January Update is live

Get after it
I thought the update was great. Sure, it didn’t actually reveal much new (specific) information, but it had some hints and teasers in there. Pretty much exactly what we should expect for a game that is almost a year from release.

I certainly appreciated the commentary on what the sandbox team is trying to accomplish. Their goals for (and approach to tuning) each piece of the sand box feel about right for a halo game. Also, after the introductions, I had a small tinge of jealousy that my childhood dreams of becoming a video game designer never went anywhere.

Probably the only part that made me wonder was when it was mentioned how you can earn equipment, that sounds an awful lot like a kill streak kind of system, which I don’t think would be received well. Having said that, we don’t have any information on how it works, so I’ll withhold judgment

I wouldve liked to of seen vehicles or a vehicle. Like the ghost, just like the Hydra it has a toy after it and wasnt in the gameplay trailer. Honestly i just want see something vehicular related.
The Hydra was really nice to see same for the close up needler. Can’t wait for the 25th Feb for update 2.

Here’s where I’m at with this latest update:

1. "In multiplayer, equipment is earned via combat and/or scavenging the playspace which brings a level of fairness and competition to the experience."

What does this mean exactly? How is equipment “earned” through combat? Is it possible that killing Spartans who are carrying equipment can be dropped and therefore picked up or something else?

2. "One of my favorite sandbox items is a vehicle that we haven’t shown yet, but I’m sure I won’t be alone with my favoritism once we do reveal it to the community. This vehicle isn’t totally brand new, but it has received a fresh coat of paint while awaiting its triumphant return to Halo."

What do you think this is? Clearly it’s making its “return” so its something we’ve been at the helm of before. My guess…GET TO THA CHOPPA!!!

3. "…an equipment item we haven’t shown yet. It’s highly physics-based, has TONS of interactions across our sandbox, and will leave you laughing or yelling, “Did you see that?!” Proper timing is everything with this equipment, and if you position correctly, you could very well send your enemies flying!"

What do you guys think this is? Possibly deployable grav-lift?

4. "This new vehicle will sit nicely between the Warthog and the Scorpion in terms of power level so it should ignite some new discussions on what vehicle to take to a mission."

I’ve played HW1 and HW2 but its been so long that I can’t really think of the vehicles that could fall into this category. Of course it could be a vehicle not in either of those games…

Everything else was pretty standard stuff/what I expected when I saw sketch’s post earlier this week. I think the community might get pretty divided if point #1 is ANYTHING similar to H4 call-in drops/COD killstreak drops. Really hoping its standard equipment that is picked up on the map and then dropped if killed before it is used.

I would like to assume the the first point of “earned through combat” is by robbing the equipment off of my opponent’s corpse rather than any REQ drops. I’m pretty sure that’s what it is…right?

I can only hope…it would also lead me to believe that things like overshield and active camo can be carried and not instantly activated upon picking the equipment up. That is a pretty sweet idea if that is the case!

That’s actually something I haven’t thought about. A very interesting concept indeed. That could certainly change the dynamic of a combat encounter.

Opponent gets you to one shot. Sneak behind cover real quick, pop the OS. That’s a real reversal of fate haha. That could be pretty cool.

> - To abide by the Lone Wolf principle means that we must provide the player with the necessary items and features to empower them to be effective on their own. Teamwork will augment the experience, but we need to ensure that the player can feel powerful on their own. One way that we achieve this is by looking at designing, tuning, and balancing the starting loadout for players in multiplayer. The basic traits, tools, and weapons must allow the player to be effective from the moment they spawn without the need to scavenge for “good” weapons.

Bold - So are they pretty much confirming that there’s loadouts in multiplayer??? Or are they referring to the starting weapon, there “loadout” that a player starts with in multiplayer?

If loadouts are back, I won’t be impressed at all!

“The” starting loadout. Not “a” starting loadout. They know H4 MP was bad… they’d never bring back custom loadouts.

Starting load out =/= load outs.
They are referring to AR or BR starts. Does the player start with one or two grenades. That sort of thing.

Edit: Wow, qlimm and I were in sync with our replies there.

New equipment: probably a nade or victim operated mine or command detonated munition with a low relative effectiveness factor that pushes (launches) rather than cuts (kills).

New vehicle: Infantry fighting vehicle or infantry carrier vehicle like a Bradley or Stryker that is designed to drop off a squad of infantry and then fight or provide them support by fire with a machine gun and 25- or 30-mm main gun and possibly a TOW (wire-guided missile).

Returning vehicle: Banished chopper.

I personally don’t like that. I love the way overshields functioned in 3 for example where as soon as you get them there’s a tiny period of invincibility while they charge, and that means timing of when they’re picked up is important. Being able to activate one mid battle because you picked it up earlier seems broken to me, but I’m happy to be proven wrong.

Ok I thought so too, but thought I should ask. Want to make sure I was reading that right. I must of read it a few times but I needed clarity lol

Unrelated note, I’m really not liking the commando weapon look. It just doesn’t look like Halo to me at all. I also just don’t feel like it’s necessary really but whatever… we’ll see.

I’m definitely liking how we can map our buttons now on the controller. Long overdue!!

I like how when they adressed the Bulldog, they said it inspired community discussion because of it’s ‘cool new attributes’. But to be honest, the main thing that has caused people to talk about the bulldog, is how it replaces the Classic Shotgun.
The way they said that really made them sound tone-deaf to people’s concerns.
It’s especially annoying that the classic shotgun won’t be in at launch, when you consider the fact that the Bulldog won’t be a power weapon. They could have had both shotguns, the Bulldog as a non power weapon, and the classic, shotgun as a rare power weapon.
It’s such a shame really, the classic shotgun is my favorite Halo weapon of all time, particularly the CE/3 version. But no, for some strange reason, it won’t be in this game, at least not at launch. Even if it is added In later that still means we have to wait to use one of the most iconic weapons in Halo’s history.

These echo my thoughts perfectly. Halo without the OG Shotgun?? Why!? Nabbing that gun on Lockout or Guardian and wreaking havoc was so fun.

"WE CREATE WEAPONS, VEHICLES, PLAYER MECHANICS, AND SYSTEMS THAT ARE INTUITIVE AND REWARD PLAYER MASTERY. " -Vision Statement.
Does the last part reward master refer to commendations?
Halo 5 had that but you got REQ packs. Now that we know there is no randomization, is it possible the rewards can be unique armors, coatings, or skins. Halo 4 did grant Armor with different coatings. I’m happy with that statement overall. Super exited for more next month, this is what we need.

I’d say the reward is being better than players who haven’t mastered the sandbox, or at least that’s how it reads to me. It refers to weapons and sandbox elements having a low skill floor and a high skill ceiling which they mentioned elsewhere in the article.

^This.

they mentioned halo3 on the “equipment” aspect

Pretty disappointing… I dont think any of the questions ske7ch asked were what I would have asked. Oh well.

Giant wall of boilerplate text.

Like sitting through a seminar on paint drying or grass growing.

Been playing and on the forums for decades now.

This is the longest most self inflicted dryspell of community engagement in Halo history.

There has been no movement in the canon of halo post H5 for so -Yoink!- long. Shadows of Reach was well written, but if moved the needle about 1mm. Cool Atriox is coming. Couldn’t have seen that coming.~ glad to pay for a book to get that nugget.

So what if you got your corpo fee fees hurt by people not liking craig graphics. The story is king in halo, so why neglect it so bad.

Please in the next update a month from now (sweet more months), talk about the story, for F sake.

So frustrated by the updates for the last six years. Like listening to a retail worker tell you their out of stock, who won’t turn around to look for stock you can clearly see in the cabinet behind them.
