It's not really free though, is it?

Any chance this game had of substantially increasing its population was instantly diminished the moment we were told we’d have to pay for DLC to go into certain playlists if we didn’t own it already, and the chances are that if you do have it, you already own the game to begin with!

I’d love to see it thrive again, but the moment new players realize that they will have to fork out some money for map packs and are restricted to only a few playlists if they don’t - it’s over. They won’t bother playing again. I assume most people will get this game simply because it’s free to download and just because “Why not?”, not because they’re super interested in H3 and the Halo franchise in general.

You’ve really shot yourself in the foot with this one, and Halo 3 too, 343/MS. Is it really that hard to just release the full game with all DLC included? Trying to pass something off as free and then expecting people to pay money to get the full multiplayer experience once they’ve downloaded it is a real low blow.

Exactly.

You can’t pass something off as free if the purchasing of DLC is, essentially, required. Microsoft really has no reason to not make it free. The game has been out for more than six years, and all of the multiplayer content is already available with the ODST multiplayer disc.

I was really looking forward to Halo 3’s population getting back to its former glory. This news, coupled with the fact that the playlists won’t/can’t be consolidated, makes me question whether the population rise will still happen.

Microsoft could, AT THE VERY LEAST, make the DLC free while Halo 3 is free.

It will, but it won’t last since you can only play 4 playlists and they are all social ones.

That’s not true, there’s 2 playlists on ranked and 2 playlists on social.

I don’t see a problem with this. The dlc in Halo 3 is well worth it and also pocket change. If new players want to experience all the other game modes they should get the dirt cheap dlc of Halo 3. It’s not a problem, they get the base game and heroic map pack for free.

The things I want to say to 343 are not even allowed here on the forums. Seriously though, you guys want to earn back our trust? You want to make things better? No you don’t. You’re all still lying JUST like you did when you were making Halo 4. You don’t give a darn about Halo, you just care about money. We can all rot for all you guys care.

Thanks 343. Thanks a bunch. You’re just like Microsoft. Greedy, lying little…nevermind. I can’t say what I want to say.

R.I.P. Halo 3

The thing is, we shouldn’t have to pay at all if Microsoft is passing this off as a free game. The least they could do is make the DLC free while Halo 3 is free. Our fear is that having to pay for the full experience will discourage potential players from playing, and thus, Halo 3’s population won’t increase. I really want this game to be revived.

343 doesn’t control the prices.

They did, however, lie to us about consolidating the playlists.

It isn’t surprising in the least bit.

No I’m not upset at Microsoft/343i. How has Halo 3’s server population been going so far?

0 Swat, 0 social. Oh we are paying for the content because of this BTW.

This just confirms that nothing is 100% just because it’s “free”.

Like I said in other threads. I owned ODST (I got all the achievements ffs.) But I traded it in when Halo 3 population dropped and I moved onto Reach permanently. I owned the maps for a long time, but lost my ownership when I traded it in. Seems unfair imo, I should at least be able to download them on the marketplace since I originally owned them. (Like all other DLC.) People like me are even more frustrated by this news.

Edit: By the way, Rainbow Six Vegas was just released free a while back. It’s DLC was free. (The two map packs it released.)

Just disappointed. Something so simple but once again you guys 343’d it up. It’s the little things 343 when are you going to get that.

Oh boo hoo. Because they aren’t removing DLC required playlists or making it all free for cheapskates that means 343 are liars, cheats and awful people?

No. It does not. The DLC is on SALE. One of the map packs is 1.99 for crying out loud. I try so hard to be a positive member on these forums but when I see such tripe like this it infuriates me.

I don’t care how old the game is, if you want to play a DLC required playlist either buy the DLC or don’t play the game. That’s it. I’ll be -Yoink!- if they’re going to have a repeat performance of Halo: Reach and Halo 4 because you or anyone else out there are too cheap to fork over TWO DOLLARS.

If this is truly the case and this poorly written excuse for a post is actually real than I’m incredibly proud of not having to come across anyone like you in the next few days.

Am I the only one who owns both H3 and ODST, and is glad that he has no intention of trading in either?
DLC discounted price, but it was funny how no one complained about how when AC II was free, both Revelations and Brotherhood, along with sequence 12 and sequence 13, were all sold at a discount price. So why are people complaining? I see many people who are so ecstatic that H3 was going to be free, but the minute someone gets a sniff that nothing else related to the game is going free, they are gone.

I feel that people are still angry about how Halo 4 came out in terms of the game and developer service afterwards. It wasn’t even that bad.

I honestly think that people are just waiting for ANYTHING to complain about.

Of course people are still angry about Halo 4. Have you played that game? It is NOTHING like the original trilogy, so naturally Halo fans are extremely disappointed.

I have played it and I’m aware of the issues. I’m just saying that just because they didn’t like that game doesn’t give them the right to whine about EVERYTHING.

The DLC not being free with the game doesn’t surprise me, in fact I fully expected it. I’m also glad they’ve done it like that.

Halo 4 wasn’t what the community expected? Ooh I know, lets go and complain about EVERY TINY THING that 343 may not have control over.

The only reason you owned the maps was through the ODST Mythic Disc that came bundled free with the Halo 3 ODST game. You didn’t pay to download the maps before, so why should you be allowed to download them for free now?

Its your problem you traded the games in, not Microsoft’s, 343’s or anybody elses. You received no redemption/DLC code for the maps therefore you have no rights what so ever to get the maps for free. The game is being released digitally in the exactly the same capacity as a physical copy and every game mode (campaign, Forge, matchmaking and theater) available to play. Therefore Microsoft has every right to advertise this as a free game, since it is in its original final stage on its original release.

And how can DLC with tied achievements be free? Yes, Rainbox Six Vegas’ DLC was free, but it has no achievements tied to it. And like I have said in numerous other threads on this forum, Microsoft has a strict policy where DLC content with tied achievements CANNOT be free. Since Rainbow Six Vegas’ DLC gave no achievements, it can be made free (and was done so before the policy came into effect).

It amazes me how many people come to a 343 forum to rant and complain about things 343 have absolutely no control over. You want to complain? Maybe you should all take it up with the XBL Marketplace team. You know, the people who actually make all the decisions about ANYTHING Marketplace related.

Asking people to pay for DLC to fully play the Matchmaking of a 6-year-old game is disgraceful, especially when it’s being advertised as free.

Whether it’s “on sale” or not is irrelevant. New players will still have to pay money to be able to enjoy the complete multiplayer experience.

Making people pay for DLC if they bought the game is fair, but when it’s supposed to be free? That doesn’t sit well with me, unfortunately. You may be prepared to forgive and be OK with everything 343/MS does, but I’m not.

How is it not free? Like I’ve said in other threads, all the game modes are playable and Microsoft are doing nothing wrong since they have never advertised that all the DLC would be free. All the DLC does is allow a premium use of the online services. Its like saying you joined Amazon for free, but deserve to get their premium Amazon Prime next day delivery service for free too, simply because you joined.

The game is being release exactly as it would be if you went to a store and bought it. If you bought the game from the store the DLC wouldn’t be free, so why should it be any different when you aren’t paying it? DLC packages for any games are simply ADD ONS. They are not part of the original factory shipped product, and so are classed differently and accordingly. If the Games for Gold service stated that any DLC related to a featured game would automatically become free, you would have a valid argument. But the fact is it doesn’t, therefore Microsoft have every right to continue charging for ADDITIONAL content if they choose.

Also I’m guessing you’re one of the people who dont know about Microsoft policy on DLC and achievements. Its a strict policy that DLC with achievements tied to it cannot be made free. Its been around for a few years, and hasn’t been changed since it was implemented.

Maybe you should take a good long look at the description of the Games for Gold promotion. It even says it in the title, GAMES for Gold.

If you HONESTLY expected Microsoft to release the game with free DLC then it’s your own problem. I’m not “ok” with anything because there’s nothing to be upset or remotely indifferent about. We knew Halo 3 was going to be free, they said nothing about the DLC.

When it was advertised that Halo 3 would be coming with this promotion I fully expected to have the game and the game alone, did they say the DLC was coming with this? Nope.

At this point you have two options, you can either enjoy the free game and play things like Customs, Forge, Campaign and ‘limited’ Matchmaking or you could pay less than 20 dollars for those maps you don’t have. If you don’t want to do that then don’t play.

Simple.
