Joining in-progress games...

List your bad experiences with it here so something can hopefully be done about this.

EDIT: A seemingly simple and good solution to this problem could be to allow players to choose NOT to join in-progress games in their preferences. It would be set to JIP by default for those whom actually like this feature.
EDIT 2: It has been pointed out that if you try to prevent this issue from occuring by entering playlists with close to the correct number of players required for a full team, it will often just start the game with your side a player or two down.
Not only this but if you enter games with a full team requirement it has the chance to split your team if the other team needs the extra players. I thought team splitting is an issue that was put to sleep after H3?

I can deal with the other rather annoying things that have been changed for seemingly no good reason but THIS…

What were they thinking?

Such a crucial part of Halo has always been nailing that initial opening and so much of a game is determined from it. I understand that there is no longer a rush for weapons as there once was but the core idea still exists.

Not only this but we all know that any team in matchmaking with fewer players on it which is generally already losing. Forcing another player whom is just looking to find a nice even game with a competitive opening onto a losing team DOES NOT HELP the situation.

On top of this, I have been repeatedly forced back into games which I have left for this exact reason after restarting the search in hope of finding an actual game. Being placed onto the same team of the same game 3 times in a row… do I really have to explain what is wrong with that?

Of all the CoD-like annoyances this game has brought, this one is irritating me the most.

Anyone agree?

A lot of people do. Worst change in the game.

I agree.

That’s all I ever find now.

Or I end up in 4v1s

An entire team of 4 versus me and NO ON JOINS IN PROGRESS, so what the heck is with that?

Absolutely. Because of JIP, Matchmaking is quite happy to pair uneven teams. At no point should it be okay to start a game a man down or worse.

FFA is similar. I’ve jumped into Regicide games when the lead is on 120+. Ridiculous.

and if you are someone who care about stats, like most of us, joining a losing team really hurts my wins-lose spread. Out of anything else in the game, I want this to be changed the most. Like the poster said, the beggining rush, is crucial.

Also the assualt riffle needs a nerf.
whats the point of choosing a percision weapon if we can just mow people down from med range.

but

i do like the game
and cant wait for updates

(patches and new maps/gametypes)

thanks for the hard work 343

(another gripe and i know it sounds crazy but, the lobby post carnage jumps to a new game way too fast, and i would prefer to find a new team then just stick with the team i just had to carry. )

I disagree. I HATED being left on my own on my team and having to endure the rest of the game solo because I refused to be another one of those people who left after one flag capture, etc.

I don’t understand why anybody would want to bring that back.

Not to mention, once your in that game, you can stay in the lobby for the next game from the start.

I see it as reinforcements. Even if I do lose after hot joining a game at least I tried, doesn’t really matter if I lost, I still enjoy playing.

Is losing that much of a big deal… it’s a game, is your win/loss ratio honestly that precious to you?

Hot joining, is NOT a “CoD” like feature, it’s always been in FPS’s.

I have never understood why people who are the last person left in a game feel the need to play it out instead of just quitting and searching for another, evenly matched game. Those people should not force others onto their losing team to create un-enjoyable conditions for them as well. The loss isn’t the thing here, it’s the fact that you are thrown into circumstances which you can’t entirely grasp without being there since the beginning and you are put at a disadvantage instead of an EQUAL PLAYING FIELD which is exactly what made Halo the classic that it is.

Instead of just a few people having to endure a poor matchmaking experience because their teammates left, now everybody is subjected to it when they click “find a game.” It’s one thing to join a team that is losing terribly, but it’s another when the opposing team is completely set up in the best parts of the map with power weapons. The reason JIP can work in CoD is because there are no power weapons to work or fight for. Everybody has the same things and you can just hit the ground running while being on even footing even if your team is down a lot of points. That isn’t the case in Halo, at all.

JIP also makes matchmaking rely on it. It pairs uneven teams instead of waiting for more players to join because it just expects people to join, as somebody else has already pointed out. I don’t think I need to go into detail about why this is such a bad idea. I’m sure they could tweak this specifically instead of doing away with JIP, but it needs to be tweaked sooner than later.

Once the 1-50 ranking system is put into place, I can’t imagine JIP sticking around for ranked playlists because of how heavily it’s influenced by wins/losses. Joining a team that’s about to lose will only bring down your rank, and so will quitting out of the game to avoid the loss. There’s no winning there.

Excellent post, Crossfade.

Im glad they did this. I got so tired of people leaving the match and not getting any new people cuz of not having this feature. Why should a team lose most of its players at the beginning and have to deal with a major handicap for the rest of the match? That is limited.

I understand people dont like it because it will throw you into matches that have no chance of winning, but stats are not everything. I know a lot of people think stats mean everythig but they dont. Why should your stats take priority over a team that is at a big disadvantage. Talk about selfish.

I completely agree. There is nothing more frustrating than just getting thrown into a game that is currently in progress. I feel completely disoriented when this happens. I’ve always considered Halo one of the most competitive games but with JIP, it really kills the competitiveness by forcing players into negative situations. Plus there is nothing more satisfying than clinching a 1v4 victory after your team quits/lags out.

This is one of the worst changes imo. The thing in previous halo’s where you could not get another teammate to join was ok because of the fact you could actually win games that were uneven to an extent. But in halo4 they might just add in another random person who doesnt know how the game is progressing and gets demolished because of lack of info.

Why should I be forced to quit a game that I have queued to join, voted for, loaded in, because a couple of really bad losers quit out of the game.

I play because I enjoy playing, not because I’m concerned about my win/loss ratio, I’d rather finish a game that I started with some reinforcements and actually try to turn it around, than have other people “force” their impatient quitting on me. It works both ways.

@Crossfade.

Very good post, and actually raised a few points that I hadn’t considered.

JIP does need tweaking, heavily, but if it is kept in, ranking should be less concerned with win/losses and more about your personal contribution to the game, taking everything into account.

And an open question.

The only real alternative to JIP is punishing people who leave, which A) Has never really helped. and B) Why should you punish somebody for playing (or not playing) a game.

Unless you can suggest another feasible solution to people leaving the game, without unbalancing it?

I thought I saw in a preview video that you could set in your profile whether or not to join games in progress.

I personally dont mind it. Having half the players quit at start because they didn’t like what game mode was being forced down their throats was way worse.

The other system was not perfect by any means but it was miles better than this.

Another example - just played a game which I was FORCED INTO. 2-0 CTF. Two players down. You can guess what happened.

Due to some of the points raised here I decided to wait it out and see if I could get a better game the next by playing with the same party.

Instead, 4 of the players which I had been forced to play with LEFT, leaving me by myself. Any player knows that this is not a desireable or enjoyable situation so I did what I should have done in the first place. Quit.

They need this feature unless they reinstate the quit ban from Reach. The quitters are out in full force already.

This is annoying me already, needless losses because of getting put into games where I’m already losing. It just happened when I was in a full 4 as well, we got put into a game where all 4 had obviously quit, and the score was like 400-20, I didn’t think that was possible but it clearly is.

I am also sick of joining losing games, but at the same time I did not enjoy playing with fewer players due to leavers in Halo 3 etc etc.

My solution? Allow friends of the players to join in that game if there is an available space but do NOT add people searching through matchmaking. Maybe even a filter to select JIP?

At least give the OPTION of allowing players to choose whether they wish to JIP games or not. This seems like a good solution to me. I don’t care about matchmaking times as long as I can play a real game.
