It’s not so much what they added, it was what they took away.
There was a reason for everything 343 did and a reason for everything Bungie did, but I think Bungie was a little more grounded in reality. The biggest disappointment is the laggy experience with Spartan Ops. Don’t even get me started on internet or Lan Spartan Ops, this was two people, playing a mission on one Xbox.
The Forge experience is bad, worse then Halo 3, and a hell of a lot worse then Reach, Half is that is simply maps, Halo 3 very quickly has expansive maps with large pallets and Forge World is an endless possibility. the best map Halo 4 has for Forge is up for debate, be it Impact with it’s wide expanse, Ravine with its two places to build, or Erosion with it’s built in Grifball court. The problem with those three maps, is that none of them are the big expanses you have in either Halo 3 or Reach, and all of 4’s big maps have giant set pieces in the middle preventing their reuse. This is on top of what seems to be the biggest -Yoink- up of Forge, no UNSC air. Let us fly the Pelican in Campaign, great! give us a reskinned Sabre for the final mission, that was one of the best parts of Reach! But No Hornet, No Falcon, and the only new vehicle is the Mantis, which is quite possibly overpowered, or nerfed depending on who you ask.
Finally, The Elites, the Sangheili, their removal from Multiplayer was a massive mistake, not just for the people who liked it as their avatar, but also from the standpoint that Bungie had just given them an out to keeping them out of normal matchmaking by making them different. With the massive amount of stuff they ripped stright from Reach, they can’t just give people an Elite model to pick for? Oh wait they wanted it to be part of the story, ok, here’s what you say: Transfer officers working for forces loyal to the Arbiter. Bam, please use that for Halo 5, I’ll take my payment in the form of UNSC air in Multiplayer.
Hey guys, let’s remove:
Dual Wielding
True Infection
True Race
Assault
Juggernaut
The most beloved flying vehicle, The Hornet
The biggest update to forge, Forgeworld
Ranks
Forge Features
Fileshare
Elites
Weapon Lowering
Various Weapons
Various Vehicles
Firefight
343I didn’t just piss off one community. They pissed off tons of different groups in this game. Machinima Makers, Forgers, Zombie Slayers, Racers, the list goes on.
Halo’s 1 through 3 added more content to each other. They BUILT on the previous ones.
After 3 though, content just keeps getting removed and removed.
Why…? Removing content doesn’t please anyone. I understand some of it has to be cut for filesize, but removing basic things like gametype options?
I blame the dynamic lightmap recalculation for the removal of Forge world. Having to do the math on something that massive would surely hog the 360’s CPU for a few minutes. I wish we could just calculate it on whim or at file save, instead, because its annoying putting one object in, going out to see how it looks, put another in…
I really miss Firefight, though. Racing, too, and Lone Wolf with nothing but Regicide / Slayer.
The Elite avatar was nice, I was one in Halo 3, but not something I’d miss. At least we all have fair sized head hitboxes now.
I totally agree.
It’s even the little things, like medals, as well. I’m probably reading into it a bit much, but I think the sterility of the medal system, with the removal of things like: hunting season, be the bullet, red menace, slice n’ dice, etc.
Instead they’re generic titles, along with the typical killing spree, frenzy, running riot, etc.
It lacks a sense of fun and that, to me, makes 343i seem like a rather boring bunch.
Even the lack of scoring for Campaign and SpOps takes away from the experience. No scoring in the campaign kills the reason to use skulls, unless you want that achievement or you want a bit of EXP (though I’d rather spend 5 minutes on SpOps than 45 minutes on campaign). The fact that you still get scored points for individual kills, but not an overall makes SpOps seem unfinished.
I wasn’t even that big a fan of Firefight, but similarly, SpOps seems a lot more sterile to Firefight. Firefight’s customisation opened it up to a whole new set of experiences in the same areas. Whereas SpOps has pretty much felt the same for every mission so far.
The removal of static weapon spawns. That’s the biggest.
i agree with a few of these points, however most of them seem like they did what they said, back to basics.
halo was terrible because so many weapons, and several were not on any map or mode.
that is my number one complaint, i want a fuel rod! god, i have since h2… but nope. Reach’s was watered down honestly, this game delivers. Halo 5, hope to god has a sentinel beam in matchmaking.
The more threads like this I read the more I realize how bad of a state this game is currently in. That said, I still love it and will play the hell out of it, but they really need to start listening to people.

Too be honest, I’m more disappointed that the Falcon isn’t here. That was a great vehicle. It was like a aerial Warthog.
Firefight and Forgeworld were added after 3. D:
This is what urks me the most in Halo 4. They removed a TON of awesome sndbox content that made Halo, Halo.
-UNSC air vehicle
-Covenant ground support (Spectre, Revenant)
-Brutes (Jiralhanae)
-Drones (Yanme’e)
-Flood
-Engineers (Huragok)
-Weapons (SMG, Sticky Launcher, Spiker, Falmethrower, Incendiary grenade, Plasma Rifle, etc.)
-Firefight
-Theater FOR ALL MODES
-Playable Elites and their awesome customizable armor
-Custom game options (Grenade regeneration)
-The Jiralhanae vehicles (Prowler, Chopper)
-Elephant in MP
-Less options for armor (Wrist, Utility, Armor Effect)
All I can think of for the moment. There is alot of cool content that could be in Halo 4, but isn’t. Lets hope some of these things return for Halo 5.
I’m sure I could make a list right now of features and content that were either removed or didn’t make the cut of the game, heck we all can. Thats pretty sad.
It is a disappointment to see that so much was removed. Man, you never know what you miss until its gone.
It does seem like everyone, on a broader sense in terms of what people like about Halo, got something taken away from them in some way shape or form.
I know that in Reach, some features and items from Halo 3 didn’t make it in, but it did improve greatly on what was already established. Halo 4 doesn’t do that, or hasn’t done that yet.
It seems like more and more is being removed as the games keep advancing.
This is true. I don’t mind any of the feature 343 added to Halo (Except Flinch… BEGONE FOUL FEATURE!) But I do miss the majority of feature they threw away.
I guess for most of them the best we can do is pray they add them into Halo 5.
> I guess for most of them the best we can do is pray they add them into Halo 5.
Completeley agree.
