I feel like I can speak for some of the classic fans when I say Johnson having mechs makes no sense.
I believe he should instead have classic vehicle and infantry upgrades. Here are a few suggestions:
Orion Marines (upgrade to Marines): Spartan ls, like Johnson himself. This was added in after Orion Drop
SpLaser Cyclops (upgrade): Give the Cyclops a Spartan Laser. Because insert “Regret” speech here, that’s why.
(???) Hog: Though not a classic, a Rocket Hog would make more sense than the Mantis. Plus this gives us the opportunity to have Rocket Hogs. Alternatively, a beefed up Gauss Hog with more benefits than the standard or a Troop Carrier Hog would make sense for him.
Classic Scorpion: The Halo CE Scorpion. Maybe let you put Infantry on it.
Gunship Pelican: Remember Halo 2’s Pelican Gunship that shot the Scarab on the second or third mission? Yeah… Give it to him as a unit with the ability to carry a squad/vehicle. He already has Pelican Transport, but those don’t fire at the enemy and it has its own unique advantages over Gunships (namely being free on the second upgrade, fast, and good for escapes/scouting)
Gauss Hornet: A Hornet… But with auto-Gauss cannons instead of machine guns.
Orion Drop (replaces Mech Overdrive): Drops in Veteran Orion Project Marines (essentially middle ground between ODSTs and Spartans)
Troop Bay (Nightingale upgrade): Turns the Nightingale into a flying garrison.
Digging In Deep is “meh” imo, but it doesn’t necessarily not fit his character.
An ultimate that’s useful could help him out a lot too.

Truth. Maybe something like a mass Flood infection as a callback to when the parasite failed to devour him.
Or maybe an Orion Battlegroup. Something good. I didn’t come up with one in the OP because Digging In Deep, while fairly useless, doesn’t go against his character in the way the Mantis/Colossus does.
Just…make…the…Colossus…faster. Christ they can give a giant Hula Hoop and I wouldn’t care but this vehicle is way too slow.

I’m sorry OP, but there’s no way a rework of Johnson is going to happen. He has already been released, but maybe you could add that idea to the leader’s concept thread under a new leader.

Agreed, the colossus just needs a speed buff or make its range as long as they made it out to be during its tease.
Yes, let’s replace the mantis with a vehicle that’s worthless like the Warthog. You’re asking for a complete graphical and unit wise rework, that’s not going to happen and there’s not even a guarantee that this would fix him at all, having more upgrades for units should be on all leaders not just some.
I think Johnsons biggest weakness is not having tanks and not having drops. I feel like not having drops should be the standard for all leaders, drops make no sense. The only ones I feel are balanced are ODST, suicide grunts, and Cyclops Drop from cutter. All the rest of the drops are an easy cheap army replenish mechanic that shouldn’t be in the game. In my opinion.

Take away the veterancy on the drops. I always thought that was so messed up. Multiple units having Veterancy and buffs.
