And if anyone even mentions Johnny Depp, Imma smack a -Yoink-.
The Kig-Yar were often said to be of pirate ancestry. Even in 2553, piratical traits can still be observed in their kind; Kilo-Five found humans on Venezia willing to socialize and even trade with former Covenant subjects, particularly the Jackals (see Sav Fel on Halopedia). And then there was the whole Rubble shenanigan, as seen in The Cole Protocol.
So, in Halo X1, pirate tendencies should show through in the Jackals; some should be seen wielding non-Covenant weapons, like the Battle Rifle or a Boltshot (though all should be capable of switching weapons), and perhaps some should be wearing bits and pieces of Marine armor (like Skirmishers, if they should return). In addition, should Insurrectionists finally make their long-awaited appearance, they should be seen fighting alongside Jackals, and possibly Grunts. Maybe Brutes. Actually, probably Brutes; Innies, Jackals/Skirmishers, and Brutes could be another faction by themselves, like the Scientologists and Necromorphs in Dead Space 3.
So that was a mess of ideas. Does anyone like them?

Yeah, a few select Brutes in the last level of Halo 2 carried shotguns.
I think it would be a neat idea to have missions that featured only one type of alien, like a Jackal Pirate Ship or a Grunt Metropolis. That way the individual races of Covenant could be highlighted and maybe fleshed out on-screen a little.
This would especially fit into a game where Master Chief is wandering the galaxy looking for information. I’d like to fight my way from a seedy Grunt dance club and through local security forces on the streets to get to the closest spaceport. Then I’m off to interrogate a Jackal pirate captain.
