So, I dunno if I’ve introduced myself yet, but just in case hi, I’m D. Anyway, I know it says I’ve played 1 Halo game, or 2 of them or whatever. But this is actually like my 3rd xbox account and I’ve played 1 through 4 and all of the off-shoots and read several books and virtually every corner of Halopedia. But I digress, what I found recently reading up on Serin Osman, was that John-117 ‘teased’ Serin Osman for eating leftovers or whatever. Now I’ve never read the Kilo-Five trilogy, so I have no idea what this means and was hoping someone could clear this up for me. Was he playfully teasing her or cruelly bullying her? If its the latter I don’t think I like Master Chief anymore, but that depends . . . would be awesome if someone could explain this that’s read the book or post a transcript or something.
Chief was a bit of a jerk as a kid. It’s also been noted he stole another kid’s crackers during a lesson, and was not a team player. That said, that was before most of his training. People are often very different when they are kids.

Exactly. William-043 was said to be a jokester before he matured.
I used to be a crude, foul mannered brat, but now I’m taller. People change.
I don’t see how a kid stealing crackers makes him a jerk,lol.

How does a kid stealing crackers not make him a jerk?

It was from his fellow students. It’s not like he was stealing from the supply.
I knew the context of the statement and still find it to be a harsh one. That’s expected of kids. I’d call him a jerk if he was stealing everyone’s food on a consistent basis and dumping it in the toilet.
this escalated from serious to funny quickly…
john wasn’t a jerk as a child, impetus as children are at 7. In their first training exercise, John was grouped with fellow trainees Kelly and Samuel in a game of “Ring the Bell”. John rushed ahead of his teammates and crossed the finish line first; however, he was stunned to learn that his team had lost, as Kelly and Sam came last. This taught John the importance of teamwork.
one of the lines that best described his personality is “No one’s being left behind. We’re going to figure a way to get all of us out.” this was at the age of 8 he saw every child in the program as a comrade.
John only teased Serin and her habit of eating leftovers from meals of the other candidates. we could assume this as john coming from a loving home and not knowing Serin grew up on the streets, not knowing where her next meal was coming from and would just see it as a bizarre quirk. seeing as Serin didnt even recall we can also assume it was innocent.
Chief was probably cocky as a kid lol
I’m actually interested what kind of conversation Serin and John would have, and maybe other S-IIs

not really in all the books i read that depicted him as a child, the common quality is that he wanted to win in doing so he would inherently be one of the best in the class. he didn’t really show any pride in being the best he just liked winning
John :“Can you tell me, Dr. Halsey? Just this time? How do I win?”
Halsey : “I’ll tell you how to win, John. You have to survive.”
age 14 prior to augmentation procedures.
This makes me remember the “Cheeky Chief” line from Arby 'n the Chief.
Actually, his incessant drive to win not only disproves the “cocky” theory, it entirely contradicts it. If John thought of himself as above or superior to the others in anyway, he’d be less motivated, lackadaisical and apathetic toward the Spartan exercises, and have practically no drive at all. This drive shows he wants desperately to improve himself and that he may even be afraid of failure due to something that happened in his childhood (hopefully one day we’ll find out what).

Haha, totally.
Back to the main topic, I believe that Osman taking the scraps left over is not only a look into her past, but also a glimpse into her future, taking over for Parangosky as Director of ONI. Just my thought on things, and quite a bit of a stretch because they’re mentioned in two separate books.
I’m sure it was nothing more than one child pointing out something weird about another child at the time. I don’t think John meant any actual harm but this intrigued me reading it for the first time the fact that Serin even remembers that much shows it probably bothered her a lot as a kid though. Love Osman one of my favorite 343i era characters very insecure and human woman.

I chuckled. Thanks for the laugh.
