Ive won 3 of my last 21 ranked matches

I always feel like the match is close and then the other team clutches up, likely because theyre in a squad communicating and they can always raise their game. I imagine when I do win, its a rare balanced match or im on a team who are partied up. Anyway, people communicating should be paired with people communicating. I would say its more important than a players mmr. So I say focus more on party sizes and less on mmr.

There is a weighting for squads - and how long they have been playing together.

but 3/21 is a bad run. Sorry.

the weighting isnt very good then because whenever i check it on halo tracker, someone always has a bigger party. they are obviously prioritising connection over matchmaking which is fine but party size more important than mmr

And I wouldn’t be surprised if something has gone wrong with the algorithm since the recent reset.

In my placement game I copped the same squad five times - four of them in a row. Which is very odd behaviour for the match maker.

It didn’t help that this team was 2x Onyx players, a Gold Smurf, and their token Silver for diluting their opponents rank.

We (randoms) got thrashed pointlessly. Like CTF 5-0 thrashed.

In the first game they capped the first two flags in like, under a minute.

Frustrating. But then again… random numbers and all…

yep since the update, feels impossible to win unless i get lucky teammates partied together. my win ratio is creeping down.

I’d question if that is even possible…

if theyyre partied up, theyre communicating or atleast have chemistry. theyyre mmr will give a rough indication how well they could ccmmunicate and thats all mmr is good for in my eyes. players should havve differrent hidden mmrs for different squad sizes. Trying to get perfect mmr matching while partie sizes are not matched is a waste of time.

parties skill should equal enemie parties skiill too. if there is one onyx on his own and 3 plats in a party then a match would have to be an onyx on its own and something like gold, plat and diamond to match the 3 plats party or whatever combination. However, i wouldnt be surprised if 343 matches a gold on his own and a onyx partied with plat and diamond communiicating. That would only be acceptable if everyone has mics enabled.

TrueSkill2 adds a weighting for squads, how long they have been running, and form.

The difficulty of this is that’s it’s unfair for the Gold player who is dragged in to match. They would much rather play in their own Gold weighted match.

A much better solution would be to put a limit on skill ranges in squads. Make it so you have to be within a couple of tiers to team up.

And keep in mind too that mics enabled isn’t necessarily helpful.

For every inspirational Captain America there are at least 10 heavy breathing, chip munching, hip-op fans, that are too buys spewing misogynist, racist insults to actually make a good call.

And one guy I had last week tried to take control but his instructions were vague and not very helpful. “Everyone head to the big round thingy next”, or “there’s a one shot over there!”, “go to the next base”. He got increasing mad that we couldn’t tell what he wanted and rage quit.

Sadly with the very small player base left in the game you would be waiting a long time more to find a match if this was to happen.

Alternatively though they should do what (I believe) CoD 4 did back in the day where if you queued for Search and Destroy it forced you to stay in game chat at all times so you could at LEAST hear callouts.

yes but if matched correctlly, the other team should also have a guy who is bad at callouts too which will likely reflect his skill at the game.

This is a terrible idea, and I’ll give an example as to why.

I have been playing Halo in all its forms since 2001. Some of my friends are brand new to the franchise. Our skill levels are wildly varied due to the amount of experience we have playing Halo in general. They are also real friends that I hang out with regularly. Halo has become another way for us to bond and become closer friends in real life by giving us even more shared interests.

What you propose would make it impossible for my lower ranked real life friends to enjoy playing together. Games exist to bring people together under the unified joy of play. To make it so competitive as to remove this fundamental aspect of what gaming should be about would be a real tragedy.

Sometimes Fireteams will have wildly different Rank levels in them. The game needs to be fine tuned to balance out these discrepancies, not segregate the population into tier classes.

Bronze to Onyx, we are all gamers and should be able to play with whomever we choose.

Not so much.

Lots of people have suggested it… particularly in the threads on ranking abuse.

And apparently lots of other games have limitations.

We, are of course, just talking about ranked.

Ok. Not sure why that matters. But if it does… so have I.

Social.

Which I could almost live with - except for Smurfs and squad manipulations.

Which seem to be increasing in frequency.

Some sort of rank qualification would go a long way to fixing both.

Again social.

And customs. Our group varies from Bronze to Onyx and we struggled for a while in Halo 5 to have balanced customs.

Scripting made a huge difference. We had games set up where your shields increased depending on how far off the lead you where. It was a bit tricky to get right - but made a huge difference. Suddenly we could have FFA and everyone could have fun!

And games where only designated players could pick up the OS.

Hoping to do a lot more with Infinite’s improved scripting. My first project will be a game that awards points based on the K/D of your kill (multiplied by 10). And when you spawn with a K/D less than certain levels you will get weapons, OS, and/or camo depending on how far you’ve slipped.

Tbh id just like the tsnking to be based of the ranks and not a hidden MMR.

I haven’t even played since the reset, i dont get the point when as unranked i verse onyx and when placed D1 i still verse onyx.

My whole ranked experience has been versing already oynx players. While i do well in the matches i dont get the point if im not gradually versing better players.

If im D1 i want to verse D1, i shouldn’t see onyx till im onyx. Pointless having ranks if im going off a hidden mmr.

Your rank is a gaussian curve; with a mean and a standard deviation.

After placement your CSR is 3x standard deviations below your mean.

The system is essentially saying it is 98% confident that your actual rank is higher than this.

But matchmaking uses the mean of the curve to match you.

That is why you come out of placement at with a CSR lower than your actual rank. Your skill curve is wide enough to go from D1 and well into Onyx - hence the quality of your opponents.

As your ranking curve matures it narrows and becomes taller. Your standard deviation falls so that -3xSD is much closer to the mean. The system is now much more confident in your rank.

Match-making tightens up against your rank - so you get closer and closer games. Which along with the narrowness of your curve makes your rank harder to shift (up or down). It will take a long sustained effort to rank up.

Yeah but that puts me off, there are people out there who barely versed onyx players to get to onyx so why does my journy need to be such a pain in comparison.

Since D1 was the highest having to climb through every rank as a solo versing oynx and oynx teams sucked the fun out of it.

There was nothing to accomplish for me, im already versing onyx so there was no need to grind higher, it just made that onyx badge seem so worthless to me if thats not the ranking they use.

Overwatch had it better, its why i kept playing to reach top 5. And that was years ago i dunno why games are going backwards

Higher rank opponents, quicker rank up.

Some players took 20 games to get from Diamond 5 to Diamond 6.

It took me 2.

Yeah but my team is never on par with the enemy.

Maybe its because im a solo but no one played objective… id have most kills, most objective time and still lose because some people rather go for K/D

Its funny though as those player moan thr most if you lose. I dunno the hidden mmr just takes away the value of onyx for me, i dont feel its all that amazing to reach. Hate to conpare to overwatch as i dont think that game was amazing but every rank higher i got i felt proud! Could never get past top 5 but thatll be in my memory forever… onyx dont have that for me

You’re running into one of the biggest issues with this system. It basically counts all kills the same across all playlists for your hidden MMR.

Get a ton of kills against some bots… Hidden MMR goes up.
Get a ton of kills against some randoms in BTB… Hidden MMR goes up.
It doesn’t matter. All playlists are connected.

So if you do well in other playlists, your hidden MMR skyrockets to the point where the game thinks you should be playing high Onyx players in the ranked playlist. Try playing your ‘unranked’ matches to get your ranking and it finds opponents based on your hidden MMR only so you will probably get slaughtered every game and then still place you somewhere in Diamond.

Once you are ranked it will factor in your CSR to find matches but you will barely rank up if you’re playing against Diamonds because the system thinks you should be so much better than them.

This is why:

The players that take 20 games to go from Diamond 5 to Diamond 6 likely have a hidden MMR skewed very high due to other game types.

The players that get from Diamond 5 to Diamond 6 in only 2 games likely have a hidden MMR much closer to their CSR or even skewed lower by other game types.

The system probably works well for players that only play ranked and only play by themselves. But because of the way the system is incorporating other playlists and playing with friends, it gets totally messed up.

Because of this system, when my friend and I play together in ranked, every game gives us less than 10% chance to win. That is not fun.

Also, for people like @Darwi who think we should just go play social together… We would play more social if there were more playlists with BR starts. But 343 seems allergic to that. And we prefer not to spend every game fighting over who gets the one BR on the map, if there even is a BR on the map.

The players that take 20 games have MMR very close to their CSR or below it.

Players that take 2 games have much higher MMR than CSR.

You would think that’s how it should work. And that probably is how it works if you only play ranked and your MMR is appropriately high.

But it currently isn’t working that way if your MMR is skewed inappropriately high due to other playlists. Also, good luck trying to do anything in ranked if you play with a friend who isn’t the exact same skill level.
