Isn't Playing Against Onyx & Champ A Good Thing?

I get it. I really do. Nobody likes to be mopped up around Bottom-Mid of Truth by a team of Onyx or Champs (not that you should be there in the first place). But is it not a good thing that you are being matched with them? I’m not an expert in Halo Matchmaking, but I have read the FAQ and many of the posts. I think they do a really good job at explaining it. If others would take the time to read it, I believe it would clarify many things.

You are matched with people who have the same MMR (or around the same). When I have to play against these players I sort of enjoy it. Not only does it allow me to learn to play better, but it tells me that I’m also playing better in general to be matched with higher ranks. I feel like it is a good thing. I think people are missing the point when it comes to what they perceive as “unfair” matches. I suppose I have two points to take away from this post.

1. You are matched based off MMR (hidden rank) and not CSR (visible rank). So, ranking against much better players just means that you similar in MMR and has nothing to do with the CSR you see in the game. Maybe you are solo queuing and lose a lot. Your MMR is still going to be higher because the game sees you are a better player in general, you are just on lousy teams.

If you bomb every game and are ranked in Gold, that just means based off wins and losses that you are Gold, but you are capable at playing at a higher level. That is why sometimes you play an Onyx that is trash, and sometimes you get it handed to you by a Gold. IF YOU ONLY EVER PLAY AT YOUR CSR, YOU WILL NEVER RANK UP.

“Well, why can’t they just show MMR and not CSR?” Well, that is because MMR is what you SHOULD BE DOING, not what YOU ARE DOING. Who wants a rank that they don’t deserve? Getting a rank that you don’t deserve is precisely what leads to mismatched matchmaking. On the flipside, to match properly, the matchmaker has to be able to guess the outcome of the game.Which, surprise surprise, is based off MMR.

2. Matching with higher tiered players should be a good thing (in my opinion). It shows you are playing at the same level as them, but also you can’t rank up without them. IF YOU ONLY EVER PLAY AT YOUR CSR, YOU WILL NEVER RANK UP.

If you smile a little on the inside when you match with an Onyx or Champ please message me and lets play together. If you lose and are the type of person to say “Oh well, they had an Onyx” then please don’t message me because that is a terrible attitude and it’s probably the reason you are Bronze and/or complaining in the forums.

I mean no offense to anyone by any of this. This is just my opinion on ranks and matchmaking and it is the way I CHOOSE to see and play the game. Thanks.

I agree with most of your points – playing with people better than you is generally going to help you improve, as long as the skill gap isn’t too extreme.

However, the points below aren’t quite correct:

Your placements are based on MMR, win/loss doesn’t matter (MMR - 100 points with a cap of Diamond 3). You can also continue to play people at/near your CSR (or lower!) and increase rank if you play better than expected.

You’re right. I didn’t say it correctly. I was talking about playing regular games and are ranked Gold, not necessarily placement matches. But I agree. Thanks for the input!

As long as you aren’t playing against Smurfs

I can attest to this. When they had BTB ranked (a huge mistake), the game I reached champ I was playing against golds and plats…I just exceeded the KPM it predicted.

My feeling on SBMM is that we can widen it, but do not eliminate it all together. It’s nice to get a variety of skill levels in your game, but bronze rank day 1 players should not he matched with onyx players. With that level of disparity it can actually be hard to even learn how to play the game.

I recently booted up H5 for the first time in awhile. Now mind you, I’m casual, and not good at the game. But the lobby I was placed in for my first match… dear lord… (I’m assuming my MMR was reset or something?) Cause I went 18-0 and carried my whole team, and I only used precision weapons, no power weapons. That experience was as unfair for them as it was me. I never realized just how wide the skill gap was until that game. My opponents were using AR’s at range, instead of their pistols, that’s the kind of skill disparity we’re talking about here. Needless to say, my second match wasn’t that easy lol. But to place these kinds of players with sweatlords wont benefit anyone imo.

What about latency playing from regions outside the USA is a huge issue I may from Australia and when you matching champs and your a low diamond on a 350+ ping it doesn’t make you a better player your literally cannon fodder as you die in two shots and can’t compete it just ruins it for everyone involved as you can barely kill anyone and just get melted in half the time
