"I've been playing since [insert trilogy title]"

“, so my opinion is instantly valid.” Is something often heard here on the forums in regards to changes made to Halo in recent years.

What I feel though is that these people who “have been playing since CE” maybe didn’t understand what fundamentals made Halo the way it was, mainly looking at multiplayer.

A video analyzing Halo’s gameplay

I believe a lot of what made Halo, Halo, is absent in Halo 5, and I desperately want to play Halo again. As far as I’m concerned, this game is just called Guardians.

That’s basically what ive been saying the whole time I’ve been on waypoint. And I’ve been playing since CE

I’ve been playing Halo since Halo CE, and I still love it!

I agree. If I want old halo I put it into the box.

Ditto

I’ve been playing since Halo 4. Never played Halo before that. i did grow up gaming starting with original NES, just never Halo. I think sometimes people want the game to take them back to that time when gaming as a whole was different. If Halo 3 was released this fall for the first time, it wouldn’t be the hit is was back then for a variety of reasons. Not knocking the game,I’m just saying halo changed because everything changed. I really think the old Halo’s game mechanics were influenced heavily by the limitations of the developers and the consoles. We expect more now. Mario had to fly, Han Solo had to die, John 117 had to sprint.

I was introduced to halo ce by my older brother when he started going to his friends’ for LAN parties. I fell in love with it, because I never experienced multiplayer like that. The next best thing was from the Nintendo games.

In regards to your post, OP, I think, in my opinion, what made halo, halo, was just the fun we all had with it at one point. I do agree with your video posted that the skill level requirements introduced in later halo games tipped the holy balance of friendly game into competitive game halo had more into the competitive area. I know this point is very vague, but just remember that halo always and always will have that random occurrence that just puts a smile on your face… ha, or trigger your rage.

Hey let’s all abandon modern gaming and go back to the original halo cause it was fun and I felt better about myself!

Halo 3 unfortunately, but I have caught up in the MCC. Halo CE and 2 were amazing. The campaigns were very well done and thought out. And it felt like I was in the story itself. Because of course, we are Master Chief.

You act like Halo 5 is objectively superior because 343 crammed in some “modern” gameplay mechanics, and in general, strayed away from the skill-based arena multiplayer that the Halo which started it all had.

If you haven’t watched the linked video then I see no reason in continuing this discussion.

I was gonna watch the video, saw it was 30 minutes long, decided to play halo 30 minutes instead.

I’ve been playing since Halo: Combat Evolved

The 'i’ve been playing since CE" line has been used to support pretty much every opinion ever, not just pro-halo 5 opinions.

Yes, which is why it has become an invalid argument. I played COD 2, but I don’t go on their forums and tell them to add energy shields.

Honestly it’s just as bad as people saying “your not a true halo fan because [insert reason]!”

First played CE Then halo 2 came out, and it was even better. Then Halo 3 which was the best halo ever created. Didn’t play reach but then this franchise went downhill after that.

Made my night Vader.

Huh, I didn’t know killmachine made videos. Normally I’d agree that 30-minute videos are usually trash (typically some guy re-iterating an uninsightful point or argument I’ve already heard over and over), but 30 minute videos that talk about game design are worth watching.

Gonna have to put off watching it for now but will definitely get into it later.

I will say usually I just ignore most people who say “I’ve been playing since Ce.” Their views, and some of the incorrect facts they state about Ce itself, make me feel like they’re straight up lying. Not that you need to have been playing since Ce to have an opinion on game design, but it’s still annoying regardless.

I’ve actually already largely done that. Modern games suck unless you’re playing niche titles.

While I dont neccesarily disagree with him, I personally feel that 5 comes close to that classic old feel that’s been absent after Halo 3. 5 has it’s own niche in a manner like how 3 had duel-wielding and equipment. While I can understand the points that maps are bigger now to accommodate sprint, I keep finding myself trying to sprint in the older titles.
(Something I’d be less inclined to do if the movement speed was about the same as, say, Doom.) MCC proved to me classic Halo is still classic, but in hindsight they arent without their flaws. Same goes with 5, but that doesnt make it a bad game…it’s terrible story certainly doesnt help, but the overall gameplay still feels pretty solid.

But with future titles, I want to see an evolution rather than revolution.

That video was very insightful and well done. I recommend fans of “modern halo” watch it to understand exactly why fans of the original trilogy are so passionate about it. It had a gameplay that felt very unique and was both challenging and rewarding.
