don’t know if any implications or blunt impressions can come from that game, but the Hunt The Truth podcast that was released before the game as advertising was pretty much all about how the UNSC government was jailing people who try to expose them. This was part of the dynamic that was dropped when the Master Chief versus Locke was fumbled. I can personally attest that the first 7 novels published under Bungie do not make this a focus (Yes, I remember the insurrectionists.), but I don’t know about the stuff published under 343i. There’s a really good Bungie-era comic in The Halo Graphic Novel about a propaganda officer in a human city on Earth that touches upon this lightly.
I think 343i leaning into this element is why it comes up in the Halo TV show. My main worry about it is that it creates a sort of black-and-white, good-and-evil backdrop. The Hunt The Truth podcast used it to tell a good story so I won’t object to it there, but since everything shares the same canon it makes the series as a whole feel bloated. There’s a lovely lot of story potential here that will likely never be addressed in a mainline game.
You aren’t aware the UNSC is Fascist? What, with the existence of ONI - a department THEY created - that in turn, funded a SPARTAN program, which was made to kill other humans? Which was made to quell an insurgency?
Do you know why the Insurgency even happened?
Oh my goodness. Halo fans, they do not know the lore.
My sibling on the sacred ring, the independent colonies wanted to be independent and The UNSC would not let them. They wouldn’t allow colonial independence SO BADLY, they started killing people. The Insurgents felt that the core worlds and UEG/UNSC was exploiting their labor - and they were!
The insurgency was justified. Were their methods always? No, not at all…! But The UNSC literally responded by making Supersoldiers. Supersoldiers that had to be made by an unhinged scientist with a god complex (and yes, I am talking about the original Dr. Halsey here, she absoLUTELY has a God Complex), felt the ends who justified the means SO MUCH that she abducted literally hundreds of children, cloned them - who’s clones died and left grieving parents, for what! For subjugating colonies fighting for independence!!
Yes! The UNSC is FASCIST. The fact that they were the ONLY thing preventing The Covenant from killing Humanity, or that The SPARTAN II program JUST SO HAPPENED to be the only thing that actually worked against them - doesn’t stop or excuse their blatant fascism either…!
My goodness, you can see how the grudges STILL run deep in Halo 5 on Meridian. Even those UEG guys don’t want Spartans sniffing around!
So yes! The USNC has an extremely subjugative, fascist history where they committed SO MANY warcrimes to… Prevent independence.
tl;dr the UNSC is only the good guys because The Covenant, Banished, Storm, and Created, are so, so much worse.
Technically it already had the roots in Bungie’s era, but there were a looooooooooooooooooooot of different writers who did not see rebels in any good way or wrote them with ANY good justification. Most Innies were cartoon villains and it’s a really disingenuous way to look at things. But the roots were there.
I’m very glad that 343i has let that tree grow, because messages against fascism are good.
Saw this last night
343 is jinxed, this couldnt have been on purpose.
But if it was, yikes
As a person of color, a “moocher of reach”, screwed over on the 152 watchdog it will be the final straw pushing me to playstation.
Why does 343 hate me, lol
Its gotta be just horrible luck, and horrible QA.
If not, 343 needs to not control halo anymore.
I am well aware of Halo’s lore as I am an absolute fanatic on the subject. The UEG is and has always been Democratic Institution. The UNSC is subjected to the UEG. However, governments corrupt easily. (Especially democratic ones, just look at the disgrace that is the U.S.A.) Are we forgetting that the insurrectionists were literal terrorists? Did you read Contact Harvest? One of the first scenes is an Innie bombing a restaurant!
The Insurrection was not initiated by the UNSC. The URF started it themselves with their inability to find a peaceful solution. So instead like any barbarian they resorted to violence. Even then, the actual insidious behavior on behalf of the UNSC is relegated to departments such as ONI, or egotistical narcissists like Halsey. You tar thousands of heroic servicemen who died to save the species with the same brush as those criminals.
From what I read in your ad-hominem ridden posts, you seem to think fascism isn’t a political system, that it’s just using violence and “muh authoritarianism.” I hate to break it to you, but that isn’t the case. It is an intricate political system and ideology with ideas which are certainly questionable.
Had it not already been established it was a programming mistake? The name was a default text (the name of the software even, which was made by BUNGIE) which the engine reverted to when no data was entered. Are you seriously implicating that someone should lose their job for being in the wrong place at the wrong time? Everyone is entitled to a defense, no matter the “crime.” Even war criminals have defense attorneys.
