It has been 13 years.

It has been 13 years since Halo fans have gotten to be inside the Master Chief’s head. John-117 is arguably the main character of the entire series, and yet everything we know about how he thinks ad who he really is comes from just three books, the last of which was published in 2003, and was set before Halo 2. We desperately need to catch up with John. We need to know how he has changed after all he has been through and how he feels about all of it. We are long overdue for a book starring the Master Chief. I think showing us how Blue Team and Osiris got to Sanghelios from Genesis would work great for a story, even if it was just a short novella, but I’d certainly also take novels based around the events of Halo 2, Halo 3, etc (I really enjoyed The Flood, though I know my opinion is not one most share).

There is Halo Escalation, “The next 72 hours” saga

Good point. I totally forgot that we did get some internal dialogue from him there.

Last 72hrs was disappointing to say the least.

I think with him being the main character, its better left mostly to the games. Halo’s tricky enough at the moment for people to grasp without needing books (or requiring massive dumbing down in game it seems), putting Chief into that mess is not a good idea. Chief only really showed ‘character’ beyond being a space marine in the Flood which played sort of fast and loose with canon.

FoR was backstory. Flood was the novelization of a game we already had, and the events of First Strike were mostly completely ignored by h2 other than Chief and Johnson getting back.

Halo 4 has done probably the most to characterize the Chief in the games. First Strike characterizes him a ton as well, not to mention Fred and Linda. While 5 kinda forgot about his character, we know a good bit about John 117.

I think I’d be satisfied with just seeing his face atleast once

The only author I’d want writing from the Chief’s perspective is Nylund. He did a great job of giving the Master Chief a sense of character without contradicting the stoic persona he’s always displayed outwardly. The best in-game characterisation came in Halo 4, and it saddens me that the lead writer left to work on Mass Effect, and is now with Bungie.

I agree with you. Staten and Bear could do a great job, too.
