Well, these two characters never got to meet up in Halo 2, so let’s give them the opportunity to meet. In a fight to the death.
Fight takes place on the platform where Mercy dies.
Fight 1: Chief with Mark VI with Carbine and Duel SMGs (Halo 2 era chief) vs Tartarus with the Fist of Rukt.
fight 2: Chief with GEN II MJORNIR, his AR with kinetic bolts and energy bayonet, a magnum and Railgun. Tartarus has his uncle’s armour, a Brute shot, his hammer and a Spiker.
In each fight the Chief and Tartarus gets three Frag grenades and two spike grenades, respectively.
if Tartarus has his overshield from halo 2 then Tartarus wins because you couldn’t defeat him without taking his shield out with a beam rifle.
if no overshield then chief can win especially if Thel took him down.
I think in either fight, the Fist of Rukt is the one thing that puts this in favor of Tartarus. That is a devastating weapon that is very hard to counter. With the ranged abilities and the devastating melee potential. In addition to the apparent energy shield it seems to be able to generate, Chief would have a hard time going toe to toe with Tartarus. However, that Railgun would do some damage for sure if Chief had a preemptive strike.
The lore says Brutes can be just as fast as Spartans and that they are physically superior. However, what Brutes lack in grace, Spartans make up for in fighting ability.
The lore also says that it before Tartarus was defeated, he inflicted a disproportionate number of hostile casualties before he was finally able to be taken down. While it is true that the Arbiter’s forces bested Tartarus in battle, the numerical advantage heavily favored The Arbiter. If we consider Elites and Spartans to be roughly equal in overall combat ability, then it would be fair to say that a single Spartan would struggle with a single Brute.
It is interesting you mention the grenades, however. When MC went toe to toe with a Brute, he actually was able to defeat the Brute by strapping a frag grenade to his belt. I think it is worth mentioning.
Despite this, I would be more tempted to give this to Tartarus.
I agree that it would be a very tough fight for Master Chief. But I think the grenades would give him an advantage. I remember multiple examples in the books of Spartans making amazing grenade throws. MC could stick those spike grenades right where he wants them.

Yeah Tartarus wins unless chief has a beam rifle and even then tartarus would squish him before he would get a chance for a lucky shot
I guess that’s why the Chief managed to prevent Cortana from “dying” (quote end quote) in Halo 4 right? Oh, wait.
How about when the Chief fought that Elite in Halo: Legends The Package. He kicked that Elite’s -Yoink- didn’t he? Oh wait, he didn’t. What about the Didact? Had to drop a Halo on top of him, but that didn’t stop the Didact from killing Black Team or getting him and his entire team from being beat up by a single Forerunner.
What I’m trying to say is that the Chief isn’t invincible.
How is Chief winning. It took Arbiter (Who’s better than MC) Stg. Johnson, and a -Yoink- ton of elite zealot to take down Tartarus. Stop being biased fanboys.
Agreed. Can somebody please at least put up an argument for the Chief other than “Chief wins because he’s awesome”? I know one person on this thread has, but everyone else is going “oh Chief wins because he’s the Chief and a Spartan”. At least make a good argument please.
