So I just started playing Halo 5 the other week and one my friends was talking about how there was free unlockable armor once upon a time. I was wondering if any of the armor is still unlockable. If you can tell me if there is/isn’t that would be very helpful.
I honestly don’t remember if there’s any “free” armor specifically.
All I know is that you can unlock armor from req packs. Remember, go for the silver packs first!

All armor is free to unlock one way or another. The only pay only armor is the classic helmets and HCS stuff. The rest is either in req packs you can get buy grinding out points, OR there are some you can unlock via achievements and stuff but most of them are in req packs. Then there is Achilles which is unlocked after your Spartan company completes the kill commendations.
Pretty sure right now Achilles, Olive, and Timmy are the only helmets not available in regular packs. Helioskrill can be obtained by completing all campaigns in MCC on Legendary and I think you can get Mark VI scarred for completing Cairo Station in MCC. However, both of those can be unlocked via REQ packs. Rest are only available through regular REQ packs and the Reach helmets are exclusive to the Classic Helmet Pack which is always available in the Xbox store for real money and is sometimes available for purchase via req points.

Don’t forget Challenger, that’s no longer available.
The only stuff behind a pay wall is the voices of war a customization that let’s you change the announcers voice to either Buck, a grunt or exuberant Witness, all the HCS stuff, which besides the teams and HSC weapon skins has two armor sets one of which is no longer available… That is it I am pretty sure. Now the classic Helmet pack which is just helmets is available for purchase but on very rare occasion it will be available for req points. Everything else armor wise is free one way or another.
You can get armor from completing the campaign on heroic, and legendary.
