Join in progress is a system implemented into Halo 4 with only good intentions, but like most new systems, there are some inherent flaws that need addressing. When joining a game already in progress, the player does not have any information regarding the map/ gametype/ score/ time remaining/ etc., and is thrust into the game without any say in the matter. It’s because of this that players will often groan and roll their eyes whenever they’re thrown into these situations due to potentially joining a lost cause of a game.
My suggestion to improve this system would be to have a prompt pop up saying something along the lines of…
Joining Infinity Capture the Flag
Map: Adrift
Time Remaining: 9:47
Score: Red 1 vs Blue 0
Joining: Blue Team
Joining in… 10 Seconds Press B to cancel
This way the player will know what type of situation they’re getting into, and should they not like what they see, they could just hit the B button. I would like to see this type of system used in future titles should the join in progress system become a mainstay in the Halo franchise. So what do you guys think?
Also full parties should NEVER be thrown into a join in progress system. Very often, players in a full party are split up when joining a game in progress… I hate that so much!!!
Because I do not wish to play Slayer Pro I try to back out of all JiP now on Infinity Slayer as like you said you have no idea what game or map it is until load-out selection!
I did not mind so much JiP when it was just Infinity Slayer & would very rarely back out in the Lobby but now I have just backed out of 5 JiP Lobbys in a row & still waiting on starting a game hence why I am in this forum at the same time as playing Halo.
This is a great idea. That along with the option of flat out turning JiP off would make H5 a hell of a lot more enjoyable. The people who don’t mind JiP will be able to see what they’re about to be dropped into and have the option of declining, and people who don’t like it at all could just turn it off.

I shake your hand on this idea and anymore constructive ideas. In my post about JIP some one made a very good point or suggestion. A lobby for the players who leaves a game in play and players who are just signing on to play. When the amount of players are there for whatever game time they get placed into a new game. Thats too is a good idea.

This does sound like a good idea also tho not sure it would be practical.
My solution is having an option not to JIP at all. So if you’re going into games by yourself, you can turn OFF JIP so that you only go into games from the start of them.
Also as a party leader you could turn off JIP. This would get rid of those pesky games where your team is split, or you JIP a game that’s clearly OVER (or should be).
I understand 343 wanting to get people into more games faster. Still, there should be that option for those of us who don’t mind (and would rather) wait for a new game.
My last game of infinity slayer:
I’m waiting for a game to load so I browse the forums. When I find a game, it’s a join in progress! Too late to back out. Then, the score is no more than 1 kill for players. It’s a 2v4 match! And the the enemy team has the power weapons! Rocket launchers, needless, snipers. Those who think that because the score is low it’s okay? Well by the time you join, the enemy team might have all the power weapons. And how is that your fault? So it’s slayer pro, no motion tracker. This means I can get swarmed by their teammates and not know it while they have the power weapons. My team mate had a microphone. It’s matchmaking, slayer pro, does he communicate? No. If was on opus. So many forge maps. I ended up getting 20 kills 25 deaths. Second place, the lead had 300 points 16 kills, 6 deaths. I as 265 points. I had 4 assists he had 2.
This was my last experience with infinity slayer playlist. Some of these problems go in different threads but look at how tied everything can be.
So yes, if we could hear a BEEP and then be able to press B to abort, that’d be nice. Audible cue too. Sometimes I’m doing other stuff while it searches, which is one of the things the Xbox one seems to have something for.
Join in progress isn’t inheritenly bad, in fact, ordinance drops aren’t. It’s how they implement them.
I’m glad other people on these boards like this idea! Hopefully someone from 343i staff will read this and keep this suggestion in their heads for when it comes time to revamp the system.
Also, I added Map to the original post. I kind of forgot to put it in there the first time around. All of that info is pretty important when deciding to join the game or not. Hope you guys read this, 343!

That is what I do browse the forums while waiting for a game to start & kabam I am now in a JiP & cant back out before it starts lol
hmmmm I wonder if I posted this in the wrong section of these forums. If a monitor is reading this, could you move this topic over to the “Matchmaking” section of these boards? I think that might be a more appropriate area to have this discussion, and potentially a better area for 343i staff to read this thread as well. Unless of course there’s a way for me to move this thread over there myself. I’m fairly new here, so I’m pretty unaware of my limitations as a poster thus far x.x!

You posted it in the right place to get responses (the other sections are relatively dead). Mods will move it if needs be but trust that this’ll get much more attention here.
I don’t agree with you OP, and here’s why:
The vast majority of quits are from the losing team, so if you’re JIP’d 80% of the time or so a player seeing your message is gonna hit B.
And the other 20% of the time, the team they are joining doesn’t need them because they’re already winning despite being players down.
To me, JIP is never meant to benefit the individual joining the game. It might, if they happen to join the winning team, but that is a side-effect rather than the intended benefit.
The intended benefit is to give the losing team a chance to get back in the game.
If I’m winning the game with only 2 other players on my team, tbh I don’t want anyone joining, they’re just going to take 1/4 of the kills from us.
Its when I’m losing with only 2 teammates that I’m praying for someone to JIP.
And that is why IMO JIP should be forced on players.
Its never intended to benefit the joining player, its intended to benefit the team that is down. If anything, its the team you are joining that should get to vote for you not to join.
I also bet that everyone in this thread who is for this idea, is against JIP. I doubt anyone who believes in the benefits of JIP would agree with this idea.
I agree that join in progress is not meant to benefit the individuals joining the game, but I do not like the idea of forcibly penalizing those same players through this system. If I was about to join a game in which I see that I would only be down by 1 flag cap, 8 kills, 20 seconds in oddball, etc. then I wouldn’t mind joining the game. This is especially the case when I spend an excessive amount of time searching for a game. However, the opposite side of this would be if I saw that I would be down by 20+ kills or 60+ seconds in oddball, I would have the option to say no to that situation, which I think is very reasonable. Sure some players will mash the B button regardless of what the score is, but those players will have to also deal with longer matching periods between games.
So while I understand what you’re saying, I still firmly believe that players should have an information spreadsheet of sorts, on the match they are potentially about to join. If it looks ok, there’s not much of a reason to not join. However, if it looks like doom and gloom, why should that player be subjected to joining a losing match?
Thank you for your viewpoint though, much appreciated for a better conversation on the matter!
So basically what we had in Reach where we could see the game details when joining a party but with JiP this time?
> I’d prefer no JiP. Although it is highly frustrating when team-mates quit out, it is even more aggravating when you are JiP’d into games, especially when it is onto the losing team.
>
> The only way JiP could ever work would be if you are put into a lobby when someone has quit out of the lobby before the game has begun, that way you can never be put into a game that has already started.
Cancelling out of JiP’d games doesn’t help the team that is down a player or more, just like quitting out of JiP games. What I suggested would mean that no game would start unbalanced, but quitting would need to bring a more severe penalty.
The amount of join in progress right now is way too high.
About our games in a row it tries to put Me in join in progress. I do the trick to abort and it keeps doing it. And just as I type that, again. So make it five times in a row.
I’m trying to get to CSR-50 here I infinity slayer. It’d be nice if it would stop putting me into join in progress games where the enemy team can have the power weapons already or my team mates/them more points.

Ugh.
I do hate it sometimes when someone proves a idea I support to be completely wrong, oh well, well done, good analysis.
Still, it would be nice if players still got a little heads up on what they are getting into when they are in the process of joining.
